24.01.2022 Good to read this positive report of students benefitting from peer tutoring. I can say from wonderful experience that setting up peer tutoring can be very effective for developing both Literacy and Numeracy skills in students at risk of failure. However, it wasn’t just as simple as taking volunteers... For the peer tutoring to be effective the older students needed training in essential effective strategies of teaching! Along with ongoing supervision and support by traine...d teachers... But the rewards for all the time and effort were absolutely worth it. The older students developed great life skills that they would be able to use if they ever became parents themselves down the track! Of course, they loved the adoration they received from the younger students too! I even had volunteer peer tutors who had struggled themselves in their early years. It was such a boost to their ego - to finally be the helper instead of always the helped! Of course the students (and even their parents and teachers) on the receiving end of all the help were ever so grateful to see their skills in reading and number sense improve! Anyone wanting to learn some dos and don’ts of setting up Literacy and Numeracy peer tutoring programs reach out. Happy to share some ideas. #learningsupport

22.01.2022 "Every cloud has a silver lining". Lynz Education has gone 'virtual'! Being 'grounded' this year has meant we have had to consider how to find a 'new normal'...... All the PD we used to deliver face to face is now available 'virtually'... And surprisingly there are actually lots of positives to offering PD this way. PD sessions are now delivered after school via Zoom for 5 x 1 hr sessions. (That's a positive a school bursars would love!) But the biggest benefit is the opportunity for teachers to learn an activity and then give it a go in their classrooms. Then at the beginning of the next session teachers get to share how it worked and everyone can discuss how it could be modified to meet even more students' needs... We get so excited to hear that the students have enjoyed the changes their teachers have made to their numeracy teaching! And we are even going to do classroom observations remotely this year! Teachers will be uploading their teaching videos for feedback. They think that's good too... it's less daunting. It gives teachers control over what lesson is observed! (If they have a bad day or a student does... well that lesson won't get observed!) But they can still have the benefit of receiving feedback on what's working well and what could be tweaked...
