11.01.2022 Pass It On Jamie Oliver started the Pass It On movement as a modern version of teaching cooking the old way before most of us lost the art of growing and cooking our own food we used to hand down recipes and pass on skills in our families. Pick any activity or skill you like from the garden or kitchen, check Magic Little Meals Part Five for inspiration. Show the skill to two students and then ask them to show it to two others. And so on! Keep passing it on outside of t...he class, eg: children teach two family members or neighbours, children from other classes. Learning a skill with the plan to pass it on adds another layer of engagement and passing it on is a lot of fun! Start with something simple such as cold rolls - they may come out looking wonky with first attempts but guaranteed to be tasty! A popular skill to use is the Stir Fry method (see video in previous post) or anything goes as long as everyone learns to pass it on. Whatever you choose, keep it simple. Pass It On is done by showing and telling (not reading a recipe) so keep your notes handy as a guide for the first person learning and to take home as a reminder. Write up simple steps to follow for your chosen skill, eg for cold rolls: Ingredients: 1. rice paper rounds (the smooth side is the outside) 2. vermicelli noodles 3. vegetables eg: carrot, cabbage, lettuce, celery any greens from your plot, include herbs, eg mint, parsley and sprouts are great in rolls. Prepare your ingredients: chop vegetables finely vermicelli noodles soak in warm water for 2 minutes, then drain. Set up ready for demonstration: Lay out your ingredients and a large bowl of warm water Demonstrate: 1. submerge a round of rice paper in warm water for 2 seconds then remove and lay flat on a board (smooth side down) 2. place a line of vegetables and vermicelli noodles in the top third of the paper (experiment with how much, depends on how thick you like your roll) 3. fold the left and right edges of the rice paper in, then starting from the bottom, roll up to cover your ingredients, tuck them in and keep rolling firmly, the rice paper is sticky it will seal itself at the end. Note: Vietnamese cold rolls are traditionally served with a delicious peanut sauce but you can substitute any tasty sauce or eat them plain.

08.01.2022 Saving and raising seeds are great projects for the class. Read up on seeds: Lolo Houbein’s One Magic Square (Wakefield Press): Seeds & Seedlings pages 184 to 192, then read Saving Seed 193 to 200 for inspiration, ideas and lots of information on how to save and raise seedlings. Check Diana Bickford’s tips on raising seeds as a quick guide. Class Activities: - Save seeds from your food plants, dry them on the stalk. - - Sprout seeds like mung beans and alfalfa for add...ing to sandwiches and salads. - Decorate pots, fill with seed raising mix and plant with easy fast growing seeds (peas, sunflowers), children take the pots home to grow and harvest. - Direct sow a range of seeds into a plot in the school garden, keep a garden diary to record progress. - Lolo’s magic bean project (in Outside the Magic Square pg 172) plant broad bean seeds and do some maths calculating your harvest. Run a broad bean competition everyone plants the same number of broad beans at home and compare harvests. - Seed spices: play sensory games by tasting whole, crushing and blending seeds. - Make a seed raising table / frame. - Make seed packets ready for storing seeds you save, decorate with pictures of plants, date them and share. - Research project on seed saving around the world, order some heritage seeds.
