25.01.2022 Clean up crews led by NSW Maritime are back out on the beaches and bays of NSW after several confirmed sightings of more debris from the APL England shipping co...ntainer incident that occurred in May. NSW Maritime A/ Executive Director Alex Barrell said teams to the north and south of Sydney were responding after members of the public sent through pictures and alerted the hotline late yesterday and this morning. We have multiple teams now cleaning up the shipping container parts, face masks and plastic food containers which have recently washed up at Cronulla and Boat Harbour, and around the Royal National Park at Burning Palms, Garie and Era Beaches, Mr Barrell said. Additionally, there are also confirmed reports of debris coming ashore at Forresters Beach and Maitland Bay on the Central Coast and as far away as Lord Howe Island. Sea conditions along with recent wild weather appear to have stirred up containers on the ocean floor. Skippers should remain vigilant and keep a proper lookout as there is now a greater possibility of encountering container pieces that are submerged, semi-submerged or floating. Modelling is being used to determine likely impacts with increased inspections being carried out as a result. Mr Barrell said while the reports of debris and containers had slowed considerably in recent weeks, clean up resourcing would be maintained as part of the NSW Government’s commitment and responsibilities in protecting the coastline. NSW Maritime will continue to maintain the capability to quickly mobilise crews when notified about debris by members of the community, he said. The container ship APL England lost 50 containers 73 kilometres off Sydney in waters around two kilometres deep on May 24. Debris started to wash ashore two days later. Members of the public who find debris or see containers are asked to call 13 12 36 (Option 2) or email [email protected]

25.01.2022 Volunteers from Marine Rescue Tuross have been shocked by the discovery this morning that their rescue vessel, Tuross 20, has been senselessly vandalised overni...ght. The vessel is off the water for urgent repairs after a large rock was thrown through the vessel’s windscreen. Marine Rescue NSW Monaro Regional Operations Manager Glenn Sullivan said arrangements had been quickly put in place when the damage was discovered to ensure that the safety of the local boating community was maintained while the repairs were carried out. Neighbouring units at Batemans Bay to the north and Narooma to the south will cover the waterways for their Tuross colleagues. Mr Sullivan said the irresponsible and thoughtless vandals had potentially placed lives at risk. Anyone with information on the damage is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. 17.01.2022 Exciting news for Marine Rescue NSW today with the announcement that Australia's first dedicated marine rescue training centre will be developed on the site of ...the State Headquarters in a $12 million investment to ensure there are more skilled rescuers ready to save lives on the water. Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott MP joined Attorney General and Cronulla MP Mark Speakman at the Hungry Point Reserve, where the Marine Rescue NSW Training Academy will be established. "This state of the art facility will ensure we have more fully trained first responders on the marine radio airwaves and water to rescue boaters in trouble," Mr Elliott said. "The NSW Government is a proud supporter of MRNSW volunteers, which is why we have invested an additional $37.6 million for new vessels, improved operating facilities and enhancements to the marine radio network." Mr Speakman said the Training Academy would ensure the preservation of the heritage values of the Hungry Point Reserve and continue its use for maritime-related activities, while maintaining public access to the site's open parkland. "This project will protect the history of the reserve, stretching back to the earliest Indigenous inhabitants living here on Port Hacking, through to its later use as a migrant hostel and the Department of Primary Industries fisheries research centre," he said. MRNSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos said the Academy would help make boating safer on NSW waterways by sustaining volunteer marine rescue services. 'The Hungry Point Reserve offers a once in a generation opportunity to establish a marine rescue centre of excellence," he said. "This is another milestone for MRNSW, coming at the end of our 10th anniversary year and soon after National Volunteers Week." The Academy will include a large lecture/meeting room, smaller classrooms equipped with marine simulators and other technological learning tools, practical outdoor training areas and pool, accommodation and meal facilities. It will cater for up to 100 trainees a week. With concept drawings of the Academy unveiled this morning, Commissioner Tannos said extensive discussions with the Reserve managers, residents and approval authorities were required before final plans were designed and the Academy's development could begin.

08.01.2022 Marine Rescue NSW radio bases are broadcasting warnings to boaters on the Illawarra coastline to exercise extreme caution and keep a careful lookout for contain...ers and debris floating offshore about 26nm east of Gerringong. Their location was reported by a fisherman who almost collided with them. Water current modelling (below) shows the containers and debris are likely to wash ashore between Beecroft Head and Point Perpendicular at the entrance to Jervis Bay in the next 72 hours. Floating or partially submerged shipping containers and debris could pose a serious navigation hazard to boaters in the area. Boaters should keep a proper lookout and exercise extreme caution. Ensure everyone on board is wearing a lifejacket. Any sighting of containers or debris should be reported to NSW Maritime on 13 12 36.

John’s death is a loss for us and for our community, especially those who enjoy boating on the South Coast. John’s commitment to our mission of saving lives on the water was unwavering, both as a skipper rescuing those in trouble on Jervis Bay and its surrounding waterways and a Radio Operator watching over boaters for their safe return to shore, as he was doing at the time of his passing. John was a valued and much-loved member of his unit, whose contribution, leadership and abilities will be missed. He had gained our senior qualifications as a Coxswain and Watch Officer and on top of his operational duties, he also took on additional responsibilities as his unit’s Membership Officer, caring for his fellow volunteers. But above all of that, he was a loving partner and father. The dedication of our volunteers to our community and our organisation is never taken for granted but today I again thank each of our members for their service and fortitude and John’s family for sharing him with us all.

02.01.2022 Boaters have been encouraged to ensure they're ready for the summer. Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos and Deputy Commissioner Alex Barrell this morn...ing this morning joined Police and Emergency Services Minister David Elliott and other senior members of the emergency services to deliver important summer safety advice to the community. Volunteers from Marine Rescue Port Jackson and Marine Rescue Middle Harbour also attended on board rescue vessels Port Jackson 20 and Middle Harbour 30. Mr Elliott urged boaters to Log On and Log Off with MRNSW when heading out on the water and to ensure everyone on board was wearing a lifejacket. Residents were also reminded to prepare their bushfire survival plan, not to drive through floodwater, to swim between the flags and make sure their home was fire safe this summer. Aussie summers are iconic, but they can also be tragic. Last year, we had a horror bushfire season. This year, we’re expecting a wet and wild summer. But bushfires and storms are not the only threats we face, Mr Elliott said. I urge you to use the start of summer as a start of a conversation with your friends and families about being prepared for seasonal hazards. Especially this year, as experts warn of a La Niña summer. Commissioner Tannos said the service's volunteers were ready for a record summer on the water as more people stayed home instead of heading overseas on holidays. Boaters should always Log On with Marine Rescue when heading out and Log Off when they return on VHF Channel 16 or the free MarineRescue App. It’s quick and simple and gives you the reassurance that our volunteers are watching out for your safe return, he said. 02.01.2022 UPDATE: The skipper of this vessel has subsequently reported that he was able to make it back to shore before his boat sank. The crew of Port Kembla 30 has been... stood down. A good result. A crew from Marine Rescue Port Kembla is responding to a boat taking on water with three people on board off the Seacliff Bridge at Stanwell Park on the Illawarra coastline. The skipper of the fibreglass half-cabin runabout called the unit's Hill 60 radio base to raise the alarm. The crew of Port Kembla 30 is preparing to head north up the coastline.

01.01.2022 One man is dead and another is critical after being swept off rocks at Port Kembla this evening at the same location where three men drowned three weeks ago. Em...ergency services were alerted after three men were swept into the sea just before 7pm (Friday 12 February 2021), at Hill 60 near Fishermans Beach. Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District along with the Toll Rescue Helicopter crew, Surf Lifesaving IRB crew, and Highway Patrol attended the scene and began searching for the men. A Highway Patrol officer entered the sea with a flotation device and swam out to the men, along with a member of the public. Two men and the officer were retrieved from the water by the IRB crew, who transported them to Port Kembla beach. CPR was initiated on one of the men; however, he died at the scene. The police officer and the second man were not injured. The Toll Helicopter crew winched the third man to safety; he has now been transported to Wollongong Hospital where he is reported to be in a critical condition. Two other police officers suffered minor injuries during the rescue operation. There is no further information available at this time on the identities of the men and inquiries are now underway. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.
