24.01.2022 Stifle Dysfunction in Young Horses The equine stifle and human knee are remarkably similar, anatomically and physiologically, although the stifle is more co...mplex and generally more stable. Both joints use cruciate and patella ligaments, along with other stabilizing structures, to connect the bony framework that make up the joint: the tibia, fibula, femur and patella (knee cap). Horses have much bigger quadriceps and three patella ligaments (middle, medial and lateral patellar ligaments) compared to only one in humans. These extra ligaments are a part of the locking mechanism that allows the horse to lock its patella and achieve a deep resting state while standing up. The medial patellar ligament has the important function of hooking over a notch in the end of the femur when the horse is standing still. This stabilizes the stifle and allows the standing or snoozing horse to bear weight on the hind leg without muscular effort. Normally, the ligament slides out of the notch when the horse swings its leg forward as it begins to walk. If the ligament gets hung up and doesn’t slip into an unlocked position, the hind leg can’t be flexed forward and the horse has to drag the stiffened limb forward for a few steps before the ligament releases. This is commonly known as a locking/sticking stifle or upward fixation of the patella (UFP). UFP is a young horse disease. This is largely due to the fact that still-maturing young horses, particularly those in training for sports that require intense use of the hind end such as show jumping and more advanced dressage, have inadequately developed quadriceps among other hindquarter stabilisers. This causes instability in the patella, which prevents it from unlocking. Something I see a lot of are intermittent stifle issues in horses between the ages of 3-8 years old, especially in those who have started entered their training and competition years. Young horses are especially vulnerable during growth spurts. As the bony structures lengthen and change, the muscles and ligaments often become too tight or in some cases, more lax depending on the changing bones and joint angles. A tight muscle is a weak muscle, it simply cannot perform at its full potential. Since the stifle joint consists of four bones and various ligaments, this area is frequently involved in growth-related problems. As a young horse’s stifle bones develop, it can take time for the slower growing ligaments to catch up and for the multitude of hind end musculature that stabilise and move the stifle to lengthen and strengthen. During growth periods, riders often comment that their previously problem-free horses now feel weak or disconnected behind and notice a reduction in performance or willingness to work. Other symptoms of stifle dysfunction during growth spurts are Stumbling more frequently Fall out behind/trip behind The stifle joints may click or pop Lack of willingness to walk downhill Inability to walk in a straight line downhill - horses will try to angle themselves Intermittent near collapse in severe cases Although these symptoms occasionally indicate structural problems, they are most often signs of weakness. Further contributing factors to stifle dysfunction Unfit horses Horses in poor physical condition Horses on prolonged box rest Long term dysfunction in the hind end, back, and hock causing altered movement patterns Poor hoofcare There are some reports of young horses that have exhibited no further signs of UFP after gaining up to 50kg. The belief is that increased fat behind the patella reduces the chance of the medial ligament catching on the femoral trochlea Treatment Most horses will respond favourably to training and conditioning to increase strength and coordination of the quadriceps muscles. Most young horses with UFP will grow out of the condition with increased fitness and strengthening of hind end musculature. The activities below will all help Osteopathic treatment and management Hill work Pole work Transitions Small grids Stretches Gymnastic exercises Water walking/swimming The young horse in this photo has stifle dysfunction in the left side where you can see underdevelopment of the quadriceps and excessive tension in the TFL
24.01.2022 I very rarely post a fundraiser to my business page but for Wendy, I will break my own rules. As many of you know, part of my business is dedicated to giving back to horses who have been rescued from awful conditions. I have had the pleasure of working with many beautiful horses who have survived neglect and abuse thanks to the horse rescues and sanctuaries who saved them when they were completely out of hope. Wendy was instrumental in helping to save these horses horses sh...e would not meet personally, but who she donated to to help the sanctuaries and rescuers save them, and then she donated for their ongoing care as well. I knew when I worked with these horses that so many people behind the scenes had rallied together in the hopes of giving this horse a new life filled with love and kindness and hope. Me standing in a paddock massaging this horse was the result of the dedication and generosity of many supporters and volunteers who had shown up and said to this horse 'We will help you you are safe now'. Wendy was always there front and centre doing whatever she could to prevent another horse (and other animals too) from suffering. It wasn't just her donations and generosity that she shared she also knew just the right words of encouragement and support to help during the highs and saddening lows that accompany rescue work. She was a beacon of light in this world and countless animals are safe, happy and well today because she stood behind them and supported so many horse rescues and sanctuaries to do such important and valuable work. Thank you Wendy we will always remember your passion and kindness. See more

Never attempt to stretch cold muscles! * Begin slowly (especially if your horse is not used to stretches). Never force a stretch!... * Always ensure your safety and your horses safety. See more
20.01.2022 Happy Friday everyone! Heres a good tip for all the horse owners out there Enjoy your weekend

16.01.2022 My lovely friend and very talented therapist is having a hands-on skeletal anatomy workshop this weekend and there are still a few spaces available (if you move quickly) . It will involve examining structural anatomy, function of the joints and spine, as well as some common skeletal diseases and how they impact the lives and wellbeing of horses. See the info below and send her a message. Cost is $150pp.
14.01.2022 Arty (the smarty pants) showing me where I should put the Pink Goop. He then decided that maybe Pink Goop might be alright to lick I let him smell it but moved it before he stuck his nose in. Got to be quick with this one. Your boy is a funny fella Amanda Fludder but we wouldnt have it any other way
13.01.2022 Day five of our six days of stretching thanks to Equestricare Equine Sports Therapy. We did the foreleg stretches yesterday, so it makes sense to do the hind leg stretches today. Hopefully by now you will know what to remember when it comes to any stretch for your horse, but if you dont, just check in with the previous posts :)
12.01.2022 Team work makes the dream work! Lovely to see Kate (Equine osteopath) from Happy Horse Sports Therapy - Kate Williams Shorter today who visited with one of my clients horses - the gorgeous Rappy. Thanks Kate for being so awesome Thanks Lieke Star for having Kate and I out, and thanks Rappy for being a great patient. #loveworkingwithothertherapists
12.01.2022 And last, but certainly not least, Day Six of our six days of stretching thanks to Equestricare Equine Sports Therapy. Todays stretches are good for maintaining your horses neck. If you dont feel comfortable doing any stretch, then please dont do it. I personally dont like the Tongue Stretch due to the potential to do damage to the hyoid if not done correctly, so if you are unsure about what youre doing, please do not do this stretch. And remember: * Always make su...re your horse is warm before any stretching exercises. Never attempt to stretch cold muscles! * Begin slowly (especially if your horse is not used to stretches). Never force a stretch! * Always ensure your safety and your horses safety. See more
12.01.2022 In exciting news, I have decided that I am going to train to become an equine osteopath at the Vluggen Institute! Some of you know that I have been thinking about this for a little while, and spending time with current equine osteopathy student Kate from Happy Horse Sports Therapy - Kate Williams Shorter has made my decision easier. It will be a big commitment and there are still some logistics to work out regarding travel, but I have decided I'm going to do it!
11.01.2022 Had me some Romeo time today This boy is just the sweetest fella, and really likes his massage and bodywork. It actually looks like hes smiling Romeo and his owner and sponsored rider Mikki Woodward are getting ready for the SREC Showjumping Competition on 25 July

09.01.2022 Welcome to what I am calling the six days of stretches Our good friends at Equestricare Equine Sports Therapy have produced some wonderful posters on stretching (which I will be sharing with you over the next six days with their permission) - starting with carrot stretches A few things to remember when doing stretches with your horse: * Always make sure your horse is warm before any stretching exercises (stretching cold muscles is a recipe for disaster). Never attempt to... stretch cold muscles! * Begin slowly (especially if your horse is not used to stretches). Never force a stretch! * Always ensure your safety and your horses safety. There are some great resources and courses available at www.equestricare.com.au so pay them a visit

07.01.2022 Massage session and then breakfast! Rappy knows the best way to start her mornings Beautiful Finn also got a massage and agrees with me that he is indeed one very good looking boy! Thanks Lieke for letting me spend time with your gorgeous horses.
06.01.2022 I spent part of today with Amanda Vellas - Bella Vita Equine Welfare and Horse Sanctuary rescue horses Mason and Indy. Mason (27yrs) lost his best friend Aadi last week as Aadi was given his wings because his knees could not be managed anymore and were starting to hurt him. Mason was devastated and grieving so much that he just stood in the corner of a stable and refused to eat Aadi and Mason (pictured together in the last photo) were like two peas in a pod insepar...able until last week. Then Amanda (the founder of Bella Vita) heard of a horse who was on the kill list, so she decided to rescue him and hope that he and Mason would become fast friends. Here they are today. Whilst my heart hurt at Aadis absence today, my heart was also filled with happiness for these two. Indy has been rescued (another life saved) and gets to live out his days surrounded by people who love and care for him. Mason gets a new friend who will help his heart heal. Aadi will always be remembered and adored by all of us who knew and loved him, and now Indy will too (as Mason is). Being involved with horse rescue can be incredibly heartbreaking and sad at times, but so worthwhile and rewarding. I have been involved with horse rescues for many years and Majestic Horse Equine Massage and Bodywork WILL ALWAYS dedicate time to working with chosen horse rescues and treating their rescue horses pro bono. Its a value of my business that will always be upheld, and my small way of giving back and making every horse feel majestic, wanted and loved. Today was a good day See more
06.01.2022 Happy Friday everyone! Have a wonderful weekend and I hope you get to spend some quality time with your horse
06.01.2022 Spent some quality time with my sponsored riders steed Romeo today. He always makes me feel guilty when I leave Mikki Woodward
06.01.2022 It can be hard being a horse owner!! The owner of this beautiful dressage horse is at her wits end. She’s been struggling with the horses behaviour, performance... & soundness for nearly 2yrs. She has the best ‘qualified farrier’ in her area shoe her horse every 6 weeks & in that time the horse has had a number of treatments from her vet, as well as regular chiro & body worker. A friend of hers told her about us & last week she rang to see if we could assess her horse. Monday she made the 3hr trip to Woodend to get her horse evaluated & HoofScanned. Below are the xrays of her horses hind feet only 1 week after shoeing. The job was really neat, nice fit, finish & good nailing. But both hind feet are NPA by -5deg. On speaking with her farrier about this she did not get an overly good reception unfortunately & she is very nervous about what may happen. I know I sound like a broken record, but this is the result of another case of caudal failure & a farrier missing obvious external indicators consistent with the problem. If you are having behavioural issues, undiagnosed soundness &/or performance issues I would recommend starting with the feet & getting objective data via podiatry radiographs. Surely what we do must be for the benefit of the horse!
05.01.2022 Happy Mother’s Day to all the two-legged and four-legged mothers out there. What would we do without you?!

05.01.2022 So excited to be collaborating with EUR Equestrian for this Super Spring Competition! Its a great prize package, so write a funny caption for the expression on the horses face and like the post and Facebook pages, and youre in the competition
04.01.2022 If you have just had a baby and are looking to get back in the saddle but dont really know where to start, then this Fitness for Mums is something you need! The great part is that the plan incorporates your horse into the activity, so you can strengthen your body while also working with your horse
04.01.2022 Happy Friday peeps! Somehow I dont think this person put 100% effort into completing the task Whatever you have on your schedule for this weekend, give it your all and enjoy
03.01.2022 Happy Friday everyone! Do any of you do this as well? Have a great weekend
