The two main players in the home improvement market are steel and timber. Of course there are many variations of both so for the purpose of this article weve done some homework for you on colorbond steel vs regular structural timber. Designs Steel is Stronger, so you generally you need less of it. This allows for less posts and beams and a cleaner, uncluttered look from underneath. Steel is generally specifically engineered for your home. Timber spans less for the same sized section so more materials are required to achieve the same results. This results in a heavier load being placed on the house and it can be a little busy looking from underneath. Timber is usually designed using span tables so are generally not specifically engineered for your home. Steel is straighter and stays that way, has a uniform finish and can be available in a range of modern colours. Colorbond steel in particular can have a high gloss finish not seen with powder coated sections. Timber can twist and warp over time, has knots, seeps, cracks and splits and although in its natural form it looks warming, most people paint over it to reduce the maintenance associated with natural timbers. Steel is tough and designed for Australian conditions and will look better for longer than timber. Cost Upfront, steel is more expensive than timber - to buy and build. But what steel loses upfront it makes up for over time very little upkeep, longer warranties and it does look better for longer. An outdoor entertainment area is a long term investment and you want it to last the test of time. Unfortunately, timber just doesnt stack up.
