22.01.2022 "We are remembering how to be an ecosystem"

22.01.2022 Whenever you're offered a medical test, take a moment to consider what will happen with the information gained from it. Is this something you're happy with? ... Could a particular result limit your options in any way? (If a screening test shows that you are carrying group B strep bacteria, have gestational diabetes or have a higher-than-average BMI, for instance, you might be told that you can't birth where you wanted to.) What are the alternatives? (There are always alternatives, including declining the test.) Always remember it's your decision. You can say 'yes' or 'no' or 'I need time to think about this.' If you'd like to know more, or to better understand some of the wider issues around making decisions in pregnancy and childbirth, take a look at my book, "What's Right For Me?" It's written to help women, parents and families to better understand how modern maternity care works and how you can make the decisions that are right for you. 22.01.2022 A big part of treatment for children with anxiety, explains Dr. Laura Kirmayer, a clinical psychologist, is actually teaching parents stress tolerance. It’s a simultaneous processit’s both directing the parent’s anxiety, and then how they also support and scaffold the child’s development of stress tolerance. <3 It's all about taking small and conscious steps and you and your child will be happier and more resilient humans. I know, because this is my story too xx Nina <3

19.01.2022 "Having a baby is hard enough. No woman should be asked to do anything else while she is having a baby. She shouldn't have to renegotiate a birth plan, argue with her care providers about the evidence supporting her decisions, or advocate for her baby.... She also shouldn't have to comfort her husband or reassure her mother or educate her sister. Everyone around the birthing mother should attend her like the queen she is." --Elizabeth Allemann, MD photo credit Xuan Nguyen @darthxuan . #mamashanti #breatheforbirth #activebirth #birthpreparation #yogaforpregnancyandbirth #prenatalyoga #childbirth #naturalchildbirth #pelvicfloor #pelvicfloorrx #pelvicfloorfunction #eudaemonia #polyvagaltheory #polyvagalpregnancy #polyvagalbirth

14.01.2022 Sharing @natalielennard beautiful post celebrating the potency of practical intimacy in childbirth I cannot count how many times I’ve observed women experiencing relaxation of the cervical sphincter that correlated with positive and loving words spoken during the most intense phase of labour. Picture from my recreation of a 1970s Ina May birth last week. My favourite Farm stories have always been those that show the mind and body connection. How the cervix of a labour...ing woman dilates - or even retracts - according to the energy of those around her. Energy is everything from common decency - doctors knowing to knock and wait - to a woman being comfortable enough to discharge unconscious emotions by speaking out loud, through to full-on tactile eroticism with her partner. As a midwife Ina May’s role wasn’t always physical, but helping women whose labours had stalled, through words and cues. In Guide to Childbirth, she tells of a woman who was a singer and panicked during labour. She suggested she sing, which fast moved her baby down to crowning. She tells of Pamela who confessed she needed to redo her wedding vows to include lifelong commitment, which restarted labour. Another woman whose husband whispered you’re marvellous, she turned into a chant that accelerated her dilation. Ina May declared she never forgot these births. They served as vivid bookmarks to embellish a skillset beyond pinards and stethoscope. Ina May would often get a ‘tingling feeling’ whenever something like this happened, as if involved a mysterious mutual communication. That is why a midwife is more than physical skill, but having willingness to energetically connect. There’s so much we're yet to understand about our own mind/body connection, let alone how our bodies communicate with each other. The presence of even one person who is not exquisitely attuned to the mother’s feelings can stop labour. It’s interesting to reflect on one's own births. Could there have been a mental block? Was there good or bad energy from someone present? How might you do it differently next time? #TheFarmBirthUndisturbed #practicalintimacy #yogaforwomen #yogaforbirth #mamashanti

11.01.2022 Many of you know I've been here and this is a subject very close to my heart <3 Extract from this article and I am in FULL agreement - "You might have noticed that yoga is absent from the list. While many ectomorphs still worship at the altar of yoga, yoga is not an antidote to burnout. Why? It does nothing to address the root causes of overwork and hyper-vigilance. But don’t just take my word for it.... Jennifer Boss shared this in a Harvard Business Review article, ‘We tend to think of burnout as an individual problem, solvable by learning to say no, more yoga, better breathing techniques, practicing resilience the self-help list goes on. But evidence is mounting that applying personal, band-aid solutions to an epic and rapidly evolving workplace phenomenon may be harming, not helping, the battle.’" But do keep breathing <3

04.01.2022 Did you know that the greatest impact on your birth outcomes is based on a decision that we usually make in those first exciting twelve weeks of pregnancy, and ...that is the provider that we pick for our care? Picking who is going to help us navigate this exciting and life changing journey (and it doesn't have to be your first pregnancy to be life changing) is a personal decision but one that needs a lot of thought and fact finding. The main two options are: Obstetric care: where you will be under the care of an obstetrician and in the majority of the time are seen in the private setting. Midwifery care: under the care of a midwife but how this looks can vary. This can include a known midwife, where a midwife is allocated to you for your whole pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum period. This can occur through you hiring a private midwife, birthing at a birth centre or birthing with a midwifery group practice at the public hospital. Birthing at your local public hospital and you may see a number of different midwives throughout your prenatal, birth and postpartum care. What type of care you pick will depend on your views of pregnancy, birth and what you feel comfortable with and everyone will make different choices. Katie Allen Lamaze Childbirth Educator

03.01.2022 oh yes It's taken me decades to own my way of femininity Not willowy and wispy (what I was hoping for as a young adolescent begining to sprout) Not plush, voluptuous and emulating the ancient goddess images Hirsute, angular, wiry, tom-boyish and restless. It took years of self compassion, to round-off, soften my edges and sooth my angry inherited androgynous hormones; to find me.... Somewhere in between Somewhere that's just right Perfectly feminine Perfectly at peace with my may of femininity <3 See more

03.01.2022 During pregnancy, most of us feel at our most expansive and receptive to new ways of facilitating well-being. Skills learned to support birthing based in conscious integration of movement and breath, will be of service to you through out your parenting and every day of your blessed existence Taking a deep diaphragmatic inhalation through your nose, followed by an extended exhalation, stimulates your vagus nerve, boosts the resilence of your parasympathetic nervous system a...nd creates an inner sense of calm. The Polyvagal theory, as developed by Stephen Porges, identifies the most recently evolved part of our vagus nerve can be thought of as our social engagement system. It’s that part of the nervous system that unites body and mind allowing us to feel connected to others and loving towards ourselves. When optimized, the social engagement system, helps us to be engaged in life in an empathic, open-hearted, and kind manner. Breath plays a key role in our health because the vagus nerve extends into the smooth muscle of the lungs and heart. Activation of your vagus nerve keeps your immune system in check and releases an assortment of hormones and neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine and oxytocin; reducing inflammation and allergies, bringing relief from tension headaches, improving memory, and cultivating feelings of relaxation. Theses practices give to emotional and energetic latitude - the capacity to pause and consider response rather than thought-less reactivity. So empowering as a new parent. Intrinsic to my teaching is the intentional integration of breath and rhythmic movement to stimulate and balance the vagus nerve. #mamashanti #breatheforbirth #activebirth #birthpreparation #yogaforpregnancyandbirth #prenatalyoga #childbirth #naturalchildbirth #pelvicfloor #pelvicfloorrx #pelvicfloorfunction #eudaemonia #polyvagaltheory #polyvagalpregnancy #polyvagalbirth
