25.01.2022 **Christmas Caution** Having just seen a case of chocolate intoxication in a curious Labrador who was left in the house with access to all the goodies under the Christmas tree, the team at MalagaVet would like to remind you about this common intoxication. A whole box of Lindt and another whole box of chocolates were gloriously consumed by this curious boy! Simply be aware of what tasty items are under your tree, and restrict your pet's access to the tree when you're not home to watch them. If you think or know that your pet has eaten chocolate, get in touch with us as soon as possible for advice and treatment. Merry Christmas everyone!

23.01.2022 Summer has officially landed in Perth! Were expecting a very warm week ahead of us, so its extra important that we all keep a close eye on our pets and wildlife. Small animals, including dogs and cats, are very susceptible to the heat as they are unable to sweat and their only way to cool down is by panting - which can be even more difficult for our short-faced breeds like bulldogs and Persians. We also tend to see an increase in the amount of paw injury cases during summ...er, usually due to walking on hot ground. The general rule is that if you cant comfortably hold the back of your hand on the ground for longer than 10 seconds, then its best not to walk your doggy. We have included a handy info sheet to this post with information on the risks and what to do if you suspect your pet might be suffering from heatstroke. If ever in doubt, please dont hesitate to call and speak to one of our friendly team members on 9248 3420. See more

20.01.2022 We had an unusual animal visit MalagaVet this morning, one of our clients noticed him by the front door. Not quite sure how he got there but he came to the right place! Our wonderful nurse Chris was happy to pick him up and escort him back to the garden! #allcreaturesgreatandsmall

18.01.2022 A little bit of (very cute!) native animal work this week at MalagaVet. This little possum came in for an xray of her injured foot and while it was very swollen there were no long bone fractures. She is able to use her foot. Shes being cared for by Native Animal Rescue carers, until such time that she may be well (and big) enough to be released. No two days are ever the same, thats why we love it!

16.01.2022 Exactly eight weeks since arriving at our clinic, little Pumpkin has left for his forever home This little man had a rough start to life, after being found by a member of the public in their roof! Things could’ve ended up a lot differently for little Pumpkin had he not been found, but thankfully he’s off the street, found a loving home, and won’t be able to contribute to the overpopulation of cats in Perth. It’s so important to desex our feline friends, not only to reduce the strain on rescue facilities but also to preserve our pets’ health and help prevent certain diseases. Is your little friend helping to ease the pressure on rescue groups? We’d love to see your adoption photos below!

16.01.2022 Notice - Computer Outage 13/2/20 Our computers will be down today between 12-2pm for some upgrade and maintenance work. We appreciate your patience in this time. 12.01.2022 Little Taj came to visit us today because he wasnt feeling too bright, but he sure did brighten up our day! Little birds like Taj are very delicate and their health can deteriorate rapidly, so its very important to keep an extra close eye on them especially as our days start heating up again. Wed love to see some photos of your feathered friends!

12.01.2022 PARVOVIRUS ALERT Wed like to let our community know that unfortunately over the last month we have had two confirmed cases of parvovirus in dogs from both the Malaga and Mirrabooka surrounds. Whilst parvovirus is well known for its serious health complications in puppies, it is not age restricted and this case has been seen in an adult dog who was not up to date with their vaccinations. Wed like to remind our clients and community to check their pets vaccine records, and urge you to get them up to date if theyre overdue. If you notice any of the signs listed in the photo attached, please dont hesitate to call our team! The sooner treatment is started for parvovirus, the greater the chance of a full recovery is.

10.01.2022 Wow its been one hot week here in Perth! With the Christmas season upon us some people are moving away and it is a shame to have to say goodbye. 08.01.2022 Our vet Dr Amelia recently returned from a trip where she spent a week helping wildlife carers and farmers affected by the bushfires in the east. Heres some of her reflections on the time spent there at the front line: " My experience as a Veterinarian volunteer for bushfire regions in NSW will stay with me forever. My friend Anita is an Australian veterinary colleague currently practicing in the UK. We met in Brisbane last week, borrowed a ute, hired a trailer and planned t...o drive to regional NSW to offer veterinary assistance, medical supplies and animal food to the areas recently affected by bushfires. Prior to our travel, we had successfully fundraised for medical supplies and cash donations to support our cause. Initially, we were apprehensive about the huge task ahead of us as fires were still active and the carnage to buildings, victims and wildlife was catastrophic. We did wonder if our good intentions were misguided and what did we really have to offer under these extreme circumstances. We sincerely thank businesses, family, friends and friends of friends who made monetary donations to us. We were able to call the affected places and ask what do you need? then purchase and deliver the goods. The majority of the time the request was for animal feed. I have included links below to the organisations we have had the pleasure of working with on this journey. Please consider making direct donations to these organisations as the selfless volunteers are rapidly running out of funds and time to save both farm and wild animals. In addition, please consider travelling to the NSW coast for a holiday in the future. Despite the bleak picture the media spreads, the majority of the regional towns are unaffected by bushfires and desperate for travellers to boost the tourism industry. " Please consider making a donation to smaller organisations listed below. While a huge amount of money has been donated to large organisations it is taking time to get to the front line where it is desperately needed. Every little bit will help: Wild2Free www.gofundme.com/f/rae039s-campaign-for-wild-2-free Alpha dog Animal army www.alphadog.org.au/donate South Coast Wildlife Rescue www.wildlife-rescue.org.au/ Wombat Care Bundanoon wombatcarebundanoon.com.au/contact-us/ Dimmocks Retreat Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation www.dimmocksretreat.com.au/donate

07.01.2022 The team at MalagaVet is very happy to be able to see you and your pets when you need us, especially in the last month where things have been so out of sorts. Im sure there are plenty of dogs out there who have never had so many walks, and cats whose daily napping routine is completely out-of-whack! You may find you notice more about your pets habits, and if anything is concerning you, know that we are here to help you. If you start asking yourself questions like these its time to get your pet checked: ... 1) Why is Fluffy constantly drinking from the water bowl AND the fish pond? 2) Does Fido always find it THAT hard to get up off his bed every time (not just first thing in the morning)? 3) Why is Jack scratching and licking himself ALL DAY LONG?! Now is a good time to take stock of your pets habits and health, and if you think something is not right, call us for an appointment for your pet today. The MalagaVet team is here for your peace of mind, so dont hesitate to call 9248 3420 whenever you need.

03.01.2022 Dear Pet Owners, our friends and community; Until advised otherwise we are open for business as usual at MalagaVet. We have instigated the following measures to help our community and animals stay healthy as follows: 1) Please call us prior to your visit if you have travelled overseas in the last 14 days or have met someone who may have the virus before you come to the hospital so arrangements can be made to safely examine and treat your pet(s).... 2) Owners visiting hospitalised animals will be suspended for the immediate future 3) Discharges may be conducted in majority over the phone so there is social distancing to protect our team and clients. 4) To limit person to person contact we have instituted a no handshake policy and we encourage you to keep at least 1.5 metres away from each other hand sanitiser is available in the reception area 5) Please limit numbers of persons bringing the pet into the hospital to one person per pet. Other family members may be asked to wait outside or in the car. 6) Additional daily cleaning measures are in place for high touch areas such as chairs, door handles and counter tops 7) Please use contactless payment where possible, our team member may be wearing gloves while processing your payment. Hand sanitiser is provided near the machine. We sincerely thank you in advance for your understanding. The health and safety of our team is very important to us, so we can continue to care for your pets during this uncertain time.

01.01.2022 The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has spread around the globe through human-to-human contact. There is currently only very limited evidence of two pet dogs and a cat testing positive to COVID-19, ALL owned by COVID-19 infected people. There is NO evidence that the pets are infectious to humans or other pets. As vets, we regularly vaccinate your pets against their own specific coronaviruses, but it is important to note that these coronaviruses are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from ...COVID-19 and cannot be passed onto humans. After handling your pets, make sure to wash your hands as a good normal hygiene measure. Please call us for if you have more questions about your pets and COVID-19. See more
