23.01.2022 Subject: CHURCH SERVICES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THE WELLBEING OF OUR COMMUNITY Please consider writing to your local MP with your concerns. Here is the letter we emailed to our MP Maree Edwards today.: We are grateful for the efforts and commitment of the government to contain the second wave of the COVID19 outbreak, and are pleased that the number of new cases is now low. However, we write to express our deep concern about the impact the prolonged closure of churches has had on... our congregation and community in the last few months. We are extremely disheartened that today’s update from the Premier has churches firmly shut, allowing only outdoor religious services in regional Victoria. Going from 10 people to 20 people is of no benefit to us. We have attempted outdoor services over the past few weeks, but are up against the elements: lack of flat space due to our church being on a hill; rain; no shelter from the cold south wind; neighbours mowing; dogs barking; noisy cars constantly driving past. As the Church leaders we are experiencing an increase in frustration, confusion and disappointment as we are not able to help those in need as we normally would due to the COVID19 restrictions. Meantime, our local pubs are able to open. There is unfairness and inconsistency in the numbers allowed for religious gatherings by comparison with other sectors. The restrictions in regional Victoria literally fail the ‘pub test’: Our church members are allowed to book a table of ten at the pub, remove their face coverings for two hours while eating and socialising, but are not allowed to walk up the street and worship together (with masks) for one hour. Church services should be an essential service for the hope and wellbeing of our community in this pandemic. Through Christ’s church, unparalleled spiritual, emotional, mental, psychological, and social benefits flow to His people and to the community at large. Historically, with the assistance of the local community and the vital input from the local church, people pull through difficulties and crises. The church is where individuals find hope, reprieve, support, and strength to go on with various life circumstances. With an approved COVIDSafe Plan and contact tracing in place, we believe that a local church service is a safe place for people to gather. Our church community has been working cooperatively with the government regulations since the beginning of this pandemic to ensure all COVIDSafe and social distancing measures are exercised. We now urge you to go into bat for regional churches and get them open as soon as possible.

03.01.2022 DOORS OPEN How marvellous that Victoria is close to being virus free. What an answer to all our prayers. We were very pleased and relieved when the Premier announced that the only restriction on places of worship is to comply with the density limit of 1 person per 4sqm, which means we can fit 33 people.... We are also required to wear masks indoors, to have a COVIDSafe plan, to keep 1.5m apart, and to keep a record of attendees for contact tracing. General comments from recent church attendees is that they love seeing each other again and worshipping inside the church building after the prolonged closure. Our service is at 10.30am. People are encouraged to ‘book in’ to avoid exceeding the limit. We look forward to further easing in future weeks allowing increased numbers. Gavin Alexander Pastor

02.01.2022 Our online services will continue, but today some of our church family met outside in two short services. Current government restrictions for Religion: Outdoor religious gatherings, with no sharing of food, drink or other items by participants, for up to 10 people plus a faith leader are allowed, facilities open for private worship for households or household bubbles, plus a faith leader. Only when there are no new cases for 14 days (state-wide) can public worship resume ind...oors . People of faith across regional and metropolitan Victoria have raised serious concerns about the unfairness and inconsistency in the numbers allowed for religious gatherings by comparison with other sectors in the current ‘third step’. The current restrictions in regional Victoria literally fail the ‘pub test’: if people of faith can gather in a restaurant or bar catering for a particular number of patrons (and remove their face covering), they ought to be able to put on their mask, cross the road and worship indoors in their faith community with the same numbers, provided equivalent COVID--safe practices are in place.
