25.01.2022 Joot came back for a recheck last week, his leg is healing really well and he is walking without a limp. He can start to exercise a bit more vigorously now. Balaclava Vets are open 8am - 6pm weekdays & Saturdays, 9am 6pm Sundays and Public Holidays excluding Christmas Day. 23.01.2022 Paris is a 14year old Pomeranian. One day during the week she suddenly had a lot of trouble breathing and exhibited a purple colour to her gums which led her owner to think she was choking on a dog biscuit. Upon examination it became clear that this was not the case. Her bloated, gas filled stomach was creating abdominal pressure that did not allow her to fill her lungs, hard to see as she is very fluffy! She had a mild GDV ( a condition we discussed a few weeks ago on this ...page). Despite her age Paris survived surgery and made a quick recovery. She is a very small dog to suffer this condition. Below are some xrays from her episode and re-presentation of a diagram explaining the rotation of the stomach during a GDV episode. Balaclava Vets are open 8am - 6pm weekdays & Saturdays, 9am 6pm Sundays and Public Holidays excluding Christmas Day. To access our After Hours Emergency service call 07 40542166 and press 1 to talk directly to the vet. If you cannot get through on the landline, try the mobile 0481 603 367

22.01.2022 Tiny is a little pup from Thursday Island. When she was 1-2 weeks old she got stood on by her mum and had her elbow dislocated. With no vet care to access she has had a dislocated elbow for a few weeks and that has damaged the joint surfaces irreparably. The area also got infected a few weeks ago which required a long antibiotic course. To make her more comfortable and mobile we have fused the elbow joint in an operation called an arthrodesis with 4 small screws. She won't be able to bend the elbow but she will be mobile and pain free. Balaclava Vets are open 8am - 6pm weekdays & Saturdays, 9am - 6pm Sundays and Public Holidays excluding Christmas Day. To access our After Hours Emergency service call 07 40542166 and press 1 to talk directly to the vet. If you cannot get through on the landline, try the mobile 0481 603 367

22.01.2022 Despite the current issues with COVID19 we are operating almost normally. We have a reception area at the back of the clinic as our current hygeine protocol demands only one client at a time inside the the clinic and a complete disinfection of the areas the client has visited before letting the next client inside - a hugetask which we do not have the staff numbers for. Care for pets is secure within the confines of the building so there shouldn't be any escapees. Balaclava Vets are open 8am - 6pm weekdays, 9am - 6pm Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays excluding Christmas Day. To access our After Hours Emergency service call 07 40542166 and press 1 to talk directly to the vet.

22.01.2022 Leroy here is a bit of lad, he loves chasing his ball, bolting around the park with his mates and swimming. Unfortunately he has a condition which is very common in dogs much smaller than him known as Medial Luxating Patella (MLP). This has caused him a lot of discomfort recently in both knees. To stop his discomfort he had surgery on the Left knee a few months ago and his Right knee yesterday. This surgery essentially deepens the groove in the femur the patella runs in and... realigns the insertion point of the ligament that wraps around the patella with that groove which is known as the trochlea. Leroy has recovered well from his surgery and has a few weeks rest ahead of him before he starts his second rehabilitation period. Balaclava Vets are open 8am - 6pm weekdays & Saturday, 9am - 6pm Sundays and Public Holidays excluding Christmas Day. To access our After Hours Emergency service call 07 40542166 and press 1 to talk directly to the vet. If you cannot get through on the landline, try the mobile 0481 603 367.

21.01.2022 Moose had a challenging day at the office today. In addition to being desexed we performed a procedure called a gastropexy on him. The purpose of this procedure is to stop the stomach from being able to rotate within the abdomen. We do this by making an full thickness incision in the abdominal wall to access the abdominal cavity, then after locating the stomach we secure it to the abdominal muscles and close the wound , leaving a small skin wound that heals quickly. Stomac...h rotation is the principal mechanical cause of Gastric (stomach) Dilation (bloating) & Volvulus (rotation) or as is more simply known GDV. Bloating of the stomach drives rotation due the assymetric shape of the canine stomach, once rotation occurs the duodenum and oesophagus are twisted as well locking the stomach off exacerbating and accelerating the process. As pressure grows in the stomach and abdomen blood circulation is stopped, the ability to breathe is lost and the dog dies. This can happen in as little as 20 minutes from first signs. A gastropexy has a 95% chance of stopping an episode of GDV. So in big deep chested dog's like Moose the surgery is a very effective means of preventing a tragic death like that of his brother Zeke, a 9 year old Swiss Shepherd who died of GDV 2 weeks ago. 19.01.2022 Gracie from Bush Dogs had a setback in her recovery on the repair of her broken leg from 3-4 years ago. Quick recap Gracie broke her leg as a young dog, when it healed by itself it was very bent causing her wrist to be very twisted when walking or wt bearing. We straightened it 2 months ago but had to remove the external brace because the pins became loose. The bone had not fully healed so unsupported, the bone began to bend back to the original shape of the leg we were tryi...ng to correct. This week we performed a further surgery cutting her radius into segments and reorienting them so her leg is straight again. A following post has a video of her walking the day after surgery.

19.01.2022 Opening day fun at Doggy Daycare for these doggies.

19.01.2022 Boomer was 12 weeks old when he ate a nail. Luckily he was seen in the act and his owner was able to bring him straight in to the clinic. After X-rays to confirm the nail was still inside him we gave an emetic (drug to cause vomiting). Boomer looks a little worse for wear due to the sedative side effects of the emetic. Fortunately because of the quick action of his owners getting him into the clinic th we nail came up with no problems.

19.01.2022 Spike 2 months ago

19.01.2022 Spike the Bushdog came back yesterday for the main part of his treatment for heartworm. He received two injections 24 hours apart to kill the worms we detected 2 months ago. During this two month period he has been receiving medication to reduce the inflammation the worms cause inside his chest and increase the effectiveness of the injections in killing the worms. Since we first saw him he has put on 14kg, had his eyelid, teeth, demodectic mange and skin tumors fixed along with the obligatory desexing. His mange will take a little more time to be fully resolved but his health has improved by a large measure in a short time.

18.01.2022 Tinker has had a tough few weeks she broke her back leg 2 weeks ago running around in her house in the middle of the night. Attempts were made by other vets in town to fix the fracture with splints and bandages but this was not effective. Facing amputation as the advised treatment Tinker's owners bought her in to Balaclava Vets for a second opinion. We were able apply an external fixation device to her leg to support it while the fracture heals. As the fracture was two weeks... old we did not attempt perfect realignment of the fragments as this can compromise blood supply to the fracture site. Balaclava Vets are open 8am - 6pm weekdays, Saturday, Sundays and Public Holidays excluding Christmas Day until the COVID19 restrictions end. To access our After Hours Emergency service call 07 40542166 and press 1 to talk directly to the vet. If you cannot get through on the landline, try the mobile 0481 603 367.

17.01.2022 Luna was running around the back yard a few weeks ago when she jumped up in the air. In doing this she twisted her tibia and it fractured, this is an unlucky but not uncommon injury in dogs, I have treated two this year. It is impossible to prevent. We put a pin into the middle of the tibia and wires around the bone to stabilise the fragments. If Luna can stay quiet for a few weeks everything should heal well. Balaclava Vets are open 8am - 6pm weekdays & Saturdays, 9am 6pm Sundays and Public Holidays excluding Christmas Day. 11.01.2022 LETS TALK ABOUT PARALYSIS TICKS! Unfortunately tick season is in full swing at the moment and we have been inundated with paralysis tick patients These critte...rs cause paralysis by injecting neurotoxins via their saliva into the host which not only affects the muscles involved in standing and walking, but also those involved breathing and in swallowing which left untreated will ultimately lead to death. All creepy crawlies on your pets are unwanted but it is especially important to know how to identify paralysis ticks. The best way to tell them apart are by the legs, paralysis ticks have legs near their head in a V shape where as the bush/brown or cattle ticks have the legs spaced out around the body. Here is a handy rhyme to remember it: Spaced Out Arms - Do No Harm Legs Near The Head - Get the Vet out of Bed! Paralysis ticks are an emergency so its important to recognize the signs, these include: Lack of coordination Weakness Collapse Vomiting or retching Change of bark or meow Difficulty breathing If you do find a tick on your pet, remove it immediately with tweezers or a tick-removing device, by gently twisting or rotating the tick off and avoiding squeezing its body. After you remove the tick, make sure to keep it and bring it to your vet for identification. Even once a paralysis tick has been removed a dog or cat that was previously unaffected start to show signs of tick paralysis up to 72 hours after removal or if they are already showing signs to deteriorate further over the same time frame. If your pet is showing any signs of tick paralysis, seek veterinary attention immediately! Preventative treatment is crucial in protecting your furry family members, so if your dog or cat is not up to date with with their parasite prevention now is the perfect time to get on top of it! There is a great range of products to choose from including the Nexguard range, the Bravecto range (which also includes cats), Revolution Plus and Seresto. just to name a few! If youre not sure which product is right for you ask us! Contact our friendly team about our Best For Pets program where you can get 10% off our parasite prevention products! Did you know that Balaclava Vet is open 7 days a week and has a Vet and Vet Nurse on call for emergencies 24/7-365 days a year? All you have to do is call (07) 4054 2166 and press 1 to speak to a Vet!

10.01.2022 Grass seeds are a big problem at this time of year. This is a dog Jason treated today. 09.01.2022 Hi everyone, after a bit of Facebook hiatus due the virus restrictions reducing our staffing levels, we are back to a full team. As a result we have a little more time to smell the roses and do some posts more regularly. This is Buddy the border collie, he is only 4yrs old and loves to run, jump, twist and run again. He was hard at it last week and ruptured his cruciate ligament. Yesterday we performed a surgical repair and joint clean up - resection of the frayed remnants o...f his anterior cruciate ligament and removing the portion of his meniscus (cartilage) that was damaged by the instability of the knee after the cruciate ligament ruptured. We then performed a Triple Tibial Osteotomy (TTO) to BIOMECHANICALLY stabilise the joint. Buddy was very happy and using his leg to walk this morning after surgery yesterday. He has a month of strict cage rest and laser therapy, followed by 3 months of rehab ahead of him but he's handling it with a positive attitude.

08.01.2022 The incidence of Heartworm Disease is on the rise again in Cairns. We have treated 30 cases so far this year. Heartworm Disease is spread by mosquitoes. The larvae enter the mosquito when it has a blood meal from an infected dog, over a period of 3 weeks the larvae develop inside the mosquito to a point where they can be transmitted to another dog when the mosquito feeds. Obviously over a 3 week period a mosquito can travel a long way so the worm infection can be spread a lon...g way. Once in the new dog it takes the worm larva 6-8 months to develop to adulthood where it resides in the pulmonary arteries of the host dog(cats can also be infected). Apart from the physical blockage to the flow of blood, the presence of the worm in the arteries causes inflammation, vessel thickening, thrombosis (inappropriate blood clotting) and fluid build in the lungs. These factors combine to make it much harder for the heart to pump blood through the lungs to be oxygenated and results in exercise intolerance as well as premature heart failure in affected animals. Heartworm prevention is cheap, effective and safe, it is the best means of protecting your dog or cat from Heartworm. Once infected, killing the worms is multi-step process that takes 4-5 months and costs $500-$1200 depending on the size of the dog. 02.01.2022 Meet Hammer, he is 5 months old. Unfortunately he has prolapsed third eyelid glands in both eyes, this condition is sometimes called cherry eye. In Hammer's case his third eyelid glands were interfering with his vision. Prolapsed third eyelid glands often cause a reduction in tear secretion and dry eye. We performed a surgery technique known as several anchoring in which the glands is popped back under eye and anchored with nonabsorbable suture material. The pictures below sh...ow Hammer before and after surgery and a diagram of the anatomy of a dog's eye from side on.
