19.01.2022 Matriarch Set captured by an audience member moments after the last scene. Beautiful lighting work thankyou to the amazing @qpac technical crew and my mum and sister @miimiandjiinda for their exquisite artwork throughout the show. It’s gonna to take me a few days to come from such an amazing, spirit strengthening experience. An absolute highlight of my career and a #dreamcometrue #matriarch #cremorne #clancestry #qpac @nadsie73 @atqpac @ QPAC

17.01.2022 As children of a single parent/stolen generation survivor and growing up in poverty we have experienced our fair share of challenges but big shifts are happening for us Gumbaynggirr Jiindas (sisters) and Miimi (mother) through the healing nature of our culture and the platforms we have created to express it I couldn’t be prouder of my lil sister and mum watching in awe at all their hard work pay off with the phenomenal success! and Im so excited to have @miimiandjiinda images of country projected on stage for my next Matriarch season as I bring our ancestors to life and continue the healing through the generations @miimiandjiinda @atqpac #clancestry #jiindas #Gumbaynggirrsisters #art #culture #healing @ Nambucca, New South Wales, Australia

14.01.2022 Greenwood’s performance is relentlessly powerful. Her physical discipline, and her emotional range, insist that we are engaged and moved, by her honest expressions about life for Indigenous peoples in Australia Review by Suzy Wrong. @Instaguchi

09.01.2022 To say Greenwood’s performance was captivating would be an understatement. Her commitment to every persona and emotion was breathtakingly powerful, sharing moments of unspeakable sorrow with those of child-like euphoria. One particularly moving moment showed Greenwood flickering between an Indigenous child and an abusive nun, never letting her characterisation of one bleed into the other. Her agility between not only roles but emotions was a testament to her incredible abili...ties. I was absolutely engulfed by her grief, her joy and her spirit, sharing silent tears with those who surrounded me. In the final moment of the piece, the lights dimmed and I felt a communal breath taken by those who had just witnessed her performance. 08.01.2022 "It has been a long journey to return here to QPAC’s Cremorne Theatre to share my family’s story. I remember sitting in the audience of this very theatre eighteen years ago: I was a young drama student seeing a brand new Aboriginal one-woman show called Box the Pony by the incredible Leah Purcell. I had never seen theatre like that before. I felt so inspired, and wanted to shout from the audience, Now that’s what I want to do Box the Pony was a huge revelation to me as an e...merging artist. I had never seen our unique cultural ways portrayed like that on stage before. In my graduating year, I wrote and performed a short solo piece called Burri Burri Woman, about being the eldest daughter of a stolen generation survivor and my struggles as a fair skin Aboriginal girl. I went on to carve out an acting career inhabiting all types of characters on stage and screen, and growing and learning as an artist on the way. Yet that niggling feeling I had - to get back and do that one-woman show - persisted. It was unfinished business. I knew this was my cultural responsibility: my ancestors, my matriarchs in the spirit world, were guiding me. I had been living in Los Angeles for about four years when I began getting signs and messages. It is time, my girl, my ancestors were telling me. You gotta get home now. I knew I had to continue telling my story for the purpose of my own healing, for my family’s healing, and to contribute to the healing of the nation. So I went home and spent time with my mum and my aunties. Over many cups of tea we yarned about the old days what life was like back then, heroic stories about nan and gran, bush life, mission life, and the orphanage days. After capturing as many stories and memories as I could, my writing partner, Oliver and I had a deadline of two months to craft a Three Act Play for the 2018 Melbourne Fringe Festival. The first time I performed Matriarch was the most scared I had ever been on stage. I remember calling on nan and gran to help me through, then suddenly I could feel them right by my side, calming my nerves and giving me strength. That matriarchal strength is what this show is about @sandygreenwoodofficial See more

03.01.2022 Sandy Greenwood sent us this image of her favourite Miimi & Jiinda painting, ahead of her upcoming show Matriarch. Here's what she had to say about it: "It de...picts the birthing caves on our matriarchal ancestral country. These birthing caves can be found on the beaches in Nambucca Heads and Valla and it’s where I come home to sit, reflect and heal. I often think of the resilience of my matriarchs and draw on their strength at difficult times of my life. This image is particularly poignant for me because my Gran who I bring to life in the Matriarch was one of the main cultural midwifes of the Gumbaynggirr nation in the 1940’s, a time when Aboriginal women where not allowed in the hospitals. Gran delivered babies all over Nambucca Heads Valley including some of her own grandchildren. These caves are sacred and healing and embody the strength and beauty of Gumbaynggirr women." Matriarch will be at QPAC as part of Clancestry, 27 - 30 November. atqp.ac/36e0DgU
