24.01.2022 Easing of restrictions!!! From Wednesday 1 July, the number of people allowed at your wedding will be determined by the ‘one person per 4 square metre rule’. Weddings held on residential premises must not have more than 20 visitors, unless the size of the premises is sufficient to ensure there is at least 4 square metres of space for each person on the premises.... 20.01.2022 SURPRISE WEDDING? Maybe not. If you're thinking that it would be a great idea to arrange a surprise wedding, think again. For an Australian marriage to be legally valid, the surprise element can only be for official witnesses and guests. The ceremony itself cannot come as a surprise to the marrying couple. The couple need to lodge a 'Notice of Intended Marriage' (NOIM) with your celebrant at least one calendar month prior to the "surprise" ceremony (unless a shorteni...ng of time has been approved by the relevant authority), the celebrant must be satisfied that both parties understand the nature of the relationship they intend to enter into and, that they are doing so voluntarily and without duress. Not to mention that your celebrant needs to have sufficient time to establish the identity of each party to the marriage. But... it is legally possible to surprise one of the consenting parties to the marriage with the date, time and location of the marriage, as long as the NOIM has been lodged within the required one calendar month timeframe. For example, a couple could lodge the NOIM with their celebrant but agree to leave all the event planning (date, time, venue and so on) to just one person. The other person would therefore be surprised in that way. It's not common, but it is legal. DM me for more info
