25.01.2022 A new Ransomware "Petya" has spread through Europe and North America and it should hit our shores today. A few tips: 1. Make sure you have an offline ( disconne...cted from the computer) backup. 2. Update your computer, your antivirus etc 3. Dont open any attachments in emails. 4. If your computer gets infected, the Ransomware only activates after a reboot -so don't reboot. For the more technical: 1. create a file in c:\Windows called "perfc" - c:\Windows\perfc.dat - and the Petya won't run. ( Hat Tip Amit Serper from Cybereason)

24.01.2022 If you’ve got an ING card, read this! The other day, ING sent me a mass-marketing email with the subject line: Scott, refer a friend and you can both get $100.... Now, given that my book recommends setting up a couple of ING accounts ... And given that my book has sold over 500,000 copies ... And given that ING has just announced they’ve achieved a record 50% jump in customers this year ... why the hell am I even writing to you? Why aren’t I sipping a Bacardi in the Bahamas? Oh that’s right -- old dumbo here doesn’t accept any kickbacks. To be serious for a second: I have no allegiance of any kind to ING. My only allegiance is to my readers, and I only recommended those ING accounts because they have zero account fees and zero ATM fees, and they pay a (relatively) high rate of interest. Why am I telling you all this? Because I feel a responsibility to keep these bastards honest. And this week ING announced some changes to the accounts. So I feel it’s appropriate to check them out: First, they’re now offering zero ATM fees globally (speaking of the Bahamas). Coupled with the fact that ING already offers the wholesale exchange rate from Visa without a clip -- which is why I’ve found I get a better rate than with cards from other banks. Second, and more importantly, they’ve also eliminated international transaction fees on all overseas purchases -- a saving of 2 per cent. Big news if you buy online (which somebody in my house seems to do quite regularly). The fine print is that you need to deposit $1,000 a month into your account and make five transactions -- in other words, make it your everyday account. And why wouldn’t you? It’s an all-in-one ripper: good for everyday banking, good for buying crap online, and good for holidays overseas. Just be warned: do not take their upsell on their sleazy new credit card after all, that’s what’s cross-subsidising all this fee-free generosity! Tread Your Own Path!

16.01.2022 AMAZON is without doubt extreme capitalism. Just as I predicted that the German Aldi would make a fortune in Australia by reducing the number of people employe...d that is, tossing Aussies out of work and then sending their huge profits back to Germany the same will happen with Amazon. Amazon will result in tens of thousands of Australians losing their jobs, as Amazon are the most astute, extreme retailers in the world. Their products are good quality so how do they sell cheaper? Yes, you’ve got it, they have less staff overheads. I love the way all the journalists keep talking about how the big retailers will fare. That is, will Gerry Harvey be OK? Yes, will of course he will be, he is already a billionaire, but what is never spoken about is all of the Aussie workers who will clearly lose their jobs. Yes, we will all be able to buy our products cheaper, and food through Amazon will be even cheaper again. We already have an obesity problem, and of course once you reduce the cost of a product, more people buy it. I can see obesity and diabetes getting worse and worse as the food prices get lower and lower. It looks to me as if we have gone past the sweet point with our free enterprise system as greed takes over. The man who started Amazon is allegedly worth AUD $100 billion. Yes, not $100 million, but $100 billion. In fact, it is claimed that the six wealthiest people on earth (I think they are all Americans) have the same total worth as the bottom 4.5 billion people in this world. How can these billionaires be so utterly selfish and not share let’s say, 70% or 80% of their money, so they still have vast amounts left to do everything they would ever want to do. Yes, the human condition is indeed strange. I wonder if these people have ever heard of the Russian Revolution, or the pitchforks coming out in France in the late 1700s. Will Amazon ‘front load’ in Australia by losing money to get established while wiping out Australian competition? See the article in The Australian this morning Amazon the moment of truth for local players. I particularly noted the quote, Throughout its history, Amazon has prioritised growth over earnings and has been prepared to sell products below cost to drive sales growth and market dominance. There isn’t a major retailer in this country that could adopt that as a sustainable strategy. Later on, the article says, It isn’t just bricks and mortar retailers that have been destabilised by Amazon. Second tier malls are also in strife as their tenants are crushed by the juggernaut. Of course they mention the tenants, not the real humans who are all going to lose their jobs. A little later it says, A quarter of all US malls will disappear within the next half decade or so as the growth of the online retailing continues. Once again, they don’t mention that with that are tens of thousands of jobs. Yes, really valuable human beings mums and dads, sons and daughters, who will probably never have a proper job in the USA because of this ultimate greed extreme capitalism. www.theaustralian.com.au//news-story/14ed49c49fe597f9124b8
