25.01.2022 Marine Rescue Port Jackson Crew towing training - part of what we do every shift is towing "disabled" vessels safely back to a ramp, mooring or wharf. "Tug Tows" or towing along side is the process of towing a disabled vessel side by side, and allows the Marine Rescue vessel great manoeuvrability of the disabled vessel. Our crew can have a vessel secured with 4 lines (ropes) within 30 seconds and start moving off to get the boating public home safe and sound. 23.01.2022 CHECK IT Safe boating means assessing the weather, as well as sea or river conditions, before heading out. Conditions can change quickly, so don’t hesitate to head back in. If in doubt, don’t go out.... Stay tuned into the weather while out on the water. VHF marine radio is the most effective and reliable means of accessing weather information while at sea. 23.01.2022 Over the weekend Marine Rescue Port Jackson was kept busy with over 10 assists, ranging from small tinnies who had run out of fuel up to 68ft catamarans requiring assistance when their anchor winch jammed. When not actively involved in assists both vessel were dedicated in keeping their first aid training to the high standard required by Marine Rescue NSW this included the treatment of bites, burns, breaks, heart attacks, CPR and allergic reactions. These role play scenari...os are to ensure that our unit is ready to tackle anything that may present itself from a member of the public or crew member within Sydney Harbour. We also had our two of our latest Leading Crew step up and become masters of the vessels, congratulations Hamish and David for your hard work and dedication to becoming vessel masters, while on Sunday we had some of our next up and coming Leading Crew candidates becoming acting masters on their vessels. Acting Masters under the supervision on the vessel masters take control of the vessel getting them ready for when they take the next step to Leading Crew. Emma, Thosh, Clare and Krassy all performed outstandingly in what was some challenging weather and activities. With another weekend over Marine Rescue Port Jackson will be on the water ready to do it all again next weekend.

23.01.2022 EXPIRED FLARE COLLECTION Flares signal that you are in trouble and provide an exact location for searching aircraft or vessels. Most flares have a use-by date of three years and they must be replaced before the expiry date. It is an offence to set off flares except in an emergency so they must be disposed of safely.... Expired flares are being collected in the local area as follows: - Ermington Boat Ramp Sunday 17 January from 1030am - noon - Drummoyne Boat Ramp Sunday 17 January from 1pm - 230pm - Transport for NSW Head Office 33 James Craig Road Rozelle Sunday 17 January from 9am - 11am - Rose Bay Boat Ramp Sunday 17 January from noon - 130pm

23.01.2022 BOATING SAFETY ALERT Boaters in the Illawarra region have been asked to double-check that their VHF radios are switched off as a matter of urgency. A boat’s rad...io has been left on since early yesterday evening, meaning it has been transmitting non-stop for about the past 18 hours, which is interfering with VHF marine radio transmissions along the coastline from Port Kembla to Ulladulla. This is a public safety issue for boaters on these waters as the interference may mean radio operators at the Marine Rescue Port Kembla, Shoalhaven, Jervis Bay, Sussex Inlet and Ulladulla radio based cannot hear distress calls or other contacts from other boaters. This is particularly problematic if the boat with the radio on is sitting between the radio base and another boat in trouble. Boaters are urged to check their radios as soon as possible.

23.01.2022 Yet another busy weekend for Port Jackson crew with lots of assists. Currently Port Jackson 30 is assisting a vessel near Barangaroo after an earlier snagged anchor

18.01.2022 Riddle for today: You are travelling somewhere on the waterway connected to Sydney Harbour in restricted visibility. You see a vessel crossing ahead of you with a green over red light in the direction of travel, a yellow flashing light in the middle and a red light at the back.... 1. Where are you? 2. 17.01.2022 Severe Thunderstorm Warning for LARGE HAILSTONES and HEAVY RAINFALL for the Metropolitan, Illawarra and parts of South Coast and Southern Tablelands Forecast Di...stricts. Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Gosford, Sydney, Parramatta, Wollongong, Nowra and Bowral. Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Snowy Mountains district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED. The NSW SES advises that people should: * Move your car under cover. * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. * Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water. * If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue. * Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. * After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides. * Unplug computers and appliances. * Avoid using the phone during the storm. * Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well. * Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

THE collection program provides the boating community with an opportunity to safely dispose of their out of date flares.

15.01.2022 A timely reminder for the summer season. Random breath testing (RBT) and random drug testing (RDT) can be conducted on the operator of a vessel while it is underway, including drifting. A designated driver (skipper) should remain under the legal limit when out on the water in case you need to move your vessel. Permissible concentration of alcohol limits are as follows:... -under 18 years: 0.00 -commercial vessel operators: under 0.02 -recreational vessel operators: under 0.05 The operator of a vessel includes: -Anyone steering or exercising control over the vessel -The observer (when towing) -Person being towed by a vessel -A person supervising the operator of a vessel under 16 years of age. It is also offence for the master of a vessel to allow another person to operate a vessel if they have reason to believe that the person is under the influence of alcohol or any other drug. That means if you are at anchor, you should be under the limit. If you are out waterskiing, the skipper, observer and towed person ALL must be under the limit. Keep safe Read more on NSW Maritime page here: https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au//safet/offences-penalties.html

01.01.2022 Boaters have been encouraged to ensure they're ready for the summer. Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos and Deputy Commissioner Alex Barrell this morning this morning joined Police and Emergency Services Minister David Elliott and other senior members of the emergency services to deliver important summer safety advice to the community. Volunteers from Marine Rescue Port Jackson and Marine Rescue Middle Harbour also attended on board rescue vessels Port Jackson 20 an...d Middle Harbour 30. Mr Elliott urged boaters to Log On and Log Off with MRNSW when heading out on the water and to ensure everyone on board was wearing a lifejacket. Residents were also reminded to prepare their bushfire survival plan, not to drive through floodwater, to swim between the flags and make sure their home was fire safe this summer. Aussie summers are iconic, but they can also be tragic. Last year, we had a horror bushfire season. This year, we’re expecting a wet and wild summer. But bushfires and storms are not the only threats we face, Mr Elliott said. I urge you to use the start of summer as a start of a conversation with your friends and families about being prepared for seasonal hazards. Especially this year, as experts warn of a La Niña summer. Commissioner Tannos said the service's volunteers were ready for a record summer on the water as more people stayed home instead of heading overseas on holidays. Boaters should always Log On with Marine Rescue when heading out and Log Off when they return on VHF Channel 16 or the free MarineRescue App. It’s quick and simple and gives you the reassurance that our volunteers are watching out for your safe return, he said. Find out more about the steps you can take to Get Ready for summer at https://resilience.nsw.gov.au/prepare.html
