25.01.2022 The International Year of Sound is intended to highlight the importance of sound in all our lives and for many of us that involves music. Almost overnight, the COVID-19 virus has had a devastating impact on all sectors of the music industry. A taskforce of music industry professionals launched a new Sound of Silence initiative sending out an SOS from the Australian and New Zealand music industries. Sound of Silence (SOS) aims to assist the music industry throughout this di...fficult time, and to help them make a speedy recovery on the other side. We saw many artists band together to help during the 2020 bushfires, now is the time to support them. If we dont act now, and soon, the only sound well hear in future? Silence! What can you do to help? If you have the means, please donate to Support Act (Aus) or MusicHelps (NZ), keep streaming Aussie and Kiwi music, contact your local radio stations and ask them to play your favourite local artists, buy music and merch from your favourite bands... and be there at their first gig! #IYS2020 #soundofsilence #soundofsilenceau #supportact #musichelps #supportmusic #music #sound

22.01.2022 With an increasing number of workplaces facing the acoustic challenges of open-plan offices, there are more products appearing on the market that claim to offer visual and acoustic seclusion and reduced distraction for individuals or small groups. Until recently, there has been no standardised acoustic testing method that allows a like-for-like comparison of the sound reduction or speech privacy benefits provided by such products. To address these issues, ISO 23351-1:2020 Aco...ustics Measurement of speech level reduction of furniture ensembles and enclosures Part 1: Laboratory method (ISO 23351-1) was released in June 2020 and presents a standardised method of determining the speech level reduction rating (DS,A) for furniture ensembles and enclosures. If you have questions about ISO 23351-1 or open-plan office design, Marshall Day Acoustics can help. Feel free to contact us here: https://www.marshallday.com/contact-us/

22.01.2022 As it's the International Year of Sound, we wanted to explore unique sounds, and how sound plays a critical part in our lives. Dr Leah Barclay is an Australian sound artist, composer and researcher known for acoustic ecology, environmental field recording, and sound walks. A sample of her work, Listening to Country, can be heard here: https://soundcloud.com//listening-to-country-soundscape-ex... Acoustic ecology is a discipline studying the relationship, mediated through sound, between human beings and their environment. Her work explores ways we can use creativity, new technologies and emerging science to reconnect communities to the environment and inspire climate action, and we hope that sharing this will provide some insight into the diverse field in which we work. #IYS2020 #InternationalYearOfSound #acoustics #sound #acousticecology #environment http://www.listeningtocountry.com/

18.01.2022 Gillian Lee and Mark Webber came across a cool sounding reverb while on a site visit this week. The video demonstrates an extreme example of reverberation - noise bouncing off of surfaces in the room over and over again, resulting in the perception that the sound is lingering for longer than the actual noise source itself. #acoustics #reverb #sound #sitevisit

17.01.2022 Today is UN World Wildlife Day which is all about celebrating and raising awareness of the worlds wild animals and plants. This fascinating research looks at the impact that climate change is having on the soundscape of oceans worldwide. Our underwater acoustics team typically investigates anthropogenic noise such as piling and vessel movements to assess impacts on marine fauna, but in this case, the noise culprit is something far more unsuspecting. 16.01.2022 The multi-award-winning Optus Stadium in Perth has added yet another prestigious award to its collection, winning Australias Best Stadium, as voted by the fans. Marshall Day Acoustics was appointed by Multiplex to provide full design and construction advice on all aspects of the stadium acoustics. The fans first approach was adopted across the project. For acoustics, this meant creating suitable acoustic environments to allow fans maximum enjoyment for both sporting and ...entertainment events. A vibrant, exciting atmosphere was achieved in the seating bowl through careful design of roof angles and bowl surfaces, while in bar and restaurant spaces, sound absorption was used to control noise build-up and create great places to experience the events. This recent award cements Optus Stadiums position as a world-class sporting and entertainment venue and continues to positively impact Western Australia and on a greater level, Australian sporting and tourism industries. 11.01.2022 In response to the rapidly changing situation in Australasia and internationally regarding COVID-19, we wanted to let everyone know that we are planning on business as usual, with a few amendments to suit. Even though the Government has yet to make the call, we are taking the following steps to minimise the risk of transfer to both our staff and the wider community: As of Monday 23 March, staff in our Australian and New Zealand offices are working remotely. Our work practic...es already include remote working, and we are well placed to continue this efficiently Were avoiding all unnecessary travel and will be using online conferencing in place of face-to-face meetings for the foreseeable future. During this time we will make use of email, phone and virtual collaboration tools (eg. Microsoft Teams) to continue our normal consulting activities Scheduling and completion of site surveys will be subject to practical constraints and restrictions, including government recommendations and policies, and Marshall Days own health and safety policies The level of site work that can be done will be dependent on the office and the project. In New Zealand, our site visits will be limited to those facilitating "essential services" On behalf of the team at Marshall Day, we thank you for your understanding. Feel free to contact us if you have any queries on how we will be working with you in the coming weeks. Stay safe and well.

08.01.2022 Today the International Year of Sound 2020 officially launches with the opening ceremony taking place at Le Grand Amphithtre, Sorbonne University, Paris. #IYS2020 is a global initiative to highlight the importance of sound in all aspects of our lives. This event is being hosted in the same city as the stunning Philharmonie de Paris, a concert hall which when it opened in 2015 set a new benchmark in the world of acoustics. Sir Simon Rattle, the prominent British conductor..., talks about the ways this great hall influences performers and can unlock new possibilities in musical expression. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2nBZ2RWib0 The design acoustician Sir Harold Marshall was interviewed by the team at Philharmonie de Paris. He reflects on the development of this hall which brought together his deep understanding of acoustic science with a search for a tangible presence for the room. He found a meeting of minds with the architect Jean Nouvel during their work on this interior. This room created a new typology for concert hall design with the audience seated within a larger outside enclosure, with an unparalleled combination of dynamic range, acoustic clarity, reverberation and envelopment. https://youtu.be/dcuAwCO1Jwk #acoustics #IYS2020 #concerthall #sound #music #paris
