21.01.2022 Collaborations are literally next door in our precinct... . Kath Egan @katheganartist has written a story about her new work in progress and how she, together with @two_seas_creative chose the perfect frame... Thank you Kathy for sharing your ideas! ... . I’m currently making work for a show @keith_murwillumbah. Collaborating with the other studio artists is one of the many things I really love about having a studio here at M|Arts. Our conversations often find their way into the work we are making. A clear example of this is the thrill of walking into @twoseascreative. I presented this unfinished work with a frame I had found and inquired about turning it into a box to house these knives and spoons. After seeing the wall of beautiful frames to choose from it soon became clear to me that this work could be elevated to a whole new level. With the help of Corinne and Cameron’s expertise I managed to narrow it down. I have included my top 3 choices. ~Kath Egan . . . #kathegan #katheganart #collaborationsinmartsprecinct #loveworkingwithartists #beautifulhandscreating #artistsworkingwithartists #martsprecinct #ideas #murwillumbahpictureframing #artistatwork #uniquesculpture #upcomingexhibitionatkeith See more

21.01.2022 ‘ART KNOWS NO BORDERS’ Join us for the last in the series of ‘In Conversations’ at M|Arts Long Gallery this Saturday November 21, 11am AEDST with Lorraine Pilgrim Gallery @lorrainepilgrimgallery and Deb Mostert @debmostertartist. Deb Mostert’s 30-year practice ranges across drawing, painting and sculpture with an ongoing interest in still life, thanks in part to her Dutch heritage. In recent years, and through weekly visits to the Qld Museum, she has been looking at our rel...ationship with the natural world and seeing wonder, gratitude, and stewardship as the way forward rather than our tendencies towards objectification and exploitation. Mostert has found her interests in objects, collections, museums and natural history all colliding to bring about salient conversations we need to have as we seek for the flourishing of all. Please be sure to book as numbers are limited due to restrictions. Bookings: Lorraine Pilgrim - 0418 767 495 M|Arts Precinct - 0455 320 920 See you soon. 18.01.2022 New exhibition ‘On Stillness’ is now showing in the Gallery DownTown upstairs within M|Arts Precinct. This exhibition features artworks from the Tweed Regional Gallery collection that embody the idea of stillness. Born out of the stillness imposed by the COVID-19 lockdown, the exhibition was first presented as an evolving online exhibition, initiated by the National Art School and Newcastle Art Gallery with contributions from the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art C...entre, New England Regional Art Museum, Orange Regional Gallery, Wollongong Regional Gallery and Museum of Art and Culture Lake Macquarie. Each gallery selected works from their collection that explored stillness in different ways through time, across generations, through portraiture, still life, landscape and more. The result was an eclectic collection of works unified by a concept that was being experienced, in some way, across the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The online exhibition encouraged each contributing gallery to examine their collection from a new perspective. This real life version invites audiences to consider the concept of stillness both in relation to these artworks and to their own lived experiences. Open Mon - Fri, 10am - 3pm & Sat, 10am - 2pm. Pictured artwork - Image one, 1st from left: Hui Hai Xie, Johnathan Aatty, 1996, oil mixed synthetic polymer paint on canvas, 165 x 181.5cm. 14.01.2022 ‘ART KNOWS NO BORDERS’ Lorraine Pilgrim Gallery @lorrainepilgrimgallery presents the November series of ‘In Conversation with the Artist’ at the M|Arts Precinct Long Gallery. You are invited to join us for this inspiring conversation, tomorrow, Friday November 6 at 11am (AEDST) with Donna Malone. ... For the last 25 years Donna Malone @_donnamalone has concentrated on Drawing as her major activity. Her Drawings are alive, impulsive, and instinctual. She primarily draws from life both in Nature and life drawing. She works in close collaboration with her subject and materials. Since a Venice residency in 2015 she has added the physical manipulating and layering of drawn and marked papers (found and ephemeral) as another of her primary concerns. She will ‘do’, ‘undo’ and ‘redo’ these collages until she finds the ‘sweet spot’, sometimes this mission can take many months, even years to resolve. I believe the qualities of Time, Attention and Trust are the true Essence of my Drawing and Collage practise - Donna Malone. BOOKINGS ESSENTIAL. Please be sure to book as numbers are limited due to covid restrictions. 12.01.2022 It’s been an eventful few days with Cam Scale’s new street art painting outside M|Arts Precinct. The painting is a dramatic statement about the plight of whistle blowers around the world. We received a lot of great feedback, but also concerns about one interpretation given to the painting which wasn’t intended and which we felt strongly wasn’t acceptable. An immediate decision was made with the artist to paint over one part of the artwork, which will now evolve into something else. Watch this space.

09.01.2022 #Repost @thefield.mbah with @make_repost Sneak peek of elements of Fire & Ice exhibition by Heather Matthew @heathermatthewcom, now open. Heather writes in her statement:... "Fire and Ice are two words often used to describe Iceland as a place of extreme contrasts, active volcanos and ice coated glaciers. In October 2019 I undertook a one month artist residency in Iceland to create art about the poetics of water as sea, river, ice and rain. One week before I arrived in the country, a funeral was held for the OK glacier which had lost its ‘glacier’ status due to the effects of climate change. I saw first hand the effects of glacial melt in the south of Iceland and began making work about the lava fields, icebergs ‘calving’ from glaciers and the rising sea. I embedded these elements into handmade paper through immersion, mark-making and simple printmaking techniques. I experimented with paper pulp made from Icelandic seaweed mixed with reactivated dried paper pulp I had brought with me. This pulp was made from cotton sheets donated to families affected by the 2019 floods in Townsville and beach grass washed up in Pottsville from the extreme high seas and beach erosion. I started making paper at the Nes residency in Skagaströnd as a placemaking activity, activating the pulp with melted snow, adding seaweed and and found fishing nets and rope offcuts. I created glacial shapes resembling tectonic plates adrift in the sea, broken apart but still connected by water. I also took field recordings and videos of the surrounding environment and crushed paper into flowers, dying them with watery ink. On my return to Australia, the east coast of New South Wales and Queensland was ablaze with bushfires from the drought. Soot and burnt gum leaves washed up on the beach so I collected them and started embedding them into paper pulp I had made from more of my flood damaged papers from 2017. These two extremes Fire and Ice are my new body of work about climate change. This work integrates my experiences of flood, glacial melt and bushfires as paper offerings to contribute to the discussions about climate change which must take place."
