25.01.2022 Lachlan Cutler & I today cleaning up some workshop stuff. Sunday Funday at Martin's Piano Tuning & repairs. Hope next week is great for all. Hard to believe it's almost the end of the year.
22.01.2022 Here's another piano, a Yamaha P2 that's been left sit in the corner for a while & has become yummy treats for about 5,000,000 silver-fish.
21.01.2022 If you wanna be Miles ahead...
20.01.2022 If you've got an old Beale piano & you can't remember the last time it was looked at by a piano tuner, then this is what should be done first before tuning. Because your Beale has a Steel Tuning System, the pins tend to seize some in the steel block - makes sense, right? I lay an old Beale on its back overnight & oil the block with Balistol. Once the oil makes its way into the block, it helps lubricate the pins & there's less likelihood of tuning pins breaking from corrosion.
19.01.2022 This little Yamaha piano needed lots of TLC after an insect infestation & some not-so-satisfactory repairs at the end of the 90's. All the hammers wobbled from side to side, due to careless & loose hammer flange re-pinning. It is impossible to get good tone from your piano if there's excessive sideways hammer movement & also very difficult to tune. There was also lots of felt replacement required & serious cleaning. Hope your Sunday is lovely & relaxing.

14.01.2022 Roger & Barbara's Victor piano this morning. Tightening loose tuning pins in the plank with thin CA (super) glue. Important to have an air extraction unit on hand, when doing this job.

11.01.2022 Lifted from Pianogurus Instagram page This is what every piano tuner ever wishes they could say when the inevitable call comes in, 'Oh, I've just bought a beautiful old piano from market Place. How much do you charge for a tuning?' It's Christmas time coming up too folks and my shirt size is...... I'll let you guess See more
11.01.2022 So true, music is a lifelong journey with no final destination to reach, enjoy every note you ever get to play along the way.
11.01.2022 Another one of these calls yesterday Here are some handy hints for all you DIY piano owners. Don't...remove the piano action to clean it. Don't...wriggle your keys around violently to un-stick them.... Don't...look up YouTube for a fix when a note's not working. Don't...put the hose in it to clean it (nobody does that) Don't...put WD40 on the tuning pins if they look rusty. Don't...unscrew everything off the action. Don't...take your keys out. Don't...buy a nasty chooning hammer to choon your piano. DON'T...even remove the panels from the piano. I mean, you can do all these things if you like. But PLEASE, let me know in advance so I can come & video your job. I promise not to interfere, even if you ask me too. You will become a YouTube sensation.
10.01.2022 New dampers & key bed felt went on this little Yamaha P2 a couple of days ago. Dampers stop the strings sounding after the key returns & it's important that they work well. Key bed felt is important for touch, key height & depth. This job is almost finished. There's some more hammer work to be done. Then, screw them back onto the frame, regulate the action & tune.
09.01.2022 Here we go! Let's talk about Marketplace pianos. The first pic is the piano you SHOULD buy off Marketplace. It's been refurbed by a piano tech, is a reputable model & plays excellently. See the price? Well, that's what you pay for a GOOD piano. There's just no way around it, if you want a quality piano that's going to last. It's not always the case, but it mostly is. There's the odd diamond in the rough. Now for the other pianos - PLEASE have a GOOD look at them. See the comm...ents attached to the pics - just needs a tune, grand old piano, suitable for a beginner, couple of notes not working etc. I often use the car analogy...would you buy your P plater son or daughter a car without brakes, lights, indicators & bald tyres to cut their teeth on? Of course not! It's a similar thing with a piano. If you're heart is set on either you or your kids learning piano, then buy a decent instrument. Don't buy a worn out, old piano & think you've won the jackpot. Many people still do it. Wise folk ask a piano tech for advice or BUY a piano from a piano tech. It's a part of our job to make sure you don't end up with a lemon. See more

07.01.2022 Today is, 'Is Your Piano Okay Day'. Have your piano tuned & repaired. It'll be much better if you do
05.01.2022 Bit of a sad ol' site this. When I did my training in the 1970's, damaged actions like this would pop up from time to time. Now it's far more prevalent. Lots of these actions were installed in 1950's console pianos with rails that were never fully cured. Add to that nearly 300 rusty screws & what you end up with is an action that splits, screws that either fall out or seize & a piano that won't play well. Back in the day, they were called 'Green Actions.' But, if we can catch one of these in time, we can buy many years of extra time. If the screw threads are okay, I'll give them a bath in CLR overnight, wash in water, dry thoroughly then soak in WD40 again overnight. Plus blow out all screw holes with compressed air & fill them with wax before putting it all back together again. Have your piano tuned & serviced regularly.
03.01.2022 Some of the things that make repairing pianos interesting. Cheers to Nick from Far North QLD Piano Services & Lachlan Cutler for helping to clear a bit of a back log through last week. Big thumbs up to you lads!
