24.01.2022 As part of McClelland’s education initiatives this year, we set up a relationship with RMIT University Media undergraduate students over a 16-week period in Semester 2, 2020. The partnership aimed to develop our hybrid programming capacity into an online space. Unable to visit the gallery and sculpture park due to the second lockdown in Melbourne the RMIT students worked with staff virtually on getting an understanding of our unique Australian bush environment and the sculptu...re collection. After an unusual, limited, yet productive year working remotely, we are now excited to share a group of selected video works from RMIT students with you this week. -- Tianjin Shi produced this video work. The concept focused on exploring the texture of the sculpture. The aim was to reveal the whole sculpture at the end and create an element of surprise and mystery for the audience. 24.01.2022 We are excited to announce that McClelland will be re-opening its gates for visitors on Wednesday 2 December. We are looking forward to finally sharing the much-anticipated exhibition ‘Inside Out: Space and Process’ with you, presenting the practices of Anne-Marie May and the late Erwin Fabian; along with the initial outdoor instalment of ‘Site and Sound: Sonic art as ecological practice’, an exhibition that invites audiences to consider the importance of listening as a means... towards a better understanding of the urgent and complex environmental issues facing our planet. To help visitors navigate the sculpture park and gallery safely, we will be introducing some important measures to support public health and the safety of visitors, volunteers, and staff, including timed-entry booking to McClelland, maintaining a rigorous cleaning schedule, and limiting numbers within the galleries. We will also be asking visitors to wear a face mask, practice social distancing, and encouraging cashless payments. Further information about McClelland’s reopening is available on the McClelland website. Timed-entry bookings will be available to book online from 25 November. We look forward to enjoying the summer with you at McClelland! #McClellandSculptureParkandGallery #WelcomeBack #SummerAtMcClelland Image: McClelland Sculpture Park+Gallery, Photo Mark Chew See more

21.01.2022 Happy National Volunteer Week! We are so grateful for the wonderful team of volunteers that currently support us at McClelland, and all of those who have supported us in the past. We could not do what we do without them! Since McClelland's inception, 50 years ago, volunteers have played a vital role in the development, maintenance, and day to day running of the sculpture park and gallery.... You will see our dedicated volunteers assisting across McClelland's front of house, with education programs and groups, events, and tour guiding in the sculpture park. This week we especially celebrate and thank them for their generosity, time, knowledge, and experience! #NVW2021

21.01.2022 On this day in 1969 the first foundation stone for McClelland gallery was laid. Designed by architects Munro and Sargeant, the gallery building took two years to build, with much hard work and toil by many volunteers to clear the land of weeds, rubbish and scrub. The Premier of Victoria at the time, Sir Henry Bolte, officially opened the completed building on 3May 1971. The Gallery underwent significant changes in 1997 when it closed for two years for extensive refurbishment.... The architects Williams Boag designed the new exhibition spaces, loading and storage facilities, study and conservation areas, administration and catering services. They maintained the integrity of the original Munro and Sargeant design, and the extensions mesh seamlessly with the original modernist building. Most recently, architect Kerstin Thompson designed the Sarah & Baillieu Myer Education Pavilion and Graham Family Terrace, and these additions opened in early 2019. 20.01.2022 Peter Schipperheyn’s large scale figurative sculpture ‘Torso Femminile’ is carved from white Carrara marble, representing the enduring classical carving tradition of the Mediterranean region through the depiction of the human form. The large sculpture presents associations of antiquity through its form and material. The raw edges and untouched underside of the sculpture give a sense of power within humanity. Schipperheyn speaks of sculpture as ‘the feeling for the pur...pose of form’, and comments that ‘tradition is the conversation which stretches across time; it is a conversation about what it is to be a human being’. Through the means of classical sculpture, Schipperheyn transcends time, bringing the vitality of the classical era into the contemporary. 20.01.2022 We are looking forward to welcoming visitors back to McClelland from next Wednesday 2 December, after many months. Some important changes have been made to the way we are welcoming visitors. To assist McClelland with the costs of implementing a safe and welcoming environment, adult visitors will be charged a $6 Booking Fee. McClelland Members and Children up to 18 years are exempt from the Booking Fee. As a not-for-profit organisation, McClelland relies largely on the donat...ions of visitors to help us do what we do: conserve and build the collection, curate inspiring exhibitions and public programs, and care for the beautiful sculpture park and bushland setting for all to enjoy. The $6 Booking Fee will help alleviate the additional costs of operations implemented for McClelland’s re-opening and is expected to apply for the next twelve months. 18.01.2022 A reminder that McClelland’s indoor galleries are closed for the installation of the indoor component of current exhibition ‘Site & Sound: Sonic art as ecological practice’. While the indoor installations are not open for public view until 27 January, we invite you to explore the sculpture park where you can experience the initial outdoor instalments of the exhibition, and of course the permanent outdoor collection of over 100 sculptures. A creative summer program for a...ll ages and abilities also commences this week. Whether it be the roar of bushfires; the creak of fragmenting glaciers; silence where there used to be bird song; or the hum of cicadas, our comprehension of sounds can lead to an intuitive understanding of the ecological issues confronting us. 15.01.2022 Louise Paramor was the recipient of the The McClelland Award for her work 'Top shelf' in 2010 and the sculpture remains a vibrant part of McClelland's permanent outdoor collection today. Paramor explained that: In my sculptural work of recent years, I have been preoccupied with industrial plastic objects, and have presented them in a variety of assembled structures, each with the linking title, 'Jam Session'. In 'Top shelf' the arrangement of the plastic objects has bee...n formalised through the addition of a large steel platform to contain and elevate the ensemble. Standing tall, loud with saccharine colour and packed with ubiquitous form, the 'Jam Session' has evolved into a compilation where architecture and sculpture collide. 06.01.2022 Victorian sculptor and printmaker Geoffrey Ricardo incites humour in his art by using a menagerie of actors, often in animal costumes, to play with and comment on the absurdities and vanities of life. Ricardo’s characters come from distant naïve memories, childhood misunderstandings and simplifications, slowly recollected for their graphic sense of parody. He inverts, reverses and stylises these memories into dreamlike puns on reality where recognisable stereotypes and arc...hetypes, such as the kangaroo from the Australian Coat of Arms, engage in grand comic melodramas. 'Anno Domino' is a life-sized Rhinoceros constructed from malleable sheets of copper that share an uncanny likeness to the leathery skin of a Rhino. Many of Ricardo’s sculptures represent the bodies of animals often depicted as costumes inhabited by humans. However, in this work the magnificent Rhino is depicted as itself, the only sign of human intervention or presence is through the blanket placed upon its back. Ricardo has used the image of Anno Domino since the mid-1990s in both his sculpture and etchings. The earlier etchings often featured dotted patterning across the Rhino’s body suggesting, as the title alludes to, the tiles of a ‘Domino’ game, which act as a metaphor for the pressure placed by humans upon the Rhino’s existence, its hierarchy in the animal kingdom and its survival.
