24.01.2022 We have been talking to many people about feeding their bees, especially during a tough season like the one we are still experiencing here in WA. We came across this video on the topic and thought it may help. https://youtu.be/a6kpuqvMUVw
23.01.2022 A swarm flew into one of our sites today, while we were working with our bees. They are now boxed and about to be moved off-site
23.01.2022 UPDATE: This one is now SOLD, we will let everyone know as soon as more become available. Thanks Double Brood Box Hive For Sale Hi, we have placed some of our nucs in full sized hives and allowed them to grow into full depth, 10 Frame, double brood box hives.... As you all know, it has been a very slow bee-season here in WA, but finally our first full sized hive for this season is ready for sale! Here are some of the details: *The queen is a Magick Planet queen, raised & mated during January 2019. *They were transferred from their nuc to the full sized hive at the end of February, Super added at the end of March. *10 Frame, Full Depth Hive *Double Brood Box filled with brood and honey stores, ready for winter. *This hive has a vented floor and insulated roof. *This hive configuration will work very well with a FlowHive Super or by just placing a queen excluder on top of the hive and then adding a conventional honey super above the QE once the spring flow starts. *The exterior has a polyurethane finish. *Price: $600 *We are happy to deliver to the greater Perth area. Call us on 0427 422 784, or email us at: [email protected] or PM us for further details
23.01.2022 Every now & then a post urging the general public to put food out for bees do the rounds on FB, but please: Do not put food out for Bees To the public, please do not feed bees in gardens, etc by giving them sugar, grated fruit&water mixes or heaven forbid, honey. ... As beekeepers, honey bees are our livestock, to care for and to manage according to their needs. Beekeeping is a primary industry, producing honey and other bee-related products is farming. As we all know, it is the nature of bees to fly around and they are certainly not bound by fences and borders, however, even when they are out there gathering food, they are still our stock and the management of what they are fed or not fed at the time is down to the beekeeper. For instance, if a bee is fed sugar and they deposit their sugar in honey comb destined for harvest, the harvested honey will be contaminated with sugar and the beekeeper may end up selling sugar contaminated honey unwittingly. Feeding bees honey is not only very dangerous to bee colonies as it could spread diseases which may lead to them being euthanised, in the case of American Foulbrood, but it also against the WA Department of Agriculture guidelines. The public can help bees, European Honey Bees as well as our Native Australian Bees, by planting bee friendly flowering plants, such as herbs, fruit trees and most native flowering plants. Another huge help would be for people to stop using poisons and weedkillers, poisons (sprays) are the number 1 threat to bees. ***Please feel free to Share this message far & wide ***

21.01.2022 Lots of pollen coming into the hives at the moment
20.01.2022 Guessing the cleaner met one of those flying jalapenos....
20.01.2022 With 5 days around the 40C mark predicted for Perth, bees are going to need good water sources to keep their hives cool.
19.01.2022 There was some emerging happening (again!) during the graft today ...

16.01.2022 Why would a bee-dog sleep on a comfy seat if she can sleep on nucs?
16.01.2022 What do bees do on a hot day? Go shopping for waterfront property, of course!
16.01.2022 Last minute pollen collection before the stormy weather really sets in
15.01.2022 The Marri is flowering and we are seeing a lot of nectar being stored, which is excellent news after this crazy dearth we have just been through. But, as is often the case, grumpy bees is the price we have to pay for the Marri flow and this year seems to be a particularly 'grumpy year' for our hives. If you are a new beekeeper and your normally 'laid back' bees turn into little devils over the next few weeks ... know this too shall pass, no need to requeen
15.01.2022 Lucky enough to catch one of our queens coming back from her mating flight today
15.01.2022 Have you noticed that your bees are more aggressive during inspections lately? Well, it is 'time' again .... Marri/Redgum trees are flowering and the bees are trying to get as much of the nectar as possible. The Redgum flow is late this year and, in lots of areas, very light. However, the bees are still reacting to the Redgum flow, and even more so towards the end of the Redgum flow by becoming a lot more defensive of their hives and stores, which result in beekeepers havin...g to deal with their placid little angels turning into flying demons suddenly. This is a phase and it happens to some degree during every Redgum/Marri nectar flow. You will notice things returning to normal a few weeks after the flow has stopped and your little angels will make a welcome return. Don't requeen, wait for all the Redgum madness to pass. If you find that your bees have swarmed or another queen has moved in, by all means replace the queen, but for the most part, all should settle once Redgum season ends.

10.01.2022 MAGICK PLANET - Feeding Sugar Syrup to nucs Today was nuc feeding day, again We use ziplock bags to feed our nucs as well as our hives. By feeding inside our hives and nucs, robbing and ants are discouraged. Just remember, always use plain, refined white sugar to make your sugar syrup. We use a 1sugar:1water (by weight) mix to stimulate growth and drawing our of frames & a 2sugar:1water (by weight) mix when the hives are in maintenance mode, mainly during winter.

09.01.2022 Water duties today
09.01.2022 A whole bunch of reasons why we should be consuming local, raw honey. There is also some info about why we should be paying more attention to looking after the environment so the bee can make good honey for us and our health.
08.01.2022 WAAS have posted the details for their next Beginner's Beekeeping Course on the 30th of March. We highly recommend attending WAAS' Introduction to Responsible Beekeeping Course for anyone starting out on their beekeeping journey. https://waas.org.au/event-3308900/Registration

07.01.2022 Moving bees under the full moon tonight.
06.01.2022 Very happy to see some good drone & drone brood numbers at last! We can only graft queens once we know that there are sufficient drones to ensure that our new queens are well mated. The hives have been a bit slow with their drone production this spring, but they always know best how to time these things
06.01.2022 Pesticide use is one of the biggest dangers bees face, it can kill hives in a day
05.01.2022 Our recent ad in BeeInformed magazine. We are taking orders for Spring Nucs now

03.01.2022 Many people have been asking us about our view on feeding bees.... The short answer is: Yes, when our bees need food, we feed them. The long answer is:... We are beekeepers/farmers/primary producers, we are not conservationists and European Honey Bees are not native to Australia. As with all farming stock, we see it as our responsibility to provide for them when natural food is not available to them. Feeding bees sugar syrup, pollen and/or pollen substitutes will not make them lazy and dependent on the food we provide. If there is sufficient nectar and pollen available to them from their local plant sources, they will not touch the food we supply to them, but during times such as this extreme dearth we are experiencing this season, feeding is a much needed lifeline for our bees. We have heard the argument that feral hives 'do not need feeding', but the reality is that those feral colonies are starving and absconding from their hives in droves this season. Do not be afraid to feed your bees, they will not become lazy or dependant. If they stop taking the food provided to them, they have found a natural source of food, but keep an eye on them and make sure that they have enough stores, especially going into the winter period. Our weather and flowering has been so unpredictable this season, flows can start and stop at random! Just bear in mind, once your hive/s have enough stores and they are ready to go into honey production for harvesting, stop feeding them sugar and provide them with new or empty frames, preferably in a separate super, to ensure that your harvested honey does not contain sugar syrup.
01.01.2022 WA's new beekeeping season is about to start. We have made a video for people who may be thinking of entering the world of beekeeping this season, we hope you enjoy it! Magick Planet : Beekeeping Basics - 1 This is a video for people starting out on their beekeeping journey in Western Australia. We talk to many people who are about to enter the world of bees (warning - they are addictive!) and thought it may help to share some of our techniques.
