25.01.2022 This year many people have faced difficulties in their life, some for the first time, and we've seen an increase in people needing support. To have so many businesses sign up to our 2020 Christmas Appeal, in response to this, has been incredible. We've repeatedly heard comments like, "Every child deserves to receive something special on Christmas morning." Some businesses wanted their donations to remain anonymous but we would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their involvement. You have made a difference. #ChristmasAppeal #thankyou

23.01.2022 We are not Melbourne. Our weather is not like Melbourne’s. Public housing policy must change to reflect the conditions we experience. For the last seven years, Mallee Family Care has relentlessly advocated for the installation of cooling in public housing in Mildura. Research we conducted in partnership with the University of Sydney clearly demonstrates the negative impact the lack of cooling in Mildura’s public housing has on its residents and on the broader community. Ahead... of the 2020-21 State Budget, Mallee Family Care wrote a submission to the Victorian Government, calling for the installation of cooling in all public housing in northwest Victoria as a matter of urgency, and we also emphasised the need for immediate and ongoing investment in social housing. You can read our submission here: https://www.malleefamilycare.org.au//State-Budget-2020-202 See more

22.01.2022 Mallee Family Care would like to welcome Dr. Hariprakash (Dr. Hari) and Cyndi Power to our board. Dr. Hari is a highly regarded Paediatrician who has worked in Mildura since 2011 and is passionate about delivering the best health and wellbeing outcomes for children. Cyndi Power is a strong advocate for children and families and has spent many years nurturing the mental and physical health of local parents and young people. Together they will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to our Agency and we look forward to seeing the benefit their contribution will bring to the communities we support.

21.01.2022 Mallee Family Care sends its best wishes to all the communities of northwest Victoria. Stay safe and look out for each other.

21.01.2022 Unfortunately we are currently experiencing technical difficulties, impacting both our phone and computer systems, meaning we can’t make or receive calls and emails. We are working to fix the issue as soon as we can.

20.01.2022 The strength of those who stood up against unlawful Robodebts has been vindicated with the $1.2 billion out of court settlement secured on Monday. We have seen the harm Robodebt has caused some of the more vulnerable people in our community and whilst we welcome yesterday's outcome, that will see over 400,000 people compensated and the write-off of almost $400 million in invalid debts, we continue to call on the Government to work with experts in social security and impacted community members, to find a fair debt recovery system, going forward.

20.01.2022 This year, with many families in Mildura facing challenges, SuniTAFE, Sunraysia Institute Of TAFE staff backed our Christmas Appeal and embraced the spirit of giving. They know that a community is stronger when it unites in support of those who need it. #ChristmasAppeal #grateful #communityspirit #malleekidsmatter

18.01.2022 Christmas can be a difficult time of year for many people. It's ok not to be ok. It's ok to need help. If you, or someone you know, is struggling please reach out. #thenumbersyouneed

18.01.2022 As you plan your New Year's resolutions, Tracey's story is one you need to hear. "Foster Care is life changing for the children you welcome into your home but it's life changing for you as well."

17.01.2022 Today marks the beginning of NAIDOC Week, with the theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ recognising that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. They have a spiritual and cultural connection to this country and are the keepers of the oldest oral stories in the world. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were this country’s first artists, inventors, scientists, farmers, navigators, explorers and astronomers. Mallee Family Care respects and celebrates their enduring culture and the history that ties them to this land.

15.01.2022 Each year at our local Australia Day Award ceremonies, we are reminded of the generosity, determination, innovation and spirit that underpins towns across the Mallee. Arlie Atkinson is a shining example of this - at just 17 and still studying year 12, she saw the impact that the Mallee Family Care Chances for Children program has on young people and decided she wanted to help. Juggling her studies, Arlie organised the Swan Hill 24 Hour Swim-a-thon, to raise money for Chances for Children. This week, Arlie's contribution was recognised, with the Swim-a-thon being awarded Swan Hill Community Event of the Year. We warmly congratulate Arlie on the Award - we often say that Mallee people matter, and they do, but it's also true to say that Mallee people make a difference. #awards #communityevent #communityspirit

15.01.2022 Mallee Family Care commends the Victorian Parliament for last night passing the Conversion Practices Bill which outlaws gay conversion therapy in our state. The reforms, which were overwhelmingly supported after twelve hours of debate, send a powerful and much needed message to Victoria’s LGBTIQA community, that they are valued and respected for who they are.

14.01.2022 Mallee Family Care welcomes yesterday’s announcement by Dan Andrews and his Government, which recognises the importance of safe and affordable housing for all Victorians. The announcement constitutes the largest investment in public and community housing in Australia’s history. Across the state there are thousands of people who have nowhere stable to call home and this investment will, for them, be life changing. Delivered through the 2020/21 State Budget, we will see: **$5.3... billion in the Big Housing Build to construct more than 12,000 environmentally sustainable new homes **25% of the funding will be allocated to regional Victoria **The package will boost our social housing supply by 10% in four years **It will support up to 18,000 jobs and generate $6.7 billion in the state’s economic activity We have long argued that the only way to end homelessness is with homes and we commend the Andrews’ Government for taking the first steps in providing meaningful investment in a solution. #everybodydeservesahome #socialhousing #publichousing #malleepeoplematter See more

08.01.2022 At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them Lest we forget.

07.01.2022 COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on employment in our region. Right now there is ONE job advertised for every FIFTEEN people on JobSeeker and if you include people not on JobSeeker, also looking for work, this ratio is even more dire. People are hurting and now is not the time to cut safety nets. This week we have written to the Federal Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, Anne Webster - Federal Member for Mallee and Senator Anne Ruston, the Minister for Families and Social Services, asking them to permanently raise the rate of JobSeeker to ensure a minimum income of $500 per week. Mallee people matter and we won't deliver better outcomes for our community by forcing people further into poverty. #RaisetheRateforGood

07.01.2022 WE DID IT! After seven years of lobbying, advocacy and research, today we received formal notification from Richard Wynne MP and the Victorian Government that air conditioning will be installed in existing and future public housing in northwest Victoria. This is a significant outcome for our regional communities; it acknowledges the circumstances specific to the Mallee and validates the voices of the people who've bravely shared their stories, in the hope of achieving change. To everyone who has supported our Agency over the last seven years, we thank you. To everyone for whom this announcement will be lifechanging, we say your health and wellbeing are valued. You matter. You have been heard. You can read our response in full here> https://www.malleefamilycare.org.au/New/Media-Releases.aspx

05.01.2022 The Bendigo Bank Mildura Branch prides itself on its connections to community and every year, their staff show us how it's done - generously donating to our Christmas Appeal and in doing so, ensuring there are big smiles on little faces on Christmas morning. #communityspirit #thegiftofgiving #mildura #thankyou

04.01.2022 As the State Government continues to make its Budget announcements, Mallee Family Care reaffirms that in regards to the installation of cooling in public housing in northwest Victoria, our position and ask, of the State Government remains unchanged that funding be provided for this project as an urgent priority. Early indications are that our Government has finally listened to our community’s voices and to our advocacy and we are hopeful that our most disadvantaged and vul...nerable residents will be told, through the 2020-21 State Budget that their health, mental wellbeing, education, safety and future are valued and are worth investing in. Mallee Family Care has been campaigning for cooling in public housing in our region since 2013 and over the ensuing 7 years our research clearly identifies the impact of extreme heat on public housing tenants in our region. Prolonged heatwaves have a detrimental effect both on public housing tenants who have no respite and on the broader community. We look forward to further announcements by the Andrews’ Government, extending their notable investment in social infrastructure to ensure public housing in Mildura is habitable and safe for all its tenants.

02.01.2022 Today we received a wonderful reminder of what Christmas is all about, thanks to 11 year old Holly. Using her own money, Holly purchased food, household items and craft activities and donated them to families being supported by Mallee Family Care. With a heart as big as her smile, Holly said she just wanted to help someone and when asked what she'd like to do when she is older, her answer was immediate: "I want to care for kids, like my mum does." What a future we have ahead of us, with children like Holly leading the way. Merry Christmas. #thegiftofgiving
