21.01.2022 AUSTRALIA POST CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF ROTARY On 6th April Australia Post issued a commemorative $1.10 postage stamp that recognised Rotary’s centenary along with a first day cover. And if you have more than $1.10 spare you could spend $105 to purchase a $5 silver coin commemorating our centenary.... The statement covering the release indicates that Rotary has two significant current projects. The End Trachoma project aims for a trachoma-free Australia. The second project aims to Give Every Child a Future by providing life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific to ensure that generations of children and women are protected against cervical cancer, rotavirus and pneumococcal disease.

21.01.2022 Rotary and the Gates Foundation extend funding match for polio eradication By Rotary International Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced on 22 January that their long-term fundraising partnership, which generates up to $150 million annually for polio eradication, will continue. Under the agreement, Rotary is committed to raising $50 million a year over the next three years, and each dollar will be matched with an additional two dollars by the Gates Foundati...on. In a video address at the 2020 Rotary International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA, Bill Gates told incoming district governors that the partnership with Rotary needs to continue. The Gates Foundation’s longstanding partnership with Rotary has been vital to fighting polio, Gates said. That’s why we’re extending our funding match, so every dollar that Rotary raises is met with two more. He added, I believe that together, we can make eradication a reality. The funding will support polio eradication efforts such as disease surveillance, technical assistance, and operational support for immunization activities. The partnership between Rotary and the Gates Foundation has yielded $2 billion, and Rotarians have given countless volunteer hours to fight polio since Rotary started its PolioPlus program in 1985.

15.01.2022 Vale Bob Ford Bob Ford was a much-valued member of Mackay West Rotary Club from 1977 to 1999, 22 years of Rotary service. Bob succumbed to Motor-neurone Disease last Saturday night after a relatively short, painful fight. He was 79 last birthday. Bob was a family man, a worker, a quiet achiever who ran a successful Panel Shop. On his retirement, some years ago, Bob and Lurline moved to Seaforth. ... In his spare time, Bob was the driving force behind the Volunteer Marine Rescue service. All boaties in the know, were aware that if you were in difficulty, Bob would have you rescued before the Police or Canberra came on the scene and turned your problem into a circus event. Bob will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

14.01.2022 Think of your friends, coworkers and family members who have a heart for service and would enjoy the fellowship, friendship and service opportunities that Rotary offers. Invite them to a meeting. Remember that our virtual gatherings may be a great way for people to join who may not be in a position to leave work for an in-person meeting.

13.01.2022 Dinner at President Michael’s When a horde of hungry Rotarians descend on your quiet Habana abode; when all arrangements have proved satisfactory; when even the weather has co-operated, and when everyone has enjoyed a tasty, well-presented roast dinner, then I guess it’s time for our host, President Michael, to relax a bit with a drink with some bite to it! The high chatter noise level during the meal confirmed that a great deal of Rotary Fellowship was taking place. Our thanks to all those who were involved in the preparations for the evening.

12.01.2022 There are some people who seem, at first meeting, to be just ordinary run-of-the-mill people working their way through life like most of us. Then they start to talk to you and casually mention all the things they do so that you gradually realise that they are a bit above run-of-the-mill. Amanda Wright, our guest speaker last week, is one of those people. We were impressed when chairman David Dunkley told us she won gold medals in field athletics but was also deeply ...involved in the local cycling community. After that she proceeded to tell us that she thought Mackay and the Whitsundays should have a weekly community publication following the retreat of the Daily Mercury into the shadow world of the internet. But then you realise that she has brought that publication to life in a free, glossy, top quality format in a very short time. Amanda, we congratulate you and wish you well in this endeavour. 10.01.2022 Our History through Projects, Rotary Alarms Assisting aged citizens to live safely in their own homes was a major project for 17 years, from 1979 to 1996. Club members manufactured and installed alarms in the homes of our aged community.... People requiring assistance could flick the switch and the siren at the front door would attract attention. It all worked very well then. Now however approvals to manufacture, Council approvals, government red & green tape, insurance ramifications etc would make such a project un workable. Modern technology also would render the alarms obsolete. The photo of the Rotary Alarm factory shows Laurie Corcoran, Mick O’Riordan and Bob Bennett servicing Alarms under the watchful guidance of Club Electrician, Frank Hurley.
