24.01.2022 Once you carry your own water you will learn the value of every drop The situation of starvation in Southern Madagascar is devastating and we all trying to do... our part to make a difference... Humanitarian help is doing their thing, nutritional rehabilitation centers have been installed in a few different communities where all the population is supposed to access their food distribution. Not that simple!! Some villages are so far from these centers. With a temperature reaching up to 40degree, they will need to walk up to 4 hours, maybe longer, to reach for help. The people are too weak. In the last couple of months, we are reaching these villages far from getting any help because of their isolation... The gravity of this famine will go for a long time! Following 5 years of drought, all meager reserves have been eaten, the last chickens or kitchen utensils have been sold in the market and the lean season, which will last until April, has only just begun. To feed themselves, families have to be content with pieces of cacti, tamarinds, or wild roots that have to be cooked for a long time to remove the bitter taste. Finding water means walking for miles at dawn every day on an empty stomach. Today, over 1.5 million people are in need of assistance, apparently, 3 times more than WFP anticipated in July. From the last update this month, the number of children at risk of being in a state of acute malnutrition by the end of the year was estimated at over 120,000. They need international assistance! For a long time, in this semi-arid region, hunger is no longer an emergency but a chronic disease that recurs every year. There is the climate. But there is also the abandonment of the State, health infrastructure without means, and development promises that have never been kept. Madagascar is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. There is talk of putting on track a major action plan that would, for good, tear the South from its dire fate... My friend Talike has been on site for couple of days now to visit her family and see the reality of these villagers along that region. She took the time to talk with them, asking about their daily life. In these pictures, you can see a fruit, usually, it is for making juice and not too good for a weak stomach.... It is a tropical fruit, mostly grows up in dry areas. A Tamarind tree They dry it and use it as a base instead of normal food. Breakfast-lunch and dinner. 18.01.2022 So it's been over 10 months since the food crisis has been announced by WFP! - Despite the Government in full swing to minimize Famine and make it seem like th...e problem is being solved,,, wherever we go, Talike and Team, we only encounter misery and hungry people in villages and communes we distribute help to. I have been able to raise a total of $10,638.78 to this day I have no word to express the extent of my gratitude, this is so wonderful and we have saved many lives and brought relief to thousands..., WE ARE BEYOND THANKFUL It has been raining last week, but this water is insufficient to meet the immediate emergency. Imagine, the population has been waiting for the rain for two years. Cultivating is impossible and the tanks offered during the last drought have been dry for a long time. The seeds that had been saved for planting were consumed. Food stocks are empty. The famine is still there and will be for a while!! We are struggling to get more funds to continue and bring relief to many more villages still waiting for help... Talike and our small team continue to work tirelessly. - As I mentioned in my previous update The feeding days in the market area in Tulear have come to an end because of various ongoing issues there. We managed to provide 57 sessions in total! That is over 4,000 meals, thanks to YOU! So we then decided to try to buy and distribute dry goods and fruit directly to families but that was very difficult to manage, was not a good situation and people were very forceful! It just shows the desperation. It was not ideal so we looked for other solutions. Through a friend, we have managed a permanent solution which will be cooked food again, available Monday to Friday for approximately 50 children per day. We are so happy. The last few days have been spent planning and buying and preparing everything necessary to start next week. All this has been quite stressful for Caro and Emma organizing it but we will send more details and photos as soon as everything is confirmed.
