24.01.2022 Little bleak outside but we have heaters on and the Colours of Spring exhibition is warming our hearts #aboriginalart #indigenousart #partnershipwiththmccullochandmcculloch

22.01.2022 IN THE GALLERY//Judith Nungarrayi Martin of @warlu_art Born in 1976, Martin is from Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community 290 km north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia. She comes from a family of artists: her grandfather was the well-known artist, the late Shorty Jangala Robertson. Martin has been painting with the Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, a not-for-profit organisation that is 100% Aboriginal-owned by its artists located in... Yuendumu, since 1994. Warlukurlangu's main business is to promote the maintenance of local Indigenous culture by producing beautiful Aboriginal Art which is then sold around Australia and the world! Judith paints her father’s Jukurrpa (Dreamings), that include Janganpa Jukurrpa (Brush-Tail Possum Dreaming) and Yankirri Jukurrpa (Emu Dreaming). These Dreamings have been passed down through the generations for millennia and relate directly to the land, its features and the animals and plants that inhabit it. She has exhibited in group exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney and Japan. She uses an unrestricted palette to develop a modern interpretation of her traditional culture. These beautiful, subtle works depict this Janganpa Jukurrpa (common brush-tail possum [Trichosurus vulpecula]) Dreaming, which travels all over Warlpiri country. ‘Janganpa’ are nocturnal animals that often nest in the hollows of white gum trees (‘wapunungka’). This story comes from a big hill called Mawurrji, west of Yuendumu and north of Pikilyi(Vaughan Springs). Warlpiri people perform a young men’s initiation ceremony, which involves the Janganpa Jukurrpa. The Janganpa Jukurrpa belongs to Jakamarra/Jupurrurla men and Nakamarra/Napurrurla women. 14.01.2022 IN THE GALLERY// Julie Yatjitja (Iwantja Arts) Julie’s paintings shimmer with exuberant energy. She captures the intensity and power of country where the Iwantja Tjukitji (Iwantja Soakage) is located, and which holds the story of the Tjurki (native owl). Julie was born in the cool waters of the Iwantja creek, next to the large Tjukitji. The area is shaded by large gum trees, and the banks of the creek nestle close to large boulders. As a child she and her family lived here i...n a hand-built wiltja (shelter). Yankunytjatjara families played in the creek waters and drank from the soakage. The water gave vitality and life to the area, and provided a cool place for the families to live during the hot summers. This special Tjukitji is where the Indulkana community rst began. This place also holds the tjukurpa of the Tjurki who travelled across the desert and came to live in a large gum tree by the creek, to watch over the Anangu and keep them safe. Based in Indulkana, SA, Iwantja Arts is a not for profit, Aboriginal owned and run corporation managed by a board of directors. Through strong governance, the art centre encourages and fosters artistic excellence and cultural development within the community by providing opportunities, training, and career development for artists. 05.01.2022 ReGeneration artist: Maureen Poulson Napangarti of Papunya Tjupi Artists @tjupiarts. Maureen Napangarti Poulson has inherited the designs associated with the famous Kapi Tjukurrpa : Water Dreaming site at Kalipinypa from her mother Pilyari Napurrula, a sister of the highly significant Papunya School artist, the late Johnny Warangkula Tjupurrula. Poulson's mother shared with Warangkula country around Ilpilli, Kalipinypa and Tjikari, which Maureen and her siblings also share. ... The designs of Kalipynpa, located northwest of Kintore, tells the tjukurrpa of an important rain making ceremony to invoke the elements. It is a powerful storm bringing on the lightning, thunderclouds and rain sending its deluge to rejuvenate the earth, filling rock holes, clay pans and creeks. It has the power to create new life and growth upon the land. Images: Maureen Poulson Napangarti, Kapi Tjukurrpa - Kalipinypa, acrylic on linen, 122 x 91 cm.
