25.01.2022 Pregnancy is a challenging time in terms of knowing what you can and cannot eat. There are so many rules and recommendations that it’s hard to know what’s true and myth. One of the foods I am commonly asked about is cheese and whether or not it is safe to eat while pregnant. There are some cheeses that are perfectly safe to consume during pregnancy (woohoo!). Hard cheeses are the safer option to consume during pregnancy and can even help you reach your daily calcium goals. Ha...rd cheese varieties that are safe during pregnancy include: Parmesan, Cheddar, Gouda, Swiss and Manchego to name a few. These types of cheese are considered safe because they have a low moisture content and therefore don’t provide adequate conditions for harmful bacteria, like listeria, to grow in.

24.01.2022 Iron is important for your baby’s growth and development, energy and brain development, so it’s essential that your little one gets enough. As they go through growth spurts, they can easily become lacking in iron. Not introducing solids early enough, a poor appetite and/or diet, or filling up on too much milk so that they don’t get enough iron-rich foods are all common causes of inadequate iron intake. If you are a new Mumma, try these delicious and nutritious iron-rich foods... for your baby: - Porridge - Steamed broccoli - Salmon patties - Baked beans - Meatballs - Mini frittatas See more

20.01.2022 Coeliac disease is one of our key interests here at Marchini Nutrition. It often surprises people how often people with coeliac disease need to see a dietitian and fertility is certainly one of those very important times....

20.01.2022 Did you know that we have the one of the highest rates of gestational diabetes in the Hunter? So many cases could be avoided if people and GPs were more aware of the risk factors and referred to a dietitian for lifestyle advice.

20.01.2022 Watch out for the new edition of #newcastlebaby, the free annual magazine to support people of Newcastle with baby 'stuff'. What a great resource, and I'm proud to have an article in there on fertility. Sally :)

19.01.2022 Yes. Fish and other seafood provide an invaluable source of omega-3 fatty acids and are also rich in protein and so are strongly encouraged as a staple of pregnancy diet. The concern with fish is that some types are high in mercury, which if over consumed may lead to toxicity. Large predatory fish at the top of the food chain generally contain higher levels of mercury (e.g. flake). Although it is advised to limit your intake of these bigger fish, pregnant women should still f...eel confident to eat low mercury fish regularly. Types of low mercury fish and seafood include salmon, mackerel, canned salmon/tuna, herring, whiting, snapper, prawns and sardines. Women are encouraged to have one serve (150g) 2-3 times a week. If you’re concerned or if you need more advice about healthy eating during pregnancy talk to one of our Nutrition Plus dietitians, like Sally from Marchini Nutrition, for personalised advice.

12.01.2022 This is my favourite Saturday lunch. I have it before going to the gym as it has lots of awesome nutrients in it to make me strong and give me energy. Ingredients are a 250g pack of frozen spinach (defrosted for 3 mins in microwave), 1-2 tomatoes chopped (depends on size), half a 420g tin of 4 bean mix (rinsed), a generous handful of grated light cheddar and 2 eggs. Mix it all together, pan fry til bubbling then pop it under the grill til brown on top. A splash of tomato and sriracha sauce doesn’t go astray either. It’s awesome comfort food, really yummy, quick to make and gives you most of your veggie serves too! Enjoy! Sally
