16.01.2022 In response to the cancellation of ANZAC Day Services etc, most of us would have seen or heard about the suggestion for people to pause to honour the ANZACS at ...the end of their driveways instead of attending dawn services. Musicians have also been encouraged to get their instruments out to play the last post. Nads Henriks has put together a little ANZAC Day Service for people to use if they want. It has one hymn, the ode, the last post and rouse on it for people to follow if they want. Thanks Nads! See more

16.01.2022 Every DOM would agree...

16.01.2022 Vale Peter. Peter's dry wit and his commitment to the Maldon Brass Band will be sadly missed. Thoughts and best wishes to Peter's family at this sad time.

11.01.2022 Looks like fun!

08.01.2022 There was no shortage of bands from across Australia that entered the Royal South Street band competitions each year and in the early 1900s, some of them travel...led very long distances to be there. For this weeks #FlashbackFriday I'm going to highlight one of them. One of the most intriguing photos that is held in the VBL Archive is this photo of the Broken Hill City Band from 1906. When looking at the photo, you would see that it is the same as any other band photo taken from around this time - very formal and staged. Except, of course, this photo comes with a message to the Kalgoorlie Band! In 1906 the Broken Hill City Band travelled to Ballarat to compete in South Street. Their journey involved a train to Adelaide, then another train to Ballarat. The Kalgoorlie and Goldfields Infantry and Regimental Band conducted by Harry McMahon (brother of Hugh McMahon) was also at the 1906 contest - their travel was obviously much longer - a train to Albany, a ship to Adelaide then another train to Ballarat. The following list is of all the bands that competed in 1906 and the grades they were in: (Vic.) Ararat Model (B Grade) (Vic.) City of Ballarat (A & B Grades) (Vic.) Bairnsdale Municipal (A & B Grades) (NSW) Broken Hill City Band (A & B Grades) (Vic.) Collingwood Citizens’ Band (A & B Grades) (Vic.) Daylesford Citizens (B Grade) (Vic.) Eaglehawk Borough (B Grade) (WA) Kalgoorlie and Goldfields Infantry and Regimental Band (A Grade) (Vic.) Maldon Miners (B Grade (Withdrew from A Grade)) (Vic.) Prout’s Ballarat Brass Band (A & B Grades) (Vic.) Richmond City Band (A & B Grades) (Vic.) St. Augustine’s Orphanage Band (A Grade) (Tas.) Ulverstone Rangers (A & B Grades) (the list is sourced from a blog post I wrote on this competition) The 1906 South Street band section was wracked with controversy due to the choice of the adjudicator, the grading and the results. There was no doubting that St. Augustine's band was the clear standout as the cleaned up all sections and were awarded the Sutton Shield. However, results underneath this attracted the most criticism from bands people. Most thought that the Kalgoorlie Band should have been awarded higher than they were - they weren't even awarded a place. The only prize Broken Hill was awarded was 3rd place in Discipline behind Eaglehawk & Bairnsdale. Broken Hill wrote Kalgoorlie a letter of sympathy which read out to the gathered Kalgoorlie bands people when they returned from Ballarat. The letter basically said that Kalgoorlie was an extremely fine band and that any bands person could see they should have been awarded much higher. This possibly provides a clue to the photo, but we may never know for sure. It's the little stories like this that provide a richness to our own band history, and if anyone would like more information on the 1906 competition I can direct them to other resources.

05.01.2022 Don’t forget to come to Maldon Carols tomorrow night (Saturday 21st) commencing at 7pm! Featuring the Maldon Brass Band and local artists, and maybe even a visit from Santa, this promises to be bigger and better than last years carols, so don’t miss out! Bring your picnic rug (the weather is going to be pleasant) and head down to the Maldon shire gardens at the rotunda, corner High St and Fountain St

04.01.2022 I have taken the liberty of copying this from a brass teacher's post today ... ....." been discussing with my students measures for prevention of COVID-19 specifically as they relate to brass players. A student mentioned that you should maybe clean your horn. It seems to me nearly impossible to get COVID-19 from playing your horn/instrument, no matter how dirty it is (although you should clean your instrument regularly so you don't give yourself recurring illnesses, like sin...us infections). BUT: we should probably all do our due diligence and not let others play our instruments for the next several weeks. That is a sure fire way to transmit COVID-19 if you're a carrier. Also, make sure you wash your hands before touching any instrument, including your own. Not sure about wiping down instruments with alcohol wipes - what that does to the lacquer, etc. Maybe someone who knows the answer can add some advice below? Any other practical advice with regard to COVID-19 and tuba / euph/brass playing , especially from medical professionals, please post below! Someone made an important point that any wipes used should have an alcohol concentration of 60% or higher. Allow your hands to dry for 20 seconds after applying!"

04.01.2022 Good Evening to all Maldon Brass Band supporters. We hope you are all keeping well and safe during this time. We all miss performing so much, but we’re very much looking forward to the day we can play a few numbers for you! Please take care of yourselves and each other. We will see you soon.

04.01.2022 One of our most important annual events is to visit the Maldon Hospital and play Christmas music for the residents and we had a great time this afternoon playing outside for a big crowd assembled! We hope the residents enjoyed the bit of Christmas joy we could share with them.

01.01.2022 What a great day out at the Maldon Show today! We enjoyed playing this morning - and were able to wear our new red polos for the first time! Thanks to sponsor Rinaldi's Fashions.! Plus a shout out to Sovereigns Embroidery for their great work.

01.01.2022 Perhaps a timely piece for today’s repertoire...
