22.01.2022 In December 2017, Mikayla gifted her first 5 bears to the Swinge Family. The bears are handmade by Mikayla, which when squeezed give this special message: You are special, never give up. Since then, Mikayla has gifted over 25 bears to children who have gone on a first ever getaway with the Magical Getaway Foundation. This is her story

22.01.2022 For many families, holidays mean a much needed break from the everyday pressures of life. Unfortunately many families are unable to afford to take these breaks. At MGF we gift first ever holidays to families in need. It’s not about the getaway, it’s what the holiday brings which creates hope for the future. Holidays improve well-being, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and strengthen family communication and bonding. For some, these breaks are desperately needed in order to... recover from trauma. They create lifetime treasured memories and increased community participation while decreasing social isolation. For families referred to the Magical Getaway Foundation - Holidays are about #HOPE.

20.01.2022 Earlier this month we had our last highway collection for the year and it was our biggest one yet We were able to raise just under $3,000 to send more families on their first ever holiday! As we currently dont receive any Government funding, we rely solely on donations from the public, including highway collections to keep us going. A huge thanks to all of our collectors who helped during the year; we couldnt have done it without your support

20.01.2022 Our last post, in a series of three, will again explore why first ever holidays/getaways are the most magical gifts for families in need. We would like to acknowledge and thank the Family Holiday Association in the UK for their insights and ongoing support. "It’s the first time we have been able to forget the world’s troubles, the ups and downs and the challenges we have faced. We are so thankful for the opportunity to spend this quality time together on our first ever #holid...ay." - Kirsty When things get tough, undertaking the same day to day activities or household chores can become overwhelming. It can also be a reminder that the current situation is all a family has to look forward to. This is where a first ever holiday/getaway, away from the routine of life, could be just the thing to #change someone’s mindset. By offering a #family in need such a special #gift, it is offering a chance for them to escape the routine of life, and look forward to a fun activity or simply relax into a leisurely break away. It also offers them the chance to make lasting memories together; which is #magical!

These are the words of Darshana Gadaria, one of the fantastic volunteers with the Magical Getaway Foundation! Darshana, in her close-knit family of four, has always cherished time away with her parents and brother. Darshana joined MGF from her desire to bring "hope and happiness" to Australian families through her knowledge and skills.... Darshana initially completed a Bachelor of Business Administration in India. She then continued her studies in the United States, graduating in 2012 with a Masters of Science in Management Information Systems and an MBA in International Business. 14.01.2022 We all now know and feel what it means to be isolated. For some this is normal. This is the same for the families we help in Australia. ... Read the full article https://bit.ly/3eYQbhb

11.01.2022 Happy Mother’s Day! Providing underprivileged Australian families with their first-ever holidays has led us to meet some amazing women and mothers. While much of our focus behind these getaways are on the kids, it is important to acknowledge the benefits experienced by the whole family.... Of those who have been referred to MGF, 30% have faced domestic violence, and 10% are experiencing homelessness or poverty, both of which are disproportionately experienced by women. All families referred are experiencing complex issues; on many occasions, more than one. For mothers, these holidays can represent a chance to recover from the hurdles life has thrown at them. Having time away from the everyday stresses of life provides parents/carers with the ability to solely focus on their child's well-being, mental health, and happiness, which can be overlooked when dealing with serious hardships. It’s not about the holiday; it’s what the holiday brings HOPE which helps repair families and cultivate lifelong dreams.

10.01.2022 During the pandemic many of us have felt anxiety, stress and isolation. While a lot of us cant wait till the end of lockdown to embark on new adventures and travels, for some, the ability to escape from the hardships of everyday life is not an option. Kaylah and Bianca, her mum, were struggling every day behind closed doors. Driving past their rented home, no-one would know the pain and suffering both had experienced including horrific domestic violence which had led to Kayl...ahs high absenteeism from school, destructive behaviour and severe anger outbursts. She was only eight at the time. That was when the agency involved with the family contacted us. Twelve months after the life-changing experience, Kaylah was doing really well at school. When asked about the impact their first-ever holiday had made, Bianca replied, I now have a job, Ive bought a car and am looking forward to going on my own holidays. Hope is crucial for children and families facing hardships. By providing families like Kaylahs with the chance to take a break we can improve well being, reduce stress and increase self-esteem. You can learn more about Kaylahs story at: https://magicalgetawayfoundation.org/kaylas-story/

09.01.2022 THANK YOU FOR 2019 This year we sent 8 families (30 individuals) on their first ever holiday. They travelled to local Victorian holiday destinations such as Inverloch, Lorne and Phillip Island. "This holiday was like a godsend. I really appreciate the effort the MGF do to offer people like myself the opportunity to experience this, because there is no way I would be able to afford a lovely place like this..." Victoria Sumner - March 2019.... Its not about the holiday, its what the holiday brings; a new sense of hope and precious memories that will last forever. We hope to bring many more magical moments in 2020 as we continue to pioneer Social Tourism in Australia.

07.01.2022 "Helping, inspiring and providing vulnerable families with opportunities they may not otherwise have had, strengthens us all." This is the philosophy of Tony Johnson, another one of our amazing Directors at the Magical Getaway Foundation! Tony was initially inspired to join MGF by the "sensational people who devote their time, free of charge, to give people hope and inspiration for the future."... Tony is passionate about strengthening communities and supporting its most vulnerable members. He has more than 35 years experience working in the #family, #youth, #publichealth and emergency management fields in Local Government. Tony has been a member of local kindergarten, primary school and sporting club committees and a junior cricket coach for many seasons. He has an active interest in outdoor activities and physical fitness and completed his fourth triathlon in Noosa, Queensland in 2019. For Tony, the chance to have "a beneficial impact on the lives of vulnerable or disadvantaged children and families in the community" has been an opportunity deeply cherished. We are very grateful for all that Tony has done, and continues to do, with MGF. #community #opportunity #hope

03.01.2022 Our thoughts are with everyone across Australia, in particular Victoria at this time. With new restrictions it can be a challenging time especially in the household. Here are a few ideas to help from headspace: Think about the fun things you all would like to do once restrictions ease... Write out a plan to help motivate yourselves Take it slow. Gradually try new things. You dont need to do everything straight away Start with something that seems easier, before moving to difficult things Be mindful of the use of alcohol and other drugs Keep in mind that things may change and restrictions could start again If youre struggling to cope and need support during these difficult times, please reach out: Lifeline: 13 11 14 Suicide Call Back Service: 1300 659 467 Beyond Blue: 1300 224 636 #InThisTogether
