14.01.2022 Physio Education: What is ITB syndrome? Iliotibial band syndrome is an overuse knee injury commonly seen in runners and cyclists Pain is felt in the lateral side of the knee Builds over time, rather than suddenly ... It is thought that the repetitive extension and flexion of the knee can cause friction between the ITB and the femoral condyle. Some research shows the ‘impingement zone’ is 30 degrees of knee flexion, which occurs during foot strike and early stance phase of running. The hip abductor muscles are usually weak, contributing to poor control of the knee, which exacerbates the friction. Hence strengthening these muscles is an important component of the rehab. Rehab Phase 1: Soft tissue massage, stretching and foam rolling of lateral thigh structures eg. ITB, glute med, TFL. Relative rest from aggravating activities. Phase 2: Identify and modify biomechanical causes eg. poor running mechanics, poor seated or standing postures, weakness (eg hip abductors), lack of flexibility, poor control of knee. Examples of Phase 2 Rehab Exercises: 1Lateral strict step down 2Strict step down 3Single leg deadlift If you are suffering from knee pain, come and get it assessed and treated by one of our professionals! Don’t wait until it’s too late. This information is not intended to replace or substitute professional medical or allied health advice. Reading the information on this post does not create a therapist-patient relationship.
