24.01.2022 As we all look to filling up the calendar for another year don’t forget to add Saturday, July 10th. For the 2021 Bluewater Fling. A great celebration of everything Pipes, Drums & Scottish on the banks of the beautiful Bluewater Pioneer River. All totally free to enjoy.

22.01.2022 GOALS!!! WOW!!! Look at those tenor drummers go!!!

21.01.2022 Some Sunday afternoon marching practice, in preparation for next weekend’s ANZAC day services across the district! It will be wonderful to be back to normal for ANZAC Day this year!

19.01.2022 Vale Robert Henry Sturgeon (Bob) 29/12/1933 - 15/11/2020. It was with great sadness the Mackay and District Pipe Band gathered to play last Friday. As we farewelled Life Member Bob Sturgeon ... Bass drummer for the Mackay and District Pipe Band Bob was awarded Life Membership of the band for his service of over 50 years. He first joined the band in 1948 and retired in 2003. He competed with the band numerous times mainly in North Queensland and Brisbane. He was affectionately called the Brolga as he had a feel for the music and would bounce up and down whilst playing, something the judges did not seem to like, however looking at todays bass drummers he was a man ahead of his time, as bass drummers seem to express themselves a lot more. The band would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and we are thinking of them at this time of great sadness.

17.01.2022 Anzac day is always a big day for the band. We cover a fair bit of ground by bus and by foot, performing as a full band and at times as a mini band or solo. For parade times please refer to Mackay Council website...#anzacday, #mackayanddistrictpipeband,#mackaypride

17.01.2022 Meet Mackay and District Pipe Band’s newest member! He would make a pretty cute drummer boy or little piper, right? In all seriousness, congratulations to band member Liz and her family on the birth of their little boy! Meet little Edgar, born early Friday morning weighing 8lbs 3oz and 52cm long. Teddy apologises for not being able to make practise today but promises to start working on his fingering exercises soon.

16.01.2022 Look at our wonderful gaggle of geese Some of our up and coming players have graduated from chanters to geese, and are joining in with the band for a couple of tunes! So much fun learning together!

16.01.2022 Some of our pipers are also dance parents to highland dancers! And these are the shenanigans that happen in the dancing carpark You’ve got to fit in practice however you can make it work, right?

15.01.2022 Joke of the Day (just don't expect one every day)

15.01.2022 Thursday night practice is back Right here, right now. A touch of cold weather and a whole bunch of new reeds - forgive us Everyone gets a go at solos here too, whether they’re beginners or advanced - thanks Cameron for being our Highland Cathedral superstar!

14.01.2022 The stirring sounds of the pipes and drums marching across the Pioneer River were missing today. Such fond memories of last year's Mackay Scottish Bluewater Fling. Please tag your friends if you are looking forward to next year's Fling on Saturday 10 July 2021.

14.01.2022 What's your favourite tune to hear on the pipes and drums?

14.01.2022 Finally, an easy way to work out social distancing requirements.

14.01.2022 It's been such a shame to miss out on our workshops, camp and various performances in 2020, but it's also been an opportunity to use technology to our advantage and learn from people we may not have otherwise had the opportunity to learn from. Our tenors drummers were generously given the time and expertise of Joanna from The Big Rab Show - from the other side of the world!!! - and learnt some cool new tricks! Thank you so much, Joanna!

14.01.2022 Remembering our friends from the Townsville Scottish Community on this Together in Spirit Tartan Day 2020. From the Mackay & District Pipe Band.

12.01.2022 Our thoughts are with our friends in Edinburgh as the pipes and drums are silent this year. Here is to looking forward to a better 2021.

11.01.2022 Now this was FUN!!! + + (where is the bagpipe emoji?!) = an awesome, exciting new sound! Alas, with it being our first practice together, despite great progress being made, we thought it might be safer to stick with a photo rather than a video for now But stay tuned (no pun intended)! ... Can you guess what tune we might be working on together? Many thanks must go to Mackay Church of Christ for the awesome venue!

10.01.2022 Marching practice at band tonight, to get ready for our performance at... The ***Whitsundays Arts Festival*** at beautiful Airlie Beach! The festival runs this weekend, 3-5 October, and the Mackay and District Pipe Band is the grand finale, playing at 12pm on Monday! ... How good is it to be out and about, playing again, in this glorious Queensland spring weather?! Visit Whitsundays, Queensland, Australia

10.01.2022 Last weekend saw the Band come together for what was only our second play out for the year! The Band played for the residents of Breezes Retirement Village, Eaglemount Retirement Village & Resthaven Aged Care. It was fantastic to come together as a band and play for the public again. Resthaven provided us with the following feedback. the residents love you guys you guys need to come back...some ladies even waited outside for you all to change your mind you all were fantastic...soo a big thank you It was our pleasure.

09.01.2022 When you hear the pipes, what are you reminded of?

06.01.2022 Don't miss out on the early bird ticket price that ends on 26th of January. Make sure you contact Goosies Sports Club on 49423393 to secure your ticket.

06.01.2022 Just kidding. We all know EVERYONE loves the sounds of bagpipes...right?

05.01.2022 Anzac Day 2021 was an absolutely huge day for the band. Most members awake at 3am playing at at least 5 ceremonies and getting to bed just before midnight. We wouldn’t change a thing! Being able to play our instruments to honour the men & women who have served for our country is our pleasure. Here are but a few of the awesome photos band member Christabell captured during the day

03.01.2022 How great it is to be back!! Back with a group of <10, outdoors, socially distanced and with lots of hand sanitizer and PPE, but BACK! We are following updates closely and will continue to follow advice from the government, while enjoying our time playing together (but always 1.5m+ apart). ... We can’t wait to be out there playing for Mackay folk again, when it’s safe to do so.

03.01.2022 Today several members of the band had the privilege to play a few tunes for our biggest fan Allan. When Allan’s carer Jenny contacted us to ask if we could play a few tunes for him while he is in town for Christmas we couldn’t say no! We hope you enjoyed it Allan!!!

03.01.2022 Not far away....

03.01.2022 Just one week after Anzac Day the band was back out marching on the streets of Mackay. Mackay Labour Day Parade 2021.

02.01.2022 Scots Wha Hae seems appropriate in these uncertain times. To our Townsville friends, we wish you well. From your kindred spirits in Mackay.

02.01.2022 Ummm. No words. WOW. This is incredible! Those harmonies Stunning performance by the The Keith Highlanders Pipe Band

01.01.2022 There really is no sound that stirs the soul in the way bagpipes do! Recently, our pipe major Derek surprised a woman celebrating her 90th birthday, who promptly burst into tears when he marched in playing his pipes. She also mentioned that she wanted the pipes played at her funeral, to which someone else responded, Well, that’s why we organized this, so you’d get to actually hear them! Gotta love people with a sense of humor! ... Then last night, piper Jen and her dancer-drummer daughter Haylee made a surprise appearance at a 70th birthday...which again was promptly met with tears, then much joy and singing and dancing. Apparently, this surprise even beat the Wally Lewis video message This prompted a discussion between Jen and Haylee on the drive home about how special it is to use your gifts and talents to spread joy - and something about the pipes is just extra good at that And we all went home to bed feeling warm and fuzzy! Music isn’t just about a bunch of notes that come together to make tunes, music is about FEELING and JOY Message us if you have an upcoming event that could be made even better by a piper, a small group of pipers or even our whole band!
