Hear what all the buzz is about in our latest episode of Turf’n’Surf, which looks at the impact of varroa mites on the honey industry overseas and how we are working to eradicate varroa mites detected in Townsville. 23.01.2022 Fire ants are extremely dangerous, coordinating their attack to sting repeatedly. At best, their sting is painful. At worst, it can be fatal. 23.01.2022 The rewritten Australian Standards states a minimum equipment requirement when carrying out a termite inspection, and this includes the use of either a Thermal Imaging Camera, and/or Radar Motion Detection Unit. So if the inspector is not using either or both as part of the inspection, then the inspection is non-compliant. Sounding and the other tests from past Standards should also be used, as the equipment mentioned doesnt locate inactivity and hence past damage. So ask 2 questions when seeking a timber pest inspection, is the inspector QBCC licensed, and what equipment is used in the inspection. Ive had 2 people advertising cheap inspections on Local Community Social Media groups, and a license search comes up empty.

22.01.2022 Where are we? Northern Territory or sleepy Maroochy River? Termite mounds are getting super sized in Maroochy River.

20.01.2022 More than 1,000 invasive plants being propagated for sale by backyard growers have been destroyed. Together with Sunshine Coast Council, our officers seized th...e illegal cacti plants that had the potential to become serious pests! The plants seized included drooping tree pear (Opuntia monacantha), Eve's pin cactus (Austrocylindropuntia subulate), blind cactus (Opuntia rufida), bunny ears cactus (Opuntia microdasys), velvety tree pear (Opuntia tomentose) and mother of millions (Bryophyllum delagoense). They have the potential to spread in the same way as the prickly pear cactus, which decimated 60 million acres of land and sent many landholders broke. They could endanger the local environment, stock and native wildlife If you're selling or planning to sell plants, make sure they are not prohibited or restricted under the Biosecurity Act 2014. A list of prohibited plants can be found at https://bit.ly/2T6KCoW, and restricted plants at https://bit.ly/2R5DfLJ. If you know of someone keeping or selling illegal plants, give us a call on 13 25 23.

19.01.2022 Mango pulp weevil (Sternochetus frigidus) is a serious exotic insect pest that tunnels into the flesh of mangoes, making them unfit to eat. If found in Queensla...nd, the pest could have a devastating impact on our mango industry. Mango pulp weevils can be confused with mango seed weevilswhich look very similar and are already present is some parts of Queensland. However, mango pulp weevils only feed inside the flesh (or pulp) of mango fruit; while mango seed weevils feed on and in the mango seed. If you suspect mango pulp weevil, don't hesitate to report it! Call the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881. More details can be found at https://www.business.qld.gov.au//priorit/mango-pulp-weevil.

This will help limit the frequency of visits to the facility and minimise travel. 16.01.2022 Termetrac T3i (World's Number 1 termite detection equipment) now possessed, and inspections are available. Please call for a quote.

15.01.2022 Termites are very prevalent after the recent wet weather. As you can see, ant caps dont stop them. I recommend getting your property checked out, as this is the 4th lot Ive found in a week.

13.01.2022 I am continually amazed by people using mates to do inspections. It is very hard to have comeback against a mate if something goes pear shaped. I work with 2 of the best building inspectors on the Sunshine Coast, & I think $275 is not much to spend on a report, when you consider the amount of money being out laid on a house purchase. Every time I do an inspection & someone has used their carpenter friend to do the building inspection, their friend has missed heaps, E.G. The house is full of asbestos fibro!!

12.01.2022 People buying houses please be aware. It is buyer beware, so protect yourselves by getting independent pest and building inspections. Some agents are supplying reports carried out in their name. There is a disclaimer in the paperwork stating no third party application. This means if your name is not on the report, you have no comeback against the inspectors Company should anything go pear shaped. However, you may have the right to a messy Civil action. The practise is less than honest in my opinion, considering it is a very emotional time when buying property. So be aware!

10.01.2022 Termites are very prevalent after the recent wet weather. As you can see, ant caps don’t stop them. I recommend getting your property checked out, as this is the 4th lot I’ve found in a week.

06.01.2022 Very important to follow our bio security. Often updates on plants and insects as well.

05.01.2022 Spot the difference How many differences can you spot between these two fire ant nest images? If you notice something different in your yard and think you may have fire ants report it! Stay safe, snap a photo and alert us either at daf.qld.gov.au.au/fireants or by calling 13 25 23.

03.01.2022 Did you know the National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program has treated over half a million hectares of land for fire ants since 2017? Thats the same size as almost 70,000 Suncorp Stadiums! But are we winning the war against fire ants? Check to reveal

03.01.2022 Unlike people or animals, plants cant go find their own mates to reproduce, so its really important that our pollinators are staying healthy. No pollination ...= no plants = no food! This week is Australian Pollinator Week which acknowledges our important and unique insect pollinators. To help sustain our populations of native bees and other essential pollinators, make sure theres a good variety of native plants in your garden. Some good options can be found at https://www.australianpollinatorweek.org.au//APW-planting-

01.01.2022 Amazing week, started with the discovery of tiny bats in a client's roof (no action required by me - they are protected, so can only be proofed out)!
