25.01.2022 #Selfcare Walking in this forest each day is doing good things to me...Shinrin Yoku...with meditation and self-Reiki treatment.

25.01.2022 "Scans revealed no damage and never will do...scans cannot show a "broken" heart." The Heart is all about joy and happiness. When we are joyful, Heart Chi flows full and unhindered. When we have a bad day or lose one close to us or hate our job or any number of events that cause unhappiness, the flow of Heart Chi is blocked. We are all human, we are all affected by this condition to one degree or another. When Chi flow is blocked, tightness and pain result. This can occur due...Continue reading

23.01.2022 Regrettably, due to Stage 4 Restrictions I am unable to practice and will not be attending clinic. All appointments are cancelled until further notice. Massage and Myotherapy Australia advise I am only able to practice where the patient is under a medically approved health care plan and their condition is "critical" requiring treatment to maintain independence and prevent admission to hospital. In these instances I am prepared to treat clients. Contact me on the number below ...to arrange an appointment. I look forward to seeing you once again when this has passed. Keep well. 23.01.2022 There are a few therapists holding the view there is no such thing as bad posture and it is not our job as therapists to help our clients improve it. My response to one such comment... Thats a novel concept...no such thing as good or bad posture...it really never came up as a thought in my mind. In my clinical practice it is rare I see a client with good/perfect posture...could almost count them on one hand. The rest of us "normal" specimens are dragging our carcasses throug...h life hampered by some postural issue or another that results in less than ideal function and may cause pain or injury. To start with most have tight chests restricting breath and medially rotating humerus >>> slightly impinging the Supra & Longhead Biceps tendons making them vulnerable to injury/degradation, it also exaggerates kyphosis and contributes to Forward Head Carriage >>> blocking energetic flow up the backline of the neck >>> tight occipital region >>> headaches plus even more sinister long term effects according to TCM. The affects of too much sitting and/or sleeping in foetal position on hips >>> tight hip flexors >>> bilateral forward hip rotation >>> excessive lordosis >>> lower back pain and a flow through affect on upper back and neck. More than 50% of my clients have Short Right Leg Syndrome which results in both hip rotation and tilt anomalies leading to some degree of scoliosis and all that goes with it plus energetic blocking down the back of the left leg >>> tightness, thickening in the fascia >>> restriction, pain and/or injury through glute, hami, calf, achilles and/or plantar fascia. I am presently writing a paper on this one. It is never too late to do something about it. While the 90 year old client with nil medial or lateral rotation of the femur in the acetabulum may not get those hips and legs to do more than swing back and forth propelling her to South Melbourne Market each market day...she may never sit cross legged again but she is able to keep upright and look straight ahead by working at it...she sort of forgot her daily exercise routine for awhile and started going downhill fast...wondered why she could not see where she was going, why it was getting harder to push the shopping jeep until she resumed her exercises and slowly became erect again. Yeah...the concept that there is no such thing as good or bad posture never occurred to me...there is a constant stream of problematic cases presenting in my clinical practice exhibiting classic poor postural characteristics that can be improved, rectified or cured by treatment, stretching and strengthening. That is pretty clear cut to me. If you want to start considering the philosophical, emotional and spiritual aspects of our work as therapists we can find all sorts of alternative meaning to what is clinical practice and life...just do not lose sight of the basics. There is such a thing as poor posture and clients are motivated to correct it because of pain or injury.

22.01.2022 I have just had an extended Messenger conversation with a much more highly trained practitioner than I about Short Right Leg Syndrome. He agrees anterior rotation of the hip functionally adjusts leg length...rotation about the SIJ causing the acetablum to rotate about a radius of approximately 120mm...moving posteriorly and superiorly, pulling the leg upwards I estimate by up to 5mm.. 21.01.2022 Short Right Leg Syndrome Cardinal Signs and Assessment Protocol in the Context of Remedial Massage Treatment Physical therapists are taught to assess structural leg length in basic training. 20.01.2022 In clinical practice, something in the order of two or three out of four clients present with structural leg length differences. The bulk are low grade with less than a 10mm discrepancy. Most commonly the right leg is shorter than the left. This is known as Short Right Leg Syndrome (SRLS) and causes a right leaning scoliosis through the spine more readily felt than seen; the right costals bulging, the left flattened. The incidence of a short left leg is rare. Most affected su...Continue reading

18.01.2022 Right Sided Lumbar Disk Bulges From early in my career I have frequently observed tightness & tenderness in the right QLs accompanied by tightness and spasming in the left glutes. It is a common pattern. Eventually I worked out the cause for thickening and tightening down the backline of the left lower limb...being anterior rotation of the hip about the SIJ >>> joint tightness blocking energy flow down the limb...eg, with one exception, every case of Plantar Fasciitis I have... sighted is accompanied by anterior hip rotation and the most common unforced football injury is a torn left hamstring. The right QL condition remained a mystery until after a spate of cases brought it front and centre in my attention. Several had medical scans revealing right sided disk bulging. What all these cases had in common was Short Right Leg Syndrome (SRLS). It then struck me the postural anomaly of a dropped right hip causing a right leaning scoliosis will open the lumber vertebrae on the right and the elevated left hip will close the lumbar vertebrae on the left. This accordian like action creates a wedge shape where the vertebral surfaces should be parallel and forces the disk out to the right. I am inclined to think this is a common cause for right sided lumbar disk bulges. The next question to consider...how common is SRLS? See more

17.01.2022 Post Massage Affects http://truelocal.com.au/business/simon-crittenden/cockatoo The 1st massage is always the most intense. Lymphatic Drainage accelerates the flow of lymphatic fluid & toxic detritus from lymphatic nodes & capillaries to the blood stream. It is common to temporarily feel unwell following this treatment. Deep Tissue Therapy stirring deep recesses of our flesh releases toxins into the blood stream and may cause feeling of unwellness until eliminated by ki...dneys. Generally occurs morning after 1st massage...drink plenty water. Tight muscles released will be sore for few days. When pain passes condition, strength & flexibility will be improved. These affects are temporary & deminish or disappear altogether as condition improves with subsequent massage treatment. It is part of the healing process. See more

16.01.2022 The three cardinal signs of a short right leg are: left hip in anterior rotation about the SIJ in the Sagittal plane; rigidity at the right hip observed tractioning from the ankle with a tight adductor longus; and mild right leaning scoliosis readily identified feeling the bulging distortion to the rib cage and over developed spinal erectors on the right. In some instances the leg length difference is so small it is not possible to detect without x-ray examination yet the car...dinal signs are magnified and easy to identify. If these signs are present, assessment for a leg length difference is justified and necessary if the client is experiencing acute symptoms. Apologies...the illustrations are not totally accurate in that hip rotation is about the SIJ, not the acetablum and the scoliosis depicted is exaggerated and not the typical mild case.

16.01.2022 Unbelievably, this needs to be said because some people do not seem to understand "Stay at home if you are unwell and get tested." The policy outlined below was put into practice many years prior to the Covid-19 pandemic but we are even more sensitive to the issue now... COLD & FLU POLICY "If clients are suffering from respiratory infections or contagious illness, appointments will be rescheduled to a later date. Risk of infecting the therapist and other attending clients is ...high. Your consideration is appreciated. Thankyou." Simon Crittenden Remedial Massage Therapist Member of Massage and Myotherapy Australia This is what it means...there is no such thing as "just" the sniffles or "just" a little cough or it is "nearly" better. If you are a diagnosed asthmatic and that makes you cough, fine...otherwise DO NOT GO TO A MASSAGE CLINIC UNTIL THE SYMPTOMS ARE ALL GONE. I do not want to be in a closed room for an extended period of time with a body shedding fucking sub-microscopic infectious viral spores that may be in the air and sticking to everything that body comes into contact with including toweling, furniture and me for that matter...massage is a contact activity...social distancing is not possible. 13.01.2022 Short Right Leg Syndrome (SRLS) is a dominant genetic trait in Homo Sapiens. It is the result of an evolutionary adaptation giving a mother and young child a greater chance of survival in prehistoric times. The two signature traits of SRLS enables baby to be be securely carried on the elevated left hip, shoulder bag of provisions securely carried on the elevated right shoulder, freeing the dominant right arm for work and defence. It can be deduced our ancestors were predominantly right handed. Otherwise, we would be seeing short left legs. We do not see short left legs.

11.01.2022 Chinese Cupping can be messy with lots of dirty glass, oil, flame...I have it set up to work for me now in the clinic...bins, stainless steel medical trolly, and a new Aldi dishwasher in the clinic laundry specifically for them. It amounts to a $1400 cupping kit.

11.01.2022 So...in short, what I say is deep chronic tightness proximal to the shoulder and torso blocking circulation distally in the arm is responsible for RSI and Carpal Tunnel injury. This is circulation of both blood and energy. In TCM philosophy it is the energetic aspect that is most important. The energetic flow leads the blood. Should energetic flow be hindered or blocked, thickening and tightening through the connective tissue results. Treating the forearm and elbow alone typically gives only limited temporary relief. Targetting shoulder, torso and arm usually resolves the condition within one to three treatment sessions. The very worst carpal tunnel case of several years pain and 24/7 numbness required four treatments. 03.01.2022 Occasionally, symptoms experienced as a result of Short Right Leg syndrome are severe and have been ongoing for years. Immediately progressing to the use of a prosthetic heel lift under the short leg is warranted. Symptoms may affect any or all of the back, neck and head and/or lower limbs. Being lumbered with wearing this device in your shoe for the rest of your life is an imposition...but most of those who have suffered for years do not hesitate to give it a try. 02.01.2022 Examining Unilateral Anterior Hip Rotation - First Cardinal Sign, SRLS It is a fact the most common hip presentation is anterior rotation of the left hip with a level right hip. It is so common I call it normal. It is not good anatomical posture but it is normally what is seen in clinical practice. Anterior rotation of the hip functionally adjusts leg length. Rotation about the SIJ in the Sagittal plane causes the head of the femur to move posteriorly and superiorly, pulling ...the leg upwards. If leg lengths are structurally even, such an action would cause a tilt in the pelvis and result in mild scoliosis toward the side demonstrating rotation. The catch is, this is not what we see in clinical practice. We are presented with left sided anterior rotation but rather than the expected left leaning pelvic tilt and left leaning scoliosis, in virtually all cases I observe a right leaning condition. This can only happen if the right leg is structurally shorter than the left by an amount greater than the functional adjustment caused by the left hip’s anterior rotation. I propose the observed unilateral hip rotation occurs when the contra-lateral leg is structurally short. We feel uncomfortable with the tilt through our pelvis caused by the structural imbalance. By some mechanism the hip of the longer leg unconsciously flops forward functionally shortening the longer leg. This is an anatomic adjustment reducing the leg length difference. Typically, we are not aware of the compensatory action. It feels more comfortable and it protects the spine. This is good but chronic hip rotation tightens the heavily bound ligamental structure and cartilage of the SIJ and can lead to other issues. This proposal is supported by my observation the postural hip anomaly will resist attempts to normalise its position through treatment and rehabilitation exercise/stretching until an adjusting prosthetic wedge is inserted beneath the heel of the structurally short leg.

Required heavy pain killers to sleep. Also had Carpal Tunnel in both arms...shooting pain down arms and totally numb hands 24/7 for two years. Had no expectation Remedial Massage would do anything for the Carpal Tunnel and barely heard me when I said, "Yes...the pain in your shoulder can be relieved and most probably will clear the Carpal Tunnel symptoms too." One treatment cleared symptoms in left hand/arm. Right shoulder was the problem shoulder...took another three sessions to clear pain and resolve the numbness on the right side. Once this outcome has been achieved it is necessary to do ongoing mobility exercises and stretches daily for an extended time. Ultimately, frequency can be reduced but never entirely ceased; particularly if still undertaking regular work activities like typing, cleaning or massage therapy that contributed to the condition in the first place. There is a lot more to say about this case such as the first treatment was worse than the affliction. However, after a few days when the after effects of the treatment subsided and she realised how much better she was, she came back for more. The gristle like quality of tightness through the sinews of her shoulder and torso was not buried out of sight deep in the tissues as it normally is...hers was clearly evident through back, chest and the ribcage under arms. While a very good outcome was achieved in a few sessions, I have heard she has had a relapse and is now considering surgery. This client has lifestyle issues and I'm guessing not inclined to do regular rehab training sessions. I note your comment you have "had yours done." I presume that means you have had surgery. In some cases symptoms are not entirely relieved. Surgery does not treat the cause. The advice I give above is still applicable...although the "hanging off the rafters in the garage before driving to work" may not be possible for you now due to reduced grip strength as a result of the surgery. It is unfortunate medico's do not know the power of massage and physical therapy. Obviously, with the benefit of hindsight, the proper order of things should have been to ask this forum prior to surgery what do we do to treat Carpal Tunnel. Not come to us after getting surgery enquiring about recovery time. For that, ask your surgeon.
