24.01.2022 - One extremely important element of a businesses culture is its values. Many people don't understand how important values are within a culture. It essentially drives everything that you do as a small business owner and really, your values are your business’s values. So it's important that you understand what your values are.... There should be around five values, and they can include areas such as; focus, the environment, profit, community. Whatever your business’s values are, you need to identify them and be very clear in your mind how you will achieve them. Those five values determine everything that your business does. You must ensure that your staff follow and believe in your values, and the decisions you make for the business are based on them. 24.01.2022 - One of the most effective ways of increasing your company or your business's value is simply to know what it is you're delivering. By that I mean if you sell cars, it's not selling cars, if you are a tax accountant, it's not providing tax advice. It's knowing what your customers or your clients are buying from you.... For example, as an accountant, people don't just want their tax done. They want assurance that they are compliant with tax law. They want to know exactly what it is that they should be paying or receiving back from the ATO. If you sell high-quality cars or high-quality furniture or cheap clothing, understand what people really want from those things, because once you understand what it is that they actually want, then you tailor everything around that you deliver the package to them. If you simply think you sell clothes or sell shoes or sell cars, you'll miss the point and your marketing will always be off track. If you get it right and you understand exactly what it is, what your purpose is in business, you'll be far more effective and you will increase company value. 24.01.2022 - One of the ways to increase company value is to focus on how your business presents itself. This is especially important if you intend to either sell your business or to get investors in. By ‘how your business presents itself’ I mean, that it has clear systems and processes in place, and it is consistent in its appearance from uniforms to policies.... You want to be able to promote a business that you (or prospective buyers/investors) can walk in on a Monday morning, turn the ‘engine on’ and see it make money all the way through to Friday afternoon. One of the reasons that franchises can be quite successful in selling themselves is because all those things are done. Everything is in place. Someone buys in and everything is ready to go. If you intend to increase the value of your business to either get investors in or to sell it, make sure presents well, make sure everything is done. 16.01.2022 - I want to talk briefly about staff turnover or employee turnover. The three major costs in any business are marketing, rent, and wages. So the selection of a potential employee is very important, as is the maintenance of that employee so that they help you grow your business.... If your employee turnover rate is very high, there's a lot of hidden costs associated with that. There are recruitment costs, training costs, and the building of a culture. It is important that you recruit the most appropriate person for your business, you pay them accordingly and that you look after that person to help them grow. Everyone wants to be part of a team but to have a strong team, you need strong camaraderie.... Part of that is you building that camaraderie within your organization. Making sure your staff all feel like they are part of the one team, heading in the one same direction. If they don't, what often happens is: they don't stay very long they don't really work towards the end goals or the purpose and values of the organization So it's important, as a business owner, that you learn how to build camaraderie. I should note that it's not just having barbecues or Friday afternoon drinks. It’s having your staff truly believe they're part of the team, part of the organization, and part of the success. 09.01.2022 - Something I see a lot in business is people spending a great amount of time talking about opportunities they could take and listening to other people with ideas as to how they could grow their business. At the end of the day, you have to take action yourself. If you've decided to start a business, tell everyone you're starting a business, go and register the business name. If you decided to lease a warehouse, then go and lease a wareho...use. Now, in all of these situations, you need to make sure they are financially sound without a doubt. So part of the process is making sure it is and that it will make you money. But once you've decided those things, stop procrastinating. Just do it, because every time you waste time is another day you've lost and eventually you just won't do it. So take action, take action today. Get things done. Have your business moving forward. If you do that and if you've done the planning correctly, you'll make money. You'll be successful.

07.01.2022 - One skill that makes business owners successful over the long term is discipline. But more importantly, self-discipline. There is a lot of things on the web you can read on how to be successful in business. There's a lot of videos that you can watch etc. What it boils right down to though is your ability to enact those things.... And that comes from self-discipline. Noone will be successful in business in the long term without discipline. There are always examples of people that appear to have made their money overnight. And some of those are true. But what you will find is that those people that are just lucky in business won't stay in business very long. It comes internally. It comes from your self-discipline. You can't get it from anyone else. You must motivate yourself, you must have your own internal self-discipline to do the things that need to be done. Day in, day out. It's that sort of attitude. It's that sort of self-discipline that will make you successful in the long run, because without it you won't be successful. You need self-discipline. Look inside yourself for it.

Trust doesn't mean that they don't need supervision. You always need to supervise the team that works for you, that's part of being a business leader. But you will not grow your business without a degree of trust in your staff to do their job properly. So trust your staff, make sure they're trained properly and that you have recruited the right sort of people. 03.01.2022 - I was in a meeting just recently, and one of the things that came out of it was that this company, even though its sales were very strong, it was at best breaking even. And the owner of the business couldn't work out why. ... Quite simply, it came down to his production inefficiencies. Nothing was organized; there were no systems in place; their ordering was excessive. Their utilization of resources was very poor, and as a result, their costs were extremely high and they couldn't get on top of it. The only way that business or any business can be successful is if production costs are efficient. Your job as a business leader is to ensure that every part of your business is running efficiently, not just sales, not just financial control, not just your staff management, but every part because you will bleed to death slowly.
