23.01.2022 Sometimes we look at a tree and think yep just a tree. But its so much more than just a tree, it is a home to many, many animals. Have a look at all the animals that live in this tree. Note this tree is in Canberra but our River Red Gum and Black Box trees are doing the same thing, being homes to birds, lizards, microbats, possums and insects.... And not forgetting just how much fresh oxygen these trees provide! Photo credit: Alice McGlashan

23.01.2022 Teams have been out on the River Murray below Mildura, catching and tagging native fish to monitor their movement through fishways. Free movement is essential f...or the life-cycle of native fish, and with this monitoring program were helping improve future water planning and river operations. Tags similar to the microchips used in dogs and cats were given to 571 native fish, ranging in size from 120mm to the 1.35m Murray cod pictured below (we needed the big tape measure for this giant!). External tags are also used to make these fish easy to identify. Once tagged, the fish are returned to the water. If you catch a fish with a visible tag, please record the details, take a pic and put it back. Phone the number printed on the tag with the details. 21.01.2022 LIVING WITH MICROBATS! Often bats are portrayed in a bad light, through movies and the media. However, this depiction is misguided. Microbats are very small animals; the largest species only grow to a body length of approximately 11cm. They will keep to themselves in their roosts, some will stay still if approached, while others will try to crawl or fly away from you. They will not try to fly into your hair! Any disturbance of their roosts should be avoided. These bats eat... insects, and they will not suck your blood. Australia does not have any species of vampire bats. If you have microbats consider yourself lucky, as this is a good indication you are living in a healthy environment. If you want to help them, make sure not to use pesticides in your backyard (this destroys their food insects), don’t chop down old trees (they make great roosting sites) and keep cats indoors or locked up at night, while cats are cute, they are extremely good hunters and microbats are an easy target. #microbats #mallee #nature

17.01.2022 One of our camera traps caught the exact moment this female Malleefowl laid an egg. This will be one of the many eggs laid during the breeding season. The e...ggs are laid at intervals of a few days, and, since there is a very large number, three or four months pass before all eggs are produced. As each egg is placed in the warm nest it begins to incubate; long before the last egg is laid the first eggs have hatched and the chicks have run away to begin their solitary life. 12.01.2022 BLACKWATER THE GOOD, BAD AND THE UGLY! Does providing water for the environment create blackwater? Sometimes. The amount of leaf litter (like leaves, bark and branches fallen from floodplain trees) on the floodplain or in a wetland is important. When water is added, vegetation starts to degrade and this releases tannin. The more leaf litter on the floodplain, the more tannin can be leached out. Here, the perfect comparison is a tea bag. When you place the tea bag in wat...er the dark cloud that forms are the tannin which leaches out of the leaves as they break down. The more teabags you add to the water the more tannin comes out and the darker the water gets. On the floodplain, the leaching of the tannins into the water gives it the dark colour, hence the name ‘blackwater’. The other process which occurs during the same time is the leaf litter being broken down by tiny microorganisims. Specifically, they are feeding on the carbon which is the key component of all living matter. Generally, this is not a visible process (like when the tannins are leached into the surrounding water). This process is extremely beneficial to the aquatic environment and leads to high productivity which pushes the food web into hyperdrive. During the breakdown of the carbon, the microorganism use oxygen from the water. If the amount of leaf litter is small then there are fewer microorganisms using only a modest amount of oxygen and oxygen levels in the water can be maintained. Trouble occurs when there is lots of leaf litter. The number of microorganisms grows exponentially and they use more oxygen from the water than can be replaced. This is what causes hypoxic water (or water with no oxygen). Keep an eye out for regular Blackwater posts over the coming weeks, as we will explain several facts around Blackwater. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and we’d be happy to answer them for you. #murrayriver #environment #blackwater #mallee

10.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK Celebrating Indigenous Artist NAIDOC week is celebrated not just in the Indigenous communities but also in increasing numbers of government agencies, schools, local councils and workplaces. To help celebrate NAIDOC week, Mallee CMA would like to acknowledge local Indigenous Artist Veronica (Ronnie) Harradine with her artwork Gathering of Knowledge, which is proudly displayed in the Mallee CMA building.... Below is the story relating to the artwork. ____________________________ Gathering of Knowledge This artwork symbolises the coming together of two cultures for the protection of Country and to preserve Aboriginal sites, lands, waterways, flora and fauna. Respect and acknowledgement of the expertise which comes from both Indigenous cultural practices and western knowledge are represented. One stems from thousands of years caring for Country and the other is based on western scientific practice. Both look at the same landscape, but see it through different eyes. Understanding and appreciation for each other's cultural views and knowledge will ensure the Country is valued, sustained and maintained for future generations. The artwork is a Murray River landscape, used and enjoyed for the cultural practices and recreation. I have placed a Coolamon floating above the landscape and inside is an Aboriginal message stick and book. The pages of the book are bleached and the words are faded with missing lines. For this book to be strong and complete, it must include the knowledge of both cultures. This artwork celebrates the importance of healing, preserving and caring for Country, to maintain cultural knowledge. The Coolamon, an, Aboriginal gathering tool, ultimately sustains life, hence the title of the painting, Gathering of Knowledge. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek #mallee #Indigenousartwork
