22.01.2022 Typical Cord Knot The following diagram should help to tie the belt cord (sageo) properly, so as not to come loose from the scabbard (saya)

20.01.2022 A hakama is the skirt-like pants worn by many martial arts practitioners (e.g., Iaido, Kendo). Originally, the hakama was worn to protect a samurai horseman's legs from tree branches etc. In Japan leather was very hard to get, so heavy cloth was used instead. Over the years, samurai gradually made the transition from mounted to foot soldiers, but they continued to wear the hakama as it set them apart, making them easily identifiable. Meaning of the Folds The hakama has 7 fold...s in it (5 in the front, 2 in the back). The pleats are symbolic and are supposed to represent the virtues considered essential by the samurai. Many martial artists continue this tradition, but different sources give different meaning to these pleats. Here is one version: Yuki - courage, valor, bravery Jin - humanity, charity, benevolence Gi - justice, righteousness, integrity Rei - etiquette, courtesy, civility (obedience) Makoto - sincerity, honesty, reality Chugi - loyalty, fidelity, devotion Meiyo - honor, dignity, prestige

20.01.2022 Great movies and to have a new series sounds great.

20.01.2022 Small class tonight

19.01.2022 In Iaido each kata should take somewhat less then one minute, but not much less. To do a test or competition from bow in, 5 kata and bow out, you get 6 minutes. Most people think that iai is about "quick draw". In fact it is about moving in such a way that the opponent can't get at you, it doesn't matter how fast or slow you move. Beginners move fast, seniors get slower. Kim A Taylor

19.01.2022 "There is more art in a single bow, simply and sincerely done, than in the most flawlessly executed technique." - Tanomo Saigo

17.01.2022 Kutsuki Mototsuna, one of the Heroes of Sekigahara died on this day, October 12, 1632. Commander and daimyo Kutsuki Mototsuna was born in his namesake Kitsukida...ni Castle in Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture) in 1549. Mototsuna lost his father to war when he was two, and from then on was head of his clan. Mototsuna served the Ashikaga Shogunate at first, and from the age of 21 assisted Oda Nobunaga in an attack on his neighboring Asakura clan. Like many of his contemporaries, Kutsuki joined the Toyotomi forces on the death of Nobunaga in 1582. In 1600, he was allied initially with Otani Yoshitsugu’s forces, but during the course of the battle, waited for the word from Kobayawa Hideaki as to when to enter. When Kutsuki finally did join the fight alongside the Kobayakawa, Wakisaka, Ogawa and Akaza clans, he was fighting for the Eastern forces under Tokugawa colors, and attacked the Otani, their original allies, first. His family was spared and he retained his lands after the great battle for his services to Ieyasu. He died aged 83 on October 12, 1632. With 9 days until the anniversary of the Battle of Sekigahara, find out all the details on those involved and various movements and episodes in the non-fiction book, The Battle of Sekigahara, The Greatest Samurai Battle in History! 232 pages, in full color, over 70 color photos, 8 color maps and 10 diagrams! available now. 17.01.2022 "As soon as the sword leaves the sheathe, the battle is lost." -Samurai saying. Lots of deep implications in this saying. Remember the katana was also a Samurai's Soul. A soul unsheathed is not at rest. A sword-soul unsheathed is cutting, judging and creating dualistic thought and an unbalanced life. Zazen is the physical embodiment of Swords (the soul) sheathed and at rest, but ready and awake for action if needed.

14.01.2022 Decorative Cord Knot There are a number of ways to tie your belt cord (sageo) for decorative display on a stand. This is just one possible arrangement. Using an enameled chopstick (hashi) was helpful to poke the cord into small spaces and to hold the loops. In step seven, tuck in the trailing ends of the cord. Prefer not to see cord ends at all, so hide them under the other layers. Even if you do not hide the ends, it is considered crude to allow the ends to dangle too far.
