24.01.2022 The theme has been announced for Book Week 2021. The Children’s Book Council of Australia has announced it will be Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. Book Week will be celebrated from August 21-27.... Each year since 1945 the CBCA has brought children and books together across Australia through CBCA Book Week. During this time schools and public libraries spend a week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. Classroom teachers, teacher librarians and public librarians create colourful displays, develop activities, run competitions and tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading. You will often see parades with students dressed as their favourite book character. To find out more about Book Week https://www.cbca.org.au/cbca-book-week Artwork by Shaun Tan.

17.01.2022 Congratulations to Dr Don Henderson on the publication of his new book. Don spent a month in complete peace on a May Gibbs Creative Time Residential Fellowship in Canberra and attributes the use of this time to the final publication of his book. Pangea and almost back ... In this time-traveling adventure, Freddie O’Toole is searching for his father, who has disappeared in a plane crash several years earlier. His guardian sends Freddie on a secret expedition to Timor where Freddie and his crusty manservant, Gruntenguile, are chased by Snapahuti headhunters. After a narrow escape, they discover portals that take them back to Pangea and then to ancient Africa where Freddie becomes a contestant in the Tournament of Blood. He meets the leader of master aliens, the Zynes, who unlocks the secret of his missing father and a dastardly deal between the Zynes and the Axis Powers in World War Two. Full-throttle dieselpunk adventure! What a sensational ride Pangea is . . . as it twists and turns, careers around wild unexpected corners from the very start, yet is consummately controlled by the invisible strings of [Henderson's] narration. I love the synthesis of every conceivable thing in the mix hints of Lord of The Rings, Star Wars, epic classical heroes (a la Raiders of the Lost Ark), legends and myths, esoterica, science, para- science, geology, geography, anthropology, history, social iconography, bread and circuses, time travel and . . . Freddy! Kingsley Allen A wild adventure ride packed with non-stop action, intrigue, extraordinary creatures and memorable characters. Great fun! 12.01.2022 We're very excited to announce our partnership with Street Library Australia! Street libraries are colourful cubby houses for books planted in your front yard. ...They invite neighbours and passersby to discover a new book, share a love of reading and feel connected with their local community. In the words of our Street Library friends: 'At a time when so much of our lives have become digitised, these tiny vestibules of literary happiness are able to surprise and delight the lives of those who stumble across them and the books that line their shelves.' Thanks to Street Library, each CBCA Branch will be giving one lucky Member their very own street library to install and decorate in time for CBCA Book Week in Term 4. We can't wait to see these little book cubbies in situ! For more information and to buy your very own Street Library, head to their website at: https://streetlibrary.org.au/ #streetlibrary

08.01.2022 Banksia Men Alongside her sturdy, bare-bottomed gumnut babies, with their huge, transfixed blue eyes, hover always the Banksia men. ''Sitting on almost every branch of Banksia trees,'' write the authors of May Gibbs's new biography, ''she pictured ugly, wicked little men, the central dramatic conflict that haunted the miniature world of the gumnut babies.'' 05.01.2022 May Gibbs was born in England, emigrating with her family to Australia in 1881 when she was four. She was educated in Perth and London and pursued a career as an illustrator and writer, settling in Sydney in 1913. Here she began to draw her distinctive gumnut and blossom babies, and in 1916 she published Gumnut Babies, the first book in which they appear as characters. The books were an immediate success. Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, Bib and Bub, Little Ragged Blossom, and the Banksia Men became for many a part of the experience of Australian childhood. Quote from A hundred years of gumnut babies, 23 January 2013 by Julia Robinson.

02.01.2022 Congratulations to our 2018 Ian Wilson Memorial Fellowship recipient Amelia Mellor on the release of her new book. . The following is a repost from @dymocks234 A tiny snippet around Amelia Mellor’s brilliant new release: a brief glimpse of the E.W. Cole of the Cole’s Book Arcade in The Grandest Bookshop in the World!... Apart from being the creator of the Arcade, Cole was a man of his times, a visionary and idealist. His passion was the pursuit of knowledge and education for all, and his hopes were for a society free of discrimination and racism so much so that he produced booklets and pamphlets in support of the same. Cole was not always a bookseller having engaged in farming and botanical exploration prior to arriving in Melbourne in 1852 to join the Goldrush but opened his first bookshop in 1865, then his Arcade in 1874 (more on this in another post!). His Arcade grew into one of the largest book-related businesses in Australia, including a publishing arm that included numerous horticultural titles and popular titles such as the much-loved Cole’s Funny Picture Book series (No.1 and No.2 compiled by E.W. Cole himself, and No.3 & No.4 by later family members). The Grandest Bookshop in the World is pictured here with a copy of Cole’s Funny Picture Book No. 3, first produced in 1951 (and kindly loaned to us by one of our staff, Emma), and also on a spread in the book that tells a story of The Magician’s Messenger an apt and fitting background! If you haven't delved into The Grandest Bookshop in the World yet, grab your copy soon - phone or email our team on 96630900 or [email protected], or Click & Collect via www.dymocks.com.au. See more
