25.01.2022 Mazza Wine Events have been working on a side project for the last few weeks - the first Bunbury Wine Wander! Eleven Bunbury venues have paired up with eleven wineries from the Geographe Region to create a series of pop-up bars on Saturday 7th November 2020. Wine Wanderers receive a tasting glass and a map and hit the streets on their own self-guided wine tasting adventure! It’s going to be a great afternoon with some fantastic wines to try. Delicious meals and tapas dishes will be available to purchase at every stop along the way. Get a group together and grab some tickets while you can. www.bunburywinewander.com

22.01.2022 Always a surprise on the farm.... we’re up early ready to start picking the Touriga Nacional and there’s a commotion - the cattle are chasing a stag across the paddock! Just managed to film him going through the fence. If you zoom in you can see him better.

20.01.2022 Can't wait until the next Bunbury Wine Wander!

18.01.2022 The last pick of the season - our Touriga Nacional -was a real family affair! Pictured are Dave’s dad, John, at the front, Dave (in his moon boot, no less!), awesome brother-in-law Graham, and our niece Allegra- the gun-picker! We’d all like a nice, long holiday after this challenging season... but there’s too much to do! We have some exciting new things coming that we’ll be jumping into now Vintage 2021 is done and dusted - keep an eye out.

15.01.2022 If you're going to have a fireside chat, do it Mazza Wines - Western Australia style - with a good pouring of their Touriga Nacional! A bouquet of gently spi...ced black fruit leads into a particularly well-structured palate of dark berries, finishing with fine, savoury tannins. If you don't speak wine, you need only read between the lines - it's a treat! Mazza don't have a cellar door, but they offer free delivery anywhere in Australia in their online store. The temptation is real on a chilly, winter evening - give in to a little retail therapy from the couch, we say! Visit www.mazza.com.au for a wander...

12.01.2022 In addition to his love of wine Dave also loves photography. Back in 2003, Dave and 23 of his fellow photography students started the 24 Project, documenting every hour of New Years Day for 24 years. And now 24 In Lockdown documents a day during the Covid 19 pandemic. This is the link to the BBC article showing the second set of images in the series - see if you can spot the Mazza Vineyard! https://www.bbc.com/news/in-pictures-52329741

12.01.2022 It’s TWENTY years since we bought the farm. One hundred picturesque acres of rolling paddocks, with beautiful pockets of bushland, rusted-out fences, two small dams and some lovely north-east facing slopes - perfect for planting vines. When you’ve got a farm you get pretty focused on all the things that need doing. You don’t often sit back and think about all the things you’ve done. We’ve been looking through boxes of old photos (remember when you actually used to get them ...printed!) and thought we’d share some before and after shots with you over the next few weeks. Before (Dec 2000) One of the first photos we took of the farm. Although we bought the property at the end of June 2000 we didn’t actually see it until December when we came back from the UK. Yep - bought it sight unseen - but with the blessing of Dave’s parents and his uncles who all walked over it and gave a big thumbs up. Now: (Jul 2020) Taken this morning during a break in the rain. Looking across the newly enlarged dam to the House Block vines - the original vineyard planted in 2002 with all six varieties side by side - Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, Graciano, Bastardo, Sousão and Tinta Cão. The cottage (relocated from Harvey in 2001) and shed (2000!) are hidden behind the trees on the right.

06.01.2022 Happy 5th birthday to Market Eating House! It's going to be a fantastic feast. https://marketeatinghouse.com.au

06.01.2022 Taking a quick break from pruning to delight in the reflections on the dam..... Now back to work!

06.01.2022 Thrilled to receive this recognition. Thanks to Huon Hooke, Bob Campbell and The Real Review team. Cheers!

04.01.2022 Why did you decide to plant Spanish and Portuguese varieties? We were living in London when we bought the farm in 2000 and intended to plant mainstream French varieties like Merlot and Shiraz. But London opened up a huge world of wine to us with wonderful bars and restaurants serving fantastic wines from all over Europe. So our ideas changed. And our travels changed those ideas even more. Dave fell in love with Touriga Nacional and Bastardo on a trip to Porto (for their fl...avours and versatility to make both Port and delicious table wines). Anne was smitten with Tempranillo so we visited Rioja - and then Graciano was added to the list too. When it came time to plant the vineyard we realised we wanted to make the kind of wines we liked to drink. Which meant we needed to plant the varieties that made those wines. No-one had ever planted those varieties in our region before so we hesitated. And did a bit more research. We discovered that Porto and Rioja are climatically similar to Donnybrook with similar rainfall and sunlight hours - and then one line from Dr John Gladstones suggested that Donnybrook would be an excellent location to grow varieties for fortified wines EUREKA! We decided to give it a go. So next trip back to WA we went went searching for cuttings of Iberian varieties and found the six we have today - Tempranillo, Graciano, Touriga Nacional, Bastardo, Tinta Cão and Sousão. And why no whites? Well - we couldn’t find any white Spanish or Portuguese varieties to propagate back in 2001. We do have a white variety growing now - but that’s another very interesting story...
