22.01.2022 If you've ever been part of a small crowd that initiates a #Mexicanwave in a packed #stadium or even witnessed first-hand panic buying unfold at a grocery store (à la 2020 classic hits), you'll know there's something phenomenal and surprising about crowd behaviour. . A crowd can spontaneously do random things. For example, it could roll over a burning vehicle to rescue complete strangers trapped inside, or on the other hand, rollover a police car and torch it in anger becaus...e their sporting team lost the grand final. . I'm a nerd for observing this sort of stuff unfold through my work. Sure hosting #events is not the same as inciting unhinged panic buying in aisle 4, but the mechanics are almost the same. . Sociologists will allege there's a theory behind what makes a crowd tip into collective behaviour. . They call it critical mass, it's the tipping point that will inevitably set off a chain reaction. . Ok, slow down, Einstein. How does this apply to being an MC? . Is there a specific number of people required to collectively do something for the majority of a crowd to be influenced to join in without question? Short answer. Yes. . On some level, a professional MC should recognise this without being a nuclear physicist. . How many people do we first need to get onto a dance floor before the majority of the room feels obliged to join in? 20%? 50%? . What percentage of the room do we need to connect with to make the entire room want to be a member of this crowd and participate in what the group is doing, like, cheering or clapping or being engaged and listening? Action is contagious. . When we're getting paid to do something that other people believe a non-professional can do for free, with certainty, we bring our enthusiasm and fun personality, but we also bring our smarts and expertise. 19.01.2022 Ok, so this may sound simple, but on the #weddingday, it's not a bad idea to chillax for a few beats at halftime before it's #showtime again. Before you kick down the doors at your #weddingreception, there's a good chance your day will feel like a big rush from the get-go. The best place to enjoy a bit of respite for you and your crew is in the bridal suite. Allow yourself enough time to appreciate the day so far. You can get hydrated, go to the restroom, adjust the dress, put bandaids on heels, all that stuff. You're going to need to refuel and rearm for phase 2.

09.01.2022 When I first spoke with Stacey & Jaden in October 2019. their expected guest numbers sat at around 325 guests. When 2020 came around, you can only imagine how tricky it must have been to decide on postponing or sticking to their original date. They were looking for someone light-hearted and entertaining to MC their wedding. At a recent #wedding at @thegrounds, @henrykphoto and crew from @imagehausweddings were catching a short respite from dodging rain clouds and jumping to shoot locations before phase two; the reception. I had my camera; they had theirsMexican standoff. We exchanged shots in a duel, I shot first, but Henryk coolly lifted his camera with one hand, snaps off a bullseye in return and then casually leans back in his seat. I think he won. They may have tattoos from head to toe or wear clothes that identify them of a particular faith. . Why do we do it? Perhaps it's a fleeting safety mechanism that kicks in or a habit. ... . Maybe it's because of the conditioning we got from our family or culture. . I don't want to give you any grand illusions that I am an ace of winning the hearts and minds of everyone I meet. But it sure is rewarding when you build a bond with someone you least expected. . After our initial phone call, I knew from their fun and vibrant vibes that this wedding was shaping up to be a high energy dance party with three meals. I want you to imagine a Croatian and Greek family gathering on the roids. ... . Their initial choice of venue was The University of Sydney - Great Hall with the grand high ceilings, but the old-style taste and charm of Linseed House at Grounds of Alexandria won them over. . They've been to multiple weddings themselves, at one point attending a wedding a month - the national average number for Croatians and Greeks! . They knew what to expect from their MC. They wanted me to do my standard stuff like run the night and be fun. They didn't need the MC to be a comedian or an actor, just real. I find most couples would share the same sentiment. See more
