25.01.2022 This is a good page from the Department of Home Affairs about visas and visa conditions in relation to the Coronavirus COVID-19 crisis. For example:

25.01.2022 The Australian Government will be giving the Australian Red Cross funding to deliver emergency support to people on temporary visas. It is only a one-off and l...imited amount to help people with essentials like food and medicine. Please don't expect a weekly payment or anything like that. If you don't have a job and your savings are running out. If you don't have any other income or financial support. You should email the red cross and wait for them to contact you. Remember they do not have the money yet so it will take some time to get an answer. If you are a student, please contact your university or institution and see if they are offering any assistance. I have heard from my students that universities are offering between $100 and $500 for their students. I know these amounts are small but every little bit helps. Please don't feel embarrassed about needing assistance and don't wait till the last moment to start asking for it. I will bring you more ideas on where to access help when I hear more news. https://www.redcross.org.au//help-for-migrants-in-transiti.

25.01.2022 Try to answer this question in 2 minutes. Remember there are 4 dot points that you need to cover. I normally suggest 30 seconds for each dot point, which translates to about 4 or 5 short sentences for each. (These are only suggestions so please other teachers keep your pants on )

25.01.2022 The IELTS exam has a writing component which consists of two tasks and takes 60 minutes to complete. Students have to write 150 words for task 1 and 250 words for task 2. Many of my students are writing English for the first time in a long and they have forgotten the capitalization rules in English. Here is some information to help you with this issue. https://www.masterenglish.com.au//ielts-grammar-capitaliza

22.01.2022 RENT REDUCTION Here is some advice about your rent and leases. Many people are losing their jobs especially in hospitality, bars, cafes, restaurants, shops an...d many others. These are the jobs temporary residents do. If you have already lost your job because of Coronavirus, you can contact your agent or your landlord directly and ask for a rent reduction. If you haven't lost your job DO NOT DO IT. The agent Will ask you for proof that you can't work. I wrote this letter for you to copy and paste. To the property manager. Re: Put your full address here As you know, the coronavirus crisis is causing many businesses to close and many job losses. Unfortunately, I have also lost my job because of this crisis. Since I am a temporary resident in Australia, I cannot receive any government assistance through Centrelink, and I do not qualify for the government's jobkeeper package. I wish to continue renting this apartment, but I am finding it difficult to pay the current rent without income from my job. Can you please ask the landlord to help me with a rent reduction for the next six months? I understand that this is a difficult time for everyone, and the landlord has their own expenses and payments to make. I hope the government and banks can work together to help the owners in the same way I am asking them to help me. Please contact me on the phone number or email address below to discuss my request. Thank you for your consideration. Your name mobile number email address

18.01.2022 It is very frustrating that a decision has not been made about supporting temporary visa holders or about freezing rents.

15.01.2022 Here is some information from the acting minister for immigration about temporary visa holders. With thanks to my students Hui and Robert for sharing this infor...mation with us. I think this is a very bad message from our government which says thank you for coming and giving us your energy, time, and money but now you have to go home because we don't want to give you any help. If you can give more of your energy, hard work, or save our sick in hospitals then you are welcome to stay longer. https://minister.homeaffairs.gov.au//Coronavirus-and-Tempo

14.01.2022 Hi, some of you asked me if temporary residents and international students can apply to get access to their super early. The short answer is YES.

08.01.2022 The Australian government is meeting today with all the State governments (NSW, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania) to discuss h...ow they can help us with rent. This is a very big problem because the law for rent is a State law but they want to give some rules for the whole country. I will tell you what they decide as soon as they tell us. See more

08.01.2022 I think this response from the NSW government is not enough to help renters. The link below takes you to the Tenants Union of NSW and explains what your rights ...are and what you can do to seek a reduction but I will tell you what I think here. Write a letter to your landlord or their agent asking for a rent reduction. Make sure your letter is polite and explains in detail how much of your income you lost. In my case, I lost 80% of my income. Don't say that you can't pay any rent or that you will only pay $100 or $200 per week when your rent is normally $500 or $700. This will make the landlord upset and they will think you don't care about their situation. Remember that landlords also have to pay bills. They have to pay the bank mortgage (loan) as well as land taxes, agent fees, water and council rates and any repairs your place needs. Let them decide how much they can offer you and start your negotiation. Negotiating is not simply giving one number and stop. I heard many landlords are offering only $20 or $30 discount. That is not enough. Continue to negotiate politely and firmly without being rude or angry. Good luck. https://www.tenants.org.au//what-you-need-know-covid-19-ev

07.01.2022 I was asked to share this petition by the organiser. She is one of the many Australians who think the way our government is treating temporary residents is unfair and wrong. Let's see just how many people share our view.

01.01.2022 This article is from the ABC news channel. The Australian government announced that they will pay extra money to Australians who are unemployed. This is called... the Job Seeker Allowance. unfortunately, it is not available to temporary residents but some people are arguing that it should. Many Australian think that international students and migrant workers are going through this crisis together with us and that we should help them. As the saying goes, "We are all in the same boat". https://www.abc.net.au//coronavirus-migrant-worke/12085936
