24.01.2022 Stay safe and enjoy this summer boating season

24.01.2022 With a higher number of boats on the water this summer, the potential for onboard fires is a concern. A quick tutorial by #marineareacommand on how to use your fire extinguishers is a timely reminder.

24.01.2022 Marine Rescue Broken Bay member Ian McFarlane thanked #danmurphys at Mona Vale for supporting the Broken Bay unit by giving us the opportunity to setup donation boxes in their store. COVID19 has prevented our unit from doing fundraising activities so every little bit helps.

24.01.2022 Broken Bay 30 is on the water throughout Pittwater and Broken Bay with a specific mission today. Our BB30 vessel and crew will spend the day methodically performing VHF (including our Discrete Communications Network) signal and quality service checks to pinpoint areas that may lack or suffer poor coverage with the view to add the findings to a much wider project of improving the publicly available VHF service. Thankyou to the Broken Bay crew who have given up their Friday to help our boating community with this important communication service.

23.01.2022 Broken Bay 30 on show this morning, so good to see MRNSW being showcased.

22.01.2022 Boaters have been encouraged to ensure they're ready for the summer. Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos and Deputy Commissioner Alex Barrell this morn...ing this morning joined Police and Emergency Services Minister David Elliott and other senior members of the emergency services to deliver important summer safety advice to the community. Volunteers from Marine Rescue Port Jackson and Marine Rescue Middle Harbour also attended on board rescue vessels Port Jackson 20 and Middle Harbour 30. Mr Elliott urged boaters to Log On and Log Off with MRNSW when heading out on the water and to ensure everyone on board was wearing a lifejacket. Residents were also reminded to prepare their bushfire survival plan, not to drive through floodwater, to swim between the flags and make sure their home was fire safe this summer. Aussie summers are iconic, but they can also be tragic. Last year, we had a horror bushfire season. This year, we’re expecting a wet and wild summer. But bushfires and storms are not the only threats we face, Mr Elliott said. I urge you to use the start of summer as a start of a conversation with your friends and families about being prepared for seasonal hazards. Especially this year, as experts warn of a La Niña summer. Commissioner Tannos said the service's volunteers were ready for a record summer on the water as more people stayed home instead of heading overseas on holidays. Boaters should always Log On with Marine Rescue when heading out and Log Off when they return on VHF Channel 16 or the free MarineRescue App. It’s quick and simple and gives you the reassurance that our volunteers are watching out for your safe return, he said. Find out more about the steps you can take to Get Ready for summer at https://resilience.nsw.gov.au/prepare.html

21.01.2022 Congratulations to Rob Chant (left) for attaining his Competent Crew rating. To reach this milestone, every new member must complete a training program that not only tests their boating knowledge but also practical skills such as maritime Fire Fighting, sea survival, advanced First Aid plus much more. A great achievement. Thank you Rob for volunteering for MRNSW Broken Bay.

21.01.2022 Marine Rescue NSW crews rescued more than 950 people - including 90 children - during April, returning them safely to shore. Boaters flocked back to the water ...for the Easter holidays and to enjoy the last of the warm weather before the winter chill sets in but many were forced to call for help when they ran into trouble. While 17 boats capsized and 16 ran aground, almost 60 per cent of rescues were caused by engine problems, flat batteries and fuel issues. The majority of those rescued were out fishing, cruising or sailing, with the open runabout the most commonly rescued boat (115), followed by cabin runabouts (54) and monohull sailing vessels (33).

21.01.2022 Your not alone.. if you need support or just need to talk make the call....

07.01.2022 RETURN TO FINE WEATHER SEES SURGE IN BOATING RESCUES This was the busiest weekend of the summer for Marine Rescue NSW volunteers, who launched more than a hundr...ed rescue missions as thousands of holiday boaters took advantage of the great conditions to hit the water right along the coastline. Commissioner Stacey Tannos said MRNSW volunteers had carried out 110 rescue missions over the weekend, including 17 in response to life-endangering emergencies. Our volunteers returned 299 people, including 41 children, along with five pets safely to shore, he said. Boaters flocked to the water to take advantage of the ideal conditions and fine, warm weather. It was great to see so many people out particularly following the lifting of COVID restrictions on Sydney’s Northern Beaches but the extra traffic meant our volunteers were working from early in the morning to beyond sunset to help bring people home safely. Commissioner Tannos said many of the rescues could have been avoided if boaters had taken basic safety precautions before heading out on the water. Two thirds of this weekend’s rescues were to save boaters stranded by engine failure, flat batteries and fuel problems including one boater who ran out of fuel 30 nautical miles east of Barrenjoey, he said. Many of these problems can be prevented if you make sure your boat’s in good repair and that you have a full tank of fuel. Remember the rule of thirds when planning your trip a third for the trip out, another for the return, and a third in reserve. Most important of all, make sure everyone on board is wearing a lifejacket and Log On with Marine Rescue NSW on VHF Channel 16 or the free Marine Rescue NSW App. This free service gives you the peace of mind from knowing our volunteers are watching out for your safe return and if you don’t Log Off as planned, we will start searching for you.

06.01.2022 Another new rescue vessel has officially joined the Marine Rescue NSW fleet today, with the commissioning of the $613,000 Broken Bay 30. Police and Emergency Se...rvices Minister David Elliott, Planning and Public Spaces Minister, Pittwater MP Rob Stokes, and Federal Member for Mackellar Jason Falinski joined volunteers of Marine Rescue Broken Bay for the vessel commissioning and naming ceremony at the Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay. MRNSW Directors, Commissioner Stacey Tannos, Deputy Commissioner Alex Barrell and representatives of neighbouring units also were on hand. Mr Elliott said the NSW Government had provided MRNSW with a record budget, the largest investment it had ever made in the organisation. "I make no apology for that. It creates a unique opportunity for a new generation of facilities, equipment and capability," he said. "This will be an extremely busy summer as Australians try to enjoy our own backyards and staycations. There will be more pressure on our waterways and more pressure on you. Australians are reassured you're out there." He said the modern new vessel was a significant investment in boating safety on Sydney's busy northern waterways. Mr Stokes said it was in many ways a historic day, recognising where MRNSW had come from and where it was going. He recalled the time when the Krait - famous for the Z Force raid on shipping in Singapore Harbour during World War II - had been the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol flagship on local waters. Mr Stokes announced a $100,000 Community Building Partnerships grant towards a replacement for the current Broken Bay unit base at Rowland Reserve, ensuring the unit would have the capability to continue providing the service on which the boating community depended. Commissioner Stacey Tannos thanked the State Government for its support, with its $37.6 million investment enabling the service to provide its volunteers with state of the art vessels and facilities. "It was a game changer for our organisation. It was recognition by the government of how proud they are of the work of our volunteers," he said. He said Broken Bay 30, a 10 metre Naiad, was the 103rd boat delivered to MRNSW volunteer units over the past decade. "We take great pride in building all our boats in NSW, supporting regional jobs and the regional industry," he said. Unit Commander Jimmy Arteaga announced the vessel would be named after long-time member Michael Seale, who had committed 30,880 days or 38 years' service to MRNSW and the RVCP. He said the naming was richly deserved, recognising Mr Seale's record of service and input in many roles, including as a vessel Master, a Director and Chair of the RVCP, his involvement in the purchase of the unit's vessels, a Director on the initial Board and Fleet Committee of MRNSW, Deputy Unit Commander and Administraion Officer. Mr Seale said he was both surprised and honoured by the naming. The First Bayview Sea Scouts also attended the ceremony, performing the national anthem and later getting a tour of the new boat.

06.01.2022 Our new Broken Bay members attended their MRNSW mandatory LROCP session tonight with our Unit Commander teaching the class. The second session will require our new members to send and receive messages using our training VHF radios in preparation for their exam on Friday. Thanks to our new members for giving up their evenings to complete their training.

06.01.2022 An exciting day for our Broken Bay unit as we officially name our new rescue vessel after a deserving member plus, officially commission the vessel into service. A lot of work and time has been invested by our volunteers to get to this point, so thank you to each one of them for their commitment and professional attitude. Volunteers saving life on the water

The vessel was brought alongside to complete the tow from Palm Beach back to Taylor's Point. The crew of BB30 will be returning back to base in the dark after a big effort today.

04.01.2022 BB30 has been tasked to help assist a 40ft yacht that has suffered a fire onboard. BB30 will tow the vessel from Coasters Retreat in Pittwater. All crew on the yacht are safe.

03.01.2022 Thanks to the mild weather and generally good boating conditions, Marine Rescue volunteers were kept busy up and down the NSW coast over the weekend. A total of 39 rescues were performed, of which 9 were emergencies, with a total of 79 people rescued. A big thank you to our dedicated volunteers for this wonderful effort.... And remember that if you are planning on heading out this weekend, to carry all required safety gear, and to Log On and Log Off with Marine Rescue on VHF Channel 16 or via the free Marine Rescue app.

03.01.2022 The Red Poppy has special significance for Australians. Worn on Remembrance Day (11 November) each year, the red poppies were among the first to flower in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium in the First World War.
