24.01.2022 When can babies eat eggs? What are the benefits? How many eggs per day? Here are some easy and delicious ways to introduce eggs to your baby when first starting solids and beyond! Scrambled: if spoon-feeding, puree with a little breastmilk/formula or milk. For self-feeding, keep them on the clumpier side so its easier to grab. Feel free to add some avocado, banana, yogurt, soft-cooked fruits and vegetables! Hard-boiled: cut into quarters. Try sprinkling a little spice fo...r more flavor. You can also mash with some avocado or other soft foods like sweet potatoes and oatmeal. Preload onto a spoon or spread onto toast. Egg veggie pancakes - such a versatile recipe! You can add whatever vegetables you wish Added to oatmeal: stir in beaten egg about 5 minutes before the end of the cooking time. Frittata and quiche: Make in mini muffin pan and slice in half or in strips Toast roll-ups: Soak bread in egg to make it softer for babies to manage. Have fun with the fillings! #Malabar

24.01.2022 Lots of great benefits to teaching your kids to bake: 1) They learn how to plan what ingredients they need and organizing their work space before they begin. 2) They learn how to read instructions and follow them in order. 3) They learn how to find the correct measuring cup or spoon and scoop the ingredients.... 4) They work on their hand eye coordination skills as they are pouring the ingredients into the bowl. 5) They strengthen their arms and shoulders as they mix the ingredients with a whisk or wooden spoon. 6) They work on their bilateral coordination skills when they use a rolling pin to flatten their dough. #Malabar

23.01.2022 Top 8 allergen-free toast ideas! If youre struggling with what to feed your child with food allergies, I dedicate this post to you. Even if there are no allergies,These ideas may help up your toast game ;). For babies you can cut into strips or smaller pieces once their pincer grasp develops... From 12 months on, you can start offering a half to whole slice of bread as a way to encourage them to learn to take bites. You can certainly turn these toasts into sandwiches too! If your child decides to only eat the toppings or the bread, you still get to pat yourself on the back for serving a balanced snack/meal! Keep exposing. #Malabar

19.01.2022 Think about the ways we intentionally and unintentionally teach our children what is important in life. . Living Space: How and what we keep in our homes is an open display of what we value spending our time and money on. Is your home generally tidy or a dusty hot mess? Do you keep knick-knacks everywhere or scale back with carefully chosen decor? The individual items themselves like books and films also send a message to our kids about what we think is worth our attention.... . Family Meetings: If recent events have taught us anything, its that being vocal and actively engaging in conversation about what we believe and cherish is one the most important ways we can educate our children. . Conflict Resolution: The way we handle conflicts can signal a sense of trust and resiliency, a desire to calmly and respectfully engage. Or, it can also signal your value to be right and to be in charge. Your method of discipline (natural consequences vs. grounding for example) is included here. . Family Activities: Leisure time, Family field trips, vacations, and holidays - where you go and what you do when you get there says a lot about your priorities. . Expectations: Is there only a handful of professions youd find acceptable for your kids to pursue? Is there only one right way to behave? Your narrowness or openness about what is appropriate or defines success can define how a child sees themselves for the rest of their lives. . Love & Affection: This encompasses not only physical affection (though thats a big part) but also our small acts of love, the notes, the extra scoop of ice cream, the blanket after falling asleep on the couch. This includes the words we use and the decisions we make to postpone our own demands and at least listen to our children when they express a genuine need. #Malabar

19.01.2022 Trust is a fundamental part of a successful, nurtured relationship. Children inherently trust us from birth and our actions sometimes result in them losing trust in us as they grow up. . 1The process of our children losing trust in us as parents starts very early. Have you ever said something like, "stop fighting or Im turning this around and going home"? If we never actually turn the car around, it becomes an empty threat. Gradually they will not trust what we have to say.... Be truthful and respect them enough to explain why when youre not able to follow through with something you previously promised. . 2No one wants to be belittled, especially by the people who are supposed to represent unconditional love. Kids dont understand sarcasm till nearly age 10. Your "jokes" that minimise their interests can be internalised quite painfully. . 3Basic listening, not just hearing, goes a long way in the emotional development of our kids. They literally need to felt heard. That means not responding, not defending, or interrupting. Just listen, make eye contact, and allow their words to be expressed. . 4Privacy can be a touchy subject based on your family values and your own upbringing. However, if you expect them to respect your privacy, it is only right that you allow them an appropriate level of privacy as they age. 5Maintaining consistent boundaries shows that you truly believe in what you say and you are willing to hold the same standards for yourself. #Malabar

18.01.2022 What is the best legume (beans, peas, lentils) for my child? Here you can see that all of these are pretty similar in their nutritional profile. Legumes are awesome sources of fibre, protein, and folate (for all you pregnant mamas!), and prebiotics. If theyre not a staple at your house, add them to your list ASAP! They are so versatile, filling, and affordable!! Try to do meatless dinners at least 2 times a week and enjoy a variety of legumes throughout the week. Ad...d to dips, baked goods, scrambled eggs, salads, tacos, soups, chili, pasta, rice dishes, curries, casserolesThere are endless possibilities! Fun facts: Did you know that legumes are considered both a vegetable and protein food? Dried beans are just as nutritious as fresh or canned. With the latter, be sure to rinse and look for low or even better, no-salt-added. #Malabar

18.01.2022 Heres a super easy, fun, interactive, and delicious meal idea - have your child create their own sushi! . The basic ingredients youll need: large unsalted nori (seaweed) sheets - sliced into smaller pieces cooked rice (I like to mix with a little bit of vinegar and sesame oil)... protein of choice: fried eggs, tofu, chicken, salmon, etc. vegetables: can use whatever you wish. If theres a veggie that your child is learning to enjoy, this would be an AWESOME opportunity to encourage them to try! Simply place on the plate with the other ingredients and see what they do! They just might surprise ya other fun fillings: avocado, cheese, hummus... #malabar

18.01.2022 After your baby turns one, things can get a little more interesting! (Before one, you may want to keep it to a little water at mealtimes only, as well as breast milk or formula.) Once your baby is one, you can give as much water as theyd like, both with and without meals. start transitioning to 16 oz of cows milk or an appropriate alternative (Or stick with breast milk! No need to keep it to strictly 16oz if you do, as its hard to measure, just aim for 3-4 times n...ursing at least each day.) Incorporate a small amount of juice if youd like. Juice is not nutritionally the same as a piece of fruit, and lacks the fibre that is in a whole piece of fruit, which can help to slow down its absorption into our system. Sticking with water and milk is great. But theres nothing wrong with a little bit of juice here and there if you choose to serve it. If you do decide to serve juice, keep it to no more than 4oz a day. Make up the rest of their fluid needs with water, and 16oz or less of milk. #Malabar

18.01.2022 Kids under age 6 watch an average of 2 hours of screen media a day, primarily TV, videos, or DVDs. Kids and teens 8 to 18 years spend nearly 4 hours a day in front of a TV and almost an addition 2 hours on the computer. With #Covid_19, these times have definitely increased! Here are some fun ways to decrease your childs screen time. Have them: Read a book! Play a game! ... Go out and be active! #Malabar

18.01.2022 Which one would your child go for first? These are also great for teaching your child to TAKE BITES. But dont expect this skill to be learned overnight. They will learn eventually when given plenty of opportunities! Keep offering. Keep role modeling. What are you and your childs favorite toppings?... #Malabar

17.01.2022 Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers. -Charles W. Eliot- A childs reading skills are important to their success in school as they will allow them to access the breadth of the curriculum and improve their communication and language skills. In addition, reading can be a fun and imaginative time for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them.... Studies show that reading for pleasure makes a big difference to childrens educational performance. Likewise, evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who do not, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures. #Malabar

16.01.2022 Do you know the difference between choking and gagging? Its an important distinction to know! Gagging can be common in those first few months of eating, but it isnt necessarily a bad thing! Gagging is actually your babys way of preventing choking, as it helps to get the piece of food out of their mouth before they choke on it. Choking happens when a food makes it past your babys gag reflex, and ends up in their windpipe. Most of what people call choking is actually... gagging! When your baby is gagging, the best thing you can do is let them figure it out! Dont show them youre scared, dont show them youre anxious, dont get up and pat them on the back. Just let them work it out themselves! If your baby is choking, it is often a much quieter event. They might turn blue, have a little cough that really doesnt function to get anything out, but they generally dont make noise! If this is happening, then you need to intervene immediately. Regardless of what method you are using to feed your baby (purees OR baby led weaning), someone should be CPR certified in your house, or at the very least know what to do when choking occurs. #Malabar

16.01.2022 Oral thrush is a yeast infection (known as Candida) of the mouth of young babies. Oral thrush usually presents as white patches on the lips, in the mouth, inner cheeks, and/or on the tongue. Many babies who have thrush exhibit mild or no symptoms at all, but babies who are experiencing symptoms may appear fussy when sucking (bottle, pacifier, or breast) and, could also develop a nappy rash due to yeast passing through their stools. Its important to know that a white... tongue does not automatically equate to thrush Milk intake can also stain a babys tongue. A good rule of thumb is to wipe the tongue with a warm, damp cloth.. If it seems less noticeable, then its probably milk residue which is most noticeable immediately after feedings. Dont hesitate to discuss any concerns or signs of oral thrush with your childs paediatrician. #Malabar

16.01.2022 Its easy to get caught up in "official" portion sizes. For vegetables, the "official" size is 1 Tbs per year of age for kids 1-3. But since when has any toddler anywhere followed the "official" recommendations? Certainly not mine. As a suggestion, for foods they never eat, put a "disgusted" serving size on their plate. For that food they pound (strawberries, anyone?), load them up. A suggested recommendation is 2-3 servings of fruits and 2-3 servings of veggies per ...day. But as we know - they may not eat veggies for 2 days and then eat as much as you on day 3. Its okay. And its okay to sub fruit for veg if they are going through a rough patch. #Malabar

16.01.2022 Tips for family time Part of what goes on in the home is the development of teamwork. Functional family life depends on the contribution of everyone. Assigning chores is the most productive way of teaching responsibility and accountability to your children. Doing chores with your child will help foster good communication skills. #malabar

14.01.2022 Pouches. How to use them for babies so they are developmentally appropriate, and what you should know when using them for toddlers. When we use them for toddlers and they are used mindlessly and as a way to override their hunger cues or not support their ability to connect with their eating environment. As much as companies would like parents to think theyre getting veggies in their kids with them, without kids actually tasting and seeing the vegetable, its not helping wi...th their acceptance of them, and thats really the goal. If you need something quick to throw in your bag, grab something like a gluten free blend of unsweetened fruits, nuts, and spices. Theyre just ground up fruits and nuts, so they have great ingredients. Your child has to actually sit there and experience them to eat them. And they last just as long in your bag as pouches. Its not all bad if you give pouches to your toddler occasionally. But do not rely on them daily! They really arent doing you any favors as you try to help your child develop a healthy relationship with food! #Malabar

14.01.2022 Is your baby spitting out food? Babies and toddlers spit for 3 reasons: They want to see the food before swallowing it. They made a motor mistake and their tongue pushed food forward. They have too much food in their mouth.... These are all normal and will happen A LOT as your babe masters solids. While babies are born with oral reflexes to learn to chew and swallow, mature chewing requires a lot of skills! To swallow just one bite, your baby needs to learn how to move their tongue, keep food on the side of the mouth, move the jaw up and down, and then move the food BACK to the center of the tongue to swallow. And often, babies will spit out food, visually inspect it, and put it right back in their mouths! So lets look at how you can help your child go from spitting to swallowing: Let it be. Your child is doing exactly what they need to do to learn how to chew and swallow. Try not to react or express that you are grossed out by it. Pace your child with small amounts of food within their reach at a time. Leave the food on the tray. Often baby will inspect it then pick it up and put it back in their mouth to try again. Talk to your baby about what they are doing. For ex: Wow! Looks like you have a big bite in your mouth. Was it too much? Looks like that big bite was too much for your mouth, and you had to spit it out. Bottom line: spitting out food is a normal and a necessary part of learning to chew and swallow. Expect it to happen a lot and seize the opportunity to coach your child along the way. #Malabar

14.01.2022 This can be a common issue, which can again be tackled with consistency! Too much sugar in the form of juices and sugary snacks and drinks has been linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes tooth decay affect mood and behaviour... affects sleep patterns Now what can you do about it: REPLACE - if they want to have an icecream, can you make frozen yogurt at home using fruit as a natural sugar source? KEEP OFFERING a variety of savoury items even if they dont eat it - so the child develops a taste for them over time CHECK LABELS of packaged foods to help you pick foods with less added sugar, or go for the reduced- or lower-sugar version BE FIRM and resist the childs demands; distract, model good behaviour, shop healthy! IMPROVISE: try offering veggies that are naturally sweet, like carrots, beetroot, peas or with dips like yogurt, spinach dip, or peanutbutter EAT THE FRUIT rather than drinking fruit juice.. The fiber slows down the absorption of sugar, which slows its impact on blood sugar. #Malabar

13.01.2022 Is your family is a fan of Corn? Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy : Fresh corn, cut off the cob, and tossed with beans, peppers, tomatoes, and avocado, and dressed with a little olive oil and lime juice. This is great on its own, in a tortilla, or as a side dish.... Corn fritters with fresh or frozen corn kernels are one of my favorites, and you can easily swap out any veggies you like! Grilled corn on the cob is sweet and smoky, and its even better when spiced with your favorite blend. Try it with BBQ spice rub, chili powder, or Tajn. You really cant go wrong sauteing fresh corn kernels with butter and bacon, right? Make your cornbread muffins extra sweet with the addition of fresh corn kernels, straight off the cob. #Malabar

13.01.2022 Did you know that raw apples are choking hazards for kids under 4? Many parents are still not aware! For babies just starting eating, stick to peeled, thinly cut, and cooked slices of apples. As they get more confident in eating towards the end of their first year you can start incorporating finely grated raw apples. As they get even more confident in chewing and biting, generally around 18 months or older, you can start to incorporate thinly sliced and raw apples. Think... thinly sliced like the apples on the left here. But at no time under the age of 4 would apples like the ones pictured on the right be considered safe. Chunks of the apple can break off and then block windpipes. #Malabar

13.01.2022 What children wear to child care? Showing respect for children and appreciation of their individuality is important to the development of their self-esteem. The clothes we wear and the way we dress are an important part of our everyday experience, and are a way for many people to express their culture, personality and individuality. In child care, what your child wears may also influence your childs health, safety, comfort, and wellbeing.... #Malabar startingblocks.gov.au//dressing-your-child-for-child-care/

11.01.2022 Does it surprise you just how easy it is to meet your toddlers daily vitamin C requirements? Feeding babies and toddlers can seem so complicated at times, but most of what they need can be met by offering a simple varied diet - even if they dont eat much! #Malabar

11.01.2022 Theres so much more we should be looking for in a highchair! They can be the foundation of your babys eating relationship. Not every single baby will have issues without a properly fitting highchair, many will. And often times it manifests as things like not wanting to sit still, throwing tantrums at the table, not eating much, refusing to go to the table, and the list goes on and on. These things tend to only be exacerbated as your baby turns into a toddler! The number ...one thing that I recommend in a high chair is foot support. Its so key to a productive mealtime experience! Picture yourself sitting on a high stool. Many times these chairs have nowhere to rest your feet. And when they dont, and our feet just dangle, we feel incredibly uncomfortable. Your child cant get comfortable at all, are constantly shifting, trying to find things to do with their feet. It leads to our hips not being stable, and their attention stays on their body more than it should. We dont want that when kids are eating! We want the chair to get them in the proper position and then be forgotten! #malabar

09.01.2022 If your child is trying to open the Play-Doh container or trying to zip his jacket and you see him struggling, try not to step in immediately (its so hard to hold back!). Allowing your child time to work through frustrating and difficult tasks will help build his perseverance. Be attentive and validate your childs emotions, and then empower your child to come up with his own solution or offer a tip. Offer a Break: If your child has been working at a task for a long time, ...they might just need to step back from it for a while. There are times that your child is feeling tired, hungry, or overwhelmed and just needs some assistance. You know your kids best and what level of guidance they need depending on their age, needs, personality, and the situation. #malabar

09.01.2022 If you have young children that may be suseptible to become addicted to screen time, consider putting a family media plan in place. By no means is it screen-free. Consider limits on how much, and where, and when media is appropriate. #Malabar

06.01.2022 Kids are very curious and in their young age they tend to explore a lot and this means that sometimes they might be playing with thing they shouldnt be. One of these is the electrical sockets around the house. A socket protector goes into the sockets around the house making it inaccessible to your kids and therefore making the house much more safe. These sockets are made by professionals and arrive factory certified unlike most other such products. Google search for this or ...check with your local electrical or hardware store for such devices ..... #childsafety

06.01.2022 Building strong links between home and child care services. Children benefit when their routines and experiences at home and in early education and care services such as child care and preschool are similar and supportive of each other, especially babies and young children, who may be starting early education and care for the first time. Having familiar routines and practices help relieve a childs separation anxiety while they settle in. It allows them to predict what is goi...ng to happen next and encourages them to feel as though they have a sense of control over what is happening in their environment. #Malabar https://www.startingblocks.gov.au//building-strong-links/

06.01.2022 How can you help your child lose weight? There is no ideal weight for our children as they are always growing! The primary goal shouldnt be to lose weight! Instead, it should be HEALTH and HAPPINESS! And efforts towards helping them find enjoyment in eating foods that help them grow and in activities that move their bodies... Here are some tips: Follow the division of responsibility and trust your childs innate ability to self-regulate. This will help them to grow into the body that is right for them NEVER put them on diets Cut out the weight talk Dont constantly talk about healthy eating Instead, simply model what healthy eating is. Actions speak louder than words Dont restrict food. Dont push low-calorie foods or try to control portion size. This will only lead to more undesirable behaviors Your child is entitled to eat as much as theyre hungry for Make it a family affair. Dont single out your child by offering diff. foods. For instance, if youre limiting certain foods, like sugary drinks, for your child, then the whole family should do so as well Dont forget! Your child can be heavy AND healthy! #Malabar

05.01.2022 During an illness, feeding practices are oftentimes guided by traditional or cultural beliefs and norms that encourage replacing usual diets with special foods Theres a fear that certain foods (like dairy and fibre, animal products, fats) can make the runs worse. But think again when you are restricting these foods. *Most important - focus on rehydration first!... *If breastfeeding, continue or increase during illness *Temporary lactose-free diet may benefit those with severe dehydration or malnutrition *BRAT (banana, rice, applesauce, toast) diet can be helpful bc theyre easier to eat. HOWEVER, dont let these be the only foods you serve *Resume usual diet as soon as you can. Dont shy away from offering *foods with protein, fibre, and fat. Theyre important in preventing malnutrition and will promote quicker recovery *Focus on offering calorically rich foods to make every bite count when the appetite may be down *Probiotics have been found to have a beneficial effect, although more research is needed. As you know, we esp. love our @lifewaykefir *Avoid fruit juices #malabar

03.01.2022 It can take time for your child to adjust to new food textures. Your child might cough, gag, or spit up. These are signs that your child is reacting to the food presented to him/her: - If your child gags after certain foods then that means that this food is still too advanced for his level. - Coughing usually occurs with gagging and it is the bodys natural defense against choking - Your child may spit food out when learning how to eat and chew that food successfully.... If your child starts to cough or gag, give them time to work through it on their own In certain cases they might vomit and this is normal and it is the bodys defense against choking Remember, eating is a new experience for children and this is all part of the learning process #Malabar
