15.01.2022 To the many people that have horses suffering itch, I wanted to share my recent experience. I have been treating 6 of my 10 horses for Qld itch for a long time... now. None of the treatments made any real difference. Mariska Jones from Wattlelane Stables suggested that I could in fact be dealing with mites, not Qld itch. There is an epidemic of mites in South East Queensland and many horses are being misdiagnosed as having itch when it is actually mane mites. Since finding this out, I have been intensively treating all 10 horses twice weekly, spraying their manes, tails and ears with permethrin mixed in coconut oil and water. I ensure that the solution gets right down to the skin as that is where it needs to be to kill off the mites. New mites will hatch every 3 to 4 days so you must ensure that this procedure is repeated this often until the problem is resolved. I also wormed them all with Equest gel which helps as well. The results are encouraging and after many years of misdiagnosing the horses with itch, we are finally seeing positive results and the horses are much happier in themselves. They line up to be sprayed now. Feather, Heather and Neosho had the worst problem. Neosho is still struggling a little but improving none the less. The results with the mares are amazing. I wanted to share pictures to show the rapid improvement. I am also feeding Hair in a Bucket along with their usual minerals and this is speeding up hair regrowth. I hope that this may help other people that are battling with a problem that may in fact not be Qld itch at all. If the sores are located mainly in the mane, tail, ears and face then consider an aggressive regime to treat for mites. You have to be vigilant to have this work well but once it does and you see how much happier the horses are, it is well worth the effort. I am now going to start the horses on a detox and cleanse to help them deal with the chemicals that I have had to use to control the problem. The itch problem has been an emotional roller coaster for me for many years. I detest seeing my horses uncomfortable and have spent thousands of dollars attempting to help them all to no avail. This is the most wonderful result and I really hope that it may help other people who are also on a similar path with their beloved horses. See more
