13.01.2022 The 7th of September 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of the Queensland Government's official recognition of Australian South Sea Islanders as a distinct cultura...l group, 157 years after the first ancestors arrived in Queensland. Over 60,000 people (predominantly men) came from some 80 Pacific Islands, primarily Vanuatu, New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands, and the majority were kidnapped, ‘blackbirded’ or deceived into coming. While some ancestors of Australian South Sea Islanders may have left their homelands by choice, they were more often than not subjected to the same discrimination and harsh treatment as those that were deceived or taken by force. Despite the hardship and discrimination faced by the community, Australian South Sea Islanders have contributed significantly to the social, cultural and economic development of Queensland. Australian South Sea Islanders provided labour to help build local economies and key industries. They contributed to the development of farming and grazing, as well as the maritime industry, pearling, mining, the railways, domestic services and childcare. They have also served the nation as members of the defence force in times of peace and war. The Queensland Government is committed to ensuring that present and future generations of Australian South Sea Islanders have equality of opportunity to participate in and contribute to the economic, social, political and cultural life of the state. To honour this anniversary and the ASSI community across the state, key landmarks such as Queensland Parliament and the Kurilpa Bridge will be lit up in the colours of the ASSI flag this week. 07.01.2022 Deputy Premier Steven Miles says it's "a bit mysterious" that waste water testing in North Rockhampton has returned a positive result. There are currently zero ...confirmed active cases in central Queensland. Mr Miles says the Covid-19 fever clinic located at CQUniversity Australia will open for extended hours for the coming days as a means to get to the bottom of the positive result. 02.01.2022 The water in the fountain at the Civic Centre Mackay, is coloured blue this week, representing the water between here and the island homes the original South Sea people left behind, the water they travelled on when they were bought here to Qld. Acknowledging 20 years since State Recognition of the South Sea Islander people as a separate ethnic group.
