25.01.2022 I would like to see this situation change. The coastal areas should be in high rainfall areas, but the rain has stayed away. We had to bring our cattle back from agistment on what had once been prime dairy farming land on the coast because they had less rain than we had. I think we need to accept this new reality and support all farmers who are affected by drought.

25.01.2022 Great to turn the dexters into a fresh paddock!

24.01.2022 I have not been on the ball and have missed an opportunity. Look on the DCAI site and there was a virtual Show called COVID-19 2020 Show, or something similar. But entries had to be in by 5 PM on he 8/4/20 - still today as it is still11:56 here. We do have some delightful girls, and just bought a new bull on Monday! Bugger!

24.01.2022 Has anyone else got some cute photos to show. This is Rocky Ned with his mum. Though he will sneak a drink from anyone of the mothers, if they let him.

24.01.2022 Pleasant Tree Farm Dexters enjoying the winter sun...shame about the fireweed..must get onto slashing that right away!

23.01.2022 Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the fires. It seems many in the Dexter Community have been affected, especially in the Victorian fires. We hope that everyone is safe, and been able to save their stock.

23.01.2022 I would encourage every member to put their nomination in to attend the DCAI AGM. You do need to contact LBC and let them know by 2 PM this Friday, the 6th of November, that you wish to be involved. Everyone is being affected by the new and changing conditions that this COVID world is challenging us with, which is why this year it will be a teleconference, which is not ideal, but means that there is an opportunity to participate without travelling, and get to see something of the workings of our Council behind the scenes. The AGM will be on the 14th of November, at 2 PM.

23.01.2022 Don't forget our meeting on Sunday. It is our very important AGM to be followed by a general meeting, and we would love to see you come on board, at 6 PM. Yes it is a Zoom meeting and we have allowed plenty of time to get all the tasks done before you come in and spend an hour getting through the business, without having to jump in the car and drive a few hours to get there. It may be the way of the future at the rate things are going in Victoria and now NSW. Looking forward to our catch up. Any agenda items can be put forward by ringing our secretary Ron Brown on 0427261313.

22.01.2022 We did it! Our Zoom Meeting last Sunday was up and running without any hitches at 6 PM on the dot, as planned. The AGM moved swiftly through the formalities and election of Office bearers. And we were onto General business by 6:15 PM. An hour later all done and dusted. Being a Zoom meeting it is now a simple matter of going through the audio recording to document everything. So pleased it went as well as it did. it would be wonderful for a few new members to come on board, ...as we are a very small group. We now have a second admin person for the Facebook page, so Lisa, who also does other interesting things apart from Dexters, and can tell you a story or two about how close the fires came to their neck of the woods, early this year. I am sure there will be more than one or two interesting stories to share with us. We will also work on getting our web page up to date, and full of interesting photos, and stories on each of the studs. I must admit it was a miserable old day here so it was very nice that no one had to drive hours to get to a meeting and then home again. But we are organising our next meeting in October to be a Field Day at Peter Dixons place. He is doing very interesting work in the Regenerative Farming area, and is extremely knowledgeable on best management practises. We all learnt something new during our Zoom meeting. See more

22.01.2022 A very thoughtful gesture by Local land services in areas near some of us. An excellent opportunity to meet neighbours, and share your stories, as well as maybe win a hamper for Xmas. Sounds good to me.

22.01.2022 I am sure things will move forward in a smooth fashion, with DCAI announcing the New Council, so now we can focus on other issues facing us, in our ever increasing warming world. I hope most of you got some of the rain that passed through a lot of places crying out for rain, such as Bourke. At Glendon Brook we managed all of 11 mms, but enough to make a small difference. In Octobers "The Farmer" I was shocked to read that we need to be very aware of the health risks related... to using warm water, to hose ourselves down on a hot day. On page 88, the headline is "Water can be deadly". As I read Jane Lieschkes reporting on CWAs involvement in bringing greater awareness to the community, of a little known bug, an omoeba called "Naegleria fowleri." which can infect humans with fatal consequences, I was concerned and thought it was worth sharing. The information was sourced from NSW Health, and World Health Organisation. The CWA take on various Healthcare issues, such as encouraging people to be vaccinated against Q fever, and also making grants available for important research. They are now turning their attention to this little known micro organism found in fresh warm water, needing temperatures over 25 degrees Centigrade to flourish. You dont catch it from drinking contaminated water, or cooking with it. Even swimming in it, is relatively safe. But what can happen is it can find a foothold in the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity, and then it can travel to the olefactory nerves to the brain, where it destroys brain tissue. it is usually fatal within 5 days. And it is found here in Australia, and it has caused at least 25 deaths in Australia, and 300 worldwide since its discovery in the 1960s. It is known as amoebic meningoencephalitis. Children are particularly at risk, pets can also be infected. It does not spread from person to person. It cannot survive in cool clean or adequately chlorinated water. While this report states that cases are rare, we need to be more aware as our weather conditions are changing to longer hotter periods. We need to know about the potential dangers that could be lurking in our untreated bodies of water, such as dams, and innocent looking hoses. We need to educate our children on the importance of not squirting water on their faces or up their noses, and ensuring collapsible wading pools are emptied and dried in the sun after use. They also advise keeping heads above water in spas, thermal pools, and bodies of fresh warm water, and ensuring pools are adequately chlorinated. Worth a read if you get this magazine.A great article on Organic seed growing just one of the many well researched articles. See more

22.01.2022 More food for thought. Were you aware of this?

22.01.2022 On Sunday, Members and Guests drove to Peter Dixon and Megan Kessler place for one of the best meetings we have had. It was full of joy, getting together for the first time, face to face in over a year. Peter gave us a tour of their top Orchard, between a break in the weather. This orchard is a tribute to the hard work that has gone into it over the years. it is full of exotic, and unusual fruit trees. They also have an Orchard suitable for cooler climate trees a little lower down on their property. Such a delightful day, with Peter the amazing wizard of Information regarding all the trees that he and Megan have introduced over the years they have owned their beautiful property.

21.01.2022 Some good advice here!

21.01.2022 I was hoping to just copy the link to this but it wouldnt let me. But please look them up as they have some great ideas. Worth the read, and more! CLIMATE SMART AGRICULTURE: GETTING STARTED Australian farmers are on the frontlines of climate change, with more frequent and extreme weather events. Floods, fires, heat waves and droughts are becoming par for the course....Continue reading

21.01.2022 I was looking previously at the NSW alerts, where nothing came up but this danger is very real and happening now. It is shown clearly on the Emergency Victorian Government site. We pray that everyone is safe. Margaret Weir has posted on the Dexter Enthusiasts Australia page. Very challenging times in Bendoc.

18.01.2022 Here is Samson checking out our efforts of Xmas cheer. I dont think he was much impressed!

18.01.2022 I was hoping for some really good news stories to pass on to you. I know there has been rain about, and i am hoping you are getting some of it. So far nothing but the lightest of drizzles here. But the news out of Victoria is not good. i am sure we will hear more about the plight of our Dexter breeders down there. But I know there have been some heavy losses, of stock and homes. So any of our problems may be small in comparison. I am sure many of you are in the same predicament as us. No rain, no water and no feed. So we are having to reduce our stock, and that will be happening this weekend for us. Last chance for anyone wanting a lovely young Registered 3 year old Dexter bull. He is black but carries red. Must have an electric fence as he likes the girls, and is agile.

16.01.2022 Now this is interesting. I dont know of anyone who would like to do this course, but just thought if anyone was interested they can put it in their next year diaries. A great way to get young folk with an interest / love of cattle showing, able to participate and gain so much knowledge.

14.01.2022 We were at Steve and Cheryls Place to pick up our cow, Bella. Bella had been there for 3 months, catching up with her old flame, Just Cruzn, Cheryl and Steve now have 2 working bulls, one the son of Spliters Creek Just Cruzn. He is a very nice looking red bull, and they are looking for a new forever home for him. I am hoping to download some photos of him possibly Monday. He is a well proportioned young bull. He is quiet but has not been handled. While not registered as yet, he could be. If interested ring me on 0265776186, and we can put you in contact .with the owners.

14.01.2022 We have much to celebrate with the rain that has come down and is still coming down as I write. My name is Libby Brown from LRB Dexter Stud. I have contacted members regarding interest in Dexters and have shared the details to our members that I know have cattle for sale. Please contact me on 0439516196, or send photos to this page directly to show everyone what is happening at your place.

13.01.2022 Dont forget our meeting on Sunday. It is our very important AGM to be followed by a general meeting, and we would love to see you come on board, at 6 PM. 13.01.2022 This is the scary situation our region has been facing this year. We need to take this into consideration when looking at our Cattle Showing Schedule. Somehow we have been able to keep our remaining cattle in good condition, but it is a challenge as we only grass feed our animals, and it is an expense we just have to put up with and manage. We may just be taking it quietly til we get some more rain. There is smoke haze all around us today. A good day to stay inside and catch up on paperwork. How are things going with everyone else?

12.01.2022 And now we have a DCAI Facebook page. Congratulations!. This will make a huge difference I think, allowing quick easy and positive communication that can be seen by everyone who has Facebook. I know it has been challenging getting everything together, and moving forward. i hope our Dexter community do get behind the initiatives, and help the organisation move forward in a cohesive way. even if and when we are not totally in agreement. Hopefully there will be more opportuniti...es to express your views and be listened to, Here in the Hunter and Manning Valley we are mainly focused on keeping our cattle going. Nice to know we can ask a question, or send a picture occasionally both showing our successes and occasional failures. The Dexter Cattle Enthusiasts page also plays a role, especially in communicating to the wider Dexter Cattle Community. It is always so interesting to hear what everyone else is doing, and there is always someone out there with an answer to most issues and concerns. We are hoping we can pop some celebratory Champagne when the rain comes tumbling down soon. See more

11.01.2022 I was driving back to farm tonight, when a news bulletin came on saying that a fire was heading towards Bendoch on the NSW and Victorian border. Our thoughts for everyone down there. I know that there are Dexter breeders in the area. We pray that you are all safe.

11.01.2022 We missed another great opportunity last weekend. People in the Branxton / Singleton area had the opportunity to avail themselves of free trees from the local Land Care Group. I was busy doing stuff outside and when my neighbour sent the link, it was too late, They were all booked up. It was a cold bleak morning so i thought there was a chance that someone may not have bothered, but they all did. There was nothing left over. Always next year I guess. This was the result of having Tocal cancelled this year. Next year, hopefully there will be another opportunity at the actual Tocal Field Days,

08.01.2022 I was thinking that we could post pictures of the Stud Bulls in our Manning Valley Dexter Cattle Group up here for all to see. This is a picture of Hobbit Hill Drogo, who belongs to William and Terrie Collins at Dalwood. He is still available for sale. He has excellent credentials. He was bred by Neale and Jeanette Bourne, in Queensland.

07.01.2022 How are things going for everyone? We thought after the 3 years of drought, the fires and then the god giving rain coming down we would get through whatever life challenges came upon us, But COVD 19 has put a spanner in the works for sure. It is affecting everyone world wide whether we like it or not. The great thing is it does mean with the current lock down rules in place we have an opportunity to not only limit the spread of the virus, but also have some time out to plan a...nd recuperate. I hope everyone can stay positive in these absolutely testing times. Some good things could be that there may be more interest in more sustainable ways to survive what is going on at present. And what better way than having a Dexter or two in the mix. I have had enquiries regarding the borrowing of a bull. If you think you might meet the criteria, of a friendly easy to handle Dexter Bull, with immunisations up to date etc, which may or may not be registered but must be purebred, there might be some options for your bull to enjoy some new paddocks for a couple of months. Please contact me, Libby, at LRB Dexter Stud, on 0439516196. And I can bring you in contact with the Dexter owner looking for such a service. See more

07.01.2022 It was a great relief to hear that Lisa and family are back home, after some harrowing days, where fires raged around them. We r still in the process of collecting our cows from Diamond Beach. Ron is going up today to do so. So they will be back tonight. Roads are still closed in the area, but there are ways in and out. I am going to be growing another lot of Maringa trees. Lost the lot last year, probably due to over watering. I didnt realize how much they hate too much w...ater. We r not in the best area for them as they hate frost as well. Anyone in warm dry conditions further north of us could have much better chance of success. A great feed tree, with every bit of the tree highly nutritious. Hopefully things will settle down now. But there is not a lot of rain on the horizon so it is still worrying times for us all. Wishing everyone a safe time in the coming weeks. See more

07.01.2022 Things are serious further north of us. Our very best wishes to Lisa and Ian at Burrill Creek. . I have received a message to say they are leaving for a safer area. Our best wishes to you all, and everyone out there going through anxious times. We have just received a message from family at Diamond Beach to say that our cows are safe for the moment but things are still volatile there. We will be waiting anxiously for more news and updates as the weather unfolds.

07.01.2022 There have been some interesting developments at LLS that I have not previously been aware of, so I think it is a new initiative. I had rung them to find out when is the best time to worm cows in calf. I found out from my local vet that after they calf is best, but the vet attached to LLS rang me back to also answer my enquiry, and was extremely informative, saying that instead of worming your cattle indiscriminately, you can get their poos tested and find out what if anythin...g you need to do, and it is a free service. Just pop in to your Local Land Service Office when they are open, get your kit. Make sure the specimen is a fresh one, and send a sample back for testing. You dont have to test each and every animal but just get a sample in different lots of what and where the animals are situated. Eg, I had a steer and bull in a different area to the cows, and I had wormed them recently as the bull is a new acquisition. The cows have not been wormed for a while, over 6 months. And I have 2 lots of cows in different paddocks. So i will get 3 test kits, and check it out. So good to know what you are dealing with. See more

07.01.2022 Congratulations to all those involved in putting together the last DCAI newsletter for the year, and the first Newsletter for the new Council for 2019- 2020 year. It sounds positive, and with some concessions which hopefully will make a difference, i hope all members who have been tardy with membership renewals will be encouraged by these initiatives to take advantage of this and take up the option to renew their membership now. WE DO NEED YOU! While the fires are still aff...ecting our members up north, mid-coast, and further south, we are getting used to the smell of smoke, and clouds emanating from the Bushfires miles away. I heard yesterday that water cartage fees are increasing dramatically in the Gloucester area as those carting the water have to travel further to find supplies, so I am hoping the rain comes soon, and we all manage to hang in there til it does. We extend heartfelt Xmas wishes to all our families who have welcomed the opportunity of owning Dexter cattle, and hope the season goes well for you. We hope we can support you through what has been a tough time. And we look forward to more opportunities to share friendships and have some simple fun, taking our Dexters to shows, small farm events, and Field days in 2020.

06.01.2022 I am not sure I would be in a position to save my animals in the case of a sudden emergency. Here are some good pointers.

06.01.2022 Does anyone have any books regarding Dexters from way back when? This was on the Dexter Cattle Enthusiasts Page, contributed by Lynele Mae Kruger. Thought it was worth sharing.

05.01.2022 Heres hoping we get more of this. I think it is called rain! So far 0.3 mms. But it is cooler, and feels very comfortable. There is more promised over the next few days!!! Just 1 - 5 mms. Very grateful!

05.01.2022 Smoke around everywhere now, but so far all our members have survived the ravages of wind and fire with plenty of stories to tell. Unfortunately it means no feed around for some of us. Lisa has asked if anyone wants some Dexters they are keen to find buyers for their stock, as they have no feed left. So if you, or someone you know, is looking for stock, please let me know and I will put you / them in touch with Lisa.

05.01.2022 Just putting it out there that 3 day sickness is around. We have only had one of ours affected so far, and has made a full recovery. Keep an eye out for animals down and struggling to get back on their feet. They may need help to get access to water and food. There are some good websites available for advice if you are worried.

04.01.2022 This may or may not affect you, but I thought it was an important message to get out there just in case you or someone you know has been affected.

03.01.2022 DCAI AGM was held this afternoon via teleconference. A good contingency from our little group attended, and It was an interesting session where a lot was discussed. My overall impression was that it was well run with everyone, identifying themselves, and following the meeting protocols. While it was still a long meeting I thought there was much to feel positive about for the future. An excellent option having the Auditor there to present his report, which allowed important di...scussion about accounting issues, which seemed to have most of the members present getting some inside understanding about how the system works. The President's report was brief but to the point, outlining the many hardships many of our members have faced over the last 12 months, or more. Our organisation received much support from other Dexter Groups around the world, during the horrific bushfires, that swept through huge amounts of the Australian towns and villages and farms. This money was used to support those members who had lost so much - stock, fences etc. So greatly appreciated by everyone. The Council have worked very hard to achieve their aims, and the session today was a credit to all their hard work. We all hope for better times ahead, and will be looking forward to more rain, much kindness, and lots of opportunities to safely show off our delightful Dexters. See more

03.01.2022 Hobbit Hill Drogo, owned by T&W Collins of Dalwood.

01.01.2022 What a tough year it has been, even more so than the previous two years before this, which we also thought were tough. The Hunter Region and the Manning Valley as well as the Central Coast, are all areas that MVDCG represent. Most of our members have been impacted with Drought conditions, Fires threatening, and / or the extra cost of feeding our animals, due to the shortage of feed available. We are unfortunately also needing to make hard decisions about culling stock. Somet...hing we did not think would ever affect us like this. I hope everyone is able to hang in there, or will put an SOS out if they need a helping hand, We are a day closer to real rain. In fact we will be happy with just a few mms. And we are looking forward to a brighter 2020. Our thoughts for everyone over the Xmas period. Take care and enjoy the important things in life - family and friends. See more
