25.01.2022 With Winter Sport in full swing, so are sports injuries. If you are experiencing any of the following, call us now on 3221 9696. High impact sports that involve using your feet can lead to injuries that will require specialist treatment. Overuse syndromes are common occurrences in sport and include injuries sustained from repeated action such as long distance running, as opposed to acute injuries which occur in an instant such as a sprained ankle. Your individual biomechanic...s will have an effect on the likelihood of certain injuries. Prevalent sports injuries include shin splints, runner knee, Achilles tendonitis and stress fractures. Sports people may also complain of thickened nails that can sometimes become ingrown or get bruises under the nail from repetitive trauma. Treatment for sports podiatric injuries involves a biomechanical assessment to look at your posture, strength, flexibility and movement, and an analysis of how the movement of your feet affects your lower limbs. Evaluation of sports shoes, stretches, strengthening exercises, application of various physical therapies and the fitting of orthotics are methods your podiatrist may use to address your particular injury. 23.01.2022 Need Orthotics? Call 3221 9696 and we can help you! Foot orthotics are shoe inserts designed to support, align or improve the function of the foot. Orthotics are recommended for people of all ages with a variety of foot and lower leg problems, such as Heel Pain, Plantar Fasciitis, or Fallen Arches, to name a few. They provide long term solutions in the treatment and prevention of corns, callouses and ulceration by redistributing the pressure of the bodys weight on the feet. They can also help rehabilitation of chronic conditions such a tendonitis, recurrent ankle sprains and stress fractures by providing consistent postural support. We offer a comprehensive assessment, taking into account your own biomechanics, footwear, occupational and lifestyle factors to determine whether Orthotics are suitable for you.

18.01.2022 April is our Neurological and Vascular Health Month. Have you ever wondered what your vascular health is like? So why not book in with either Tia or Skye today.

17.01.2022 Does it feel like you cant feel your feet? Peripheral neuropathy is a disorder that occurs when nerves malfunction because theyre damaged or destroyed. This disrupts the nerves normal functioning. They might send signals of pain when theres nothing causing pain, or they might not send a pain signal even if something is harming you. There are a number of conditions that can cause Peripheral Neuropathy, the number one being Diabetes. Other diseases that can lead to Periphe...ral Neuropathy include, but are not limited to: Vitamin deficiencies (e.g.B12 or folate), Medications (e.g. chemotherapy or HIV) Neurotoxins (e.g. solvents or insecticides), Cancers, Alcohol abuse, chronic kidney disease, Injuries, and Idiopathic (unknown cause). Symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy include: Tingling in the hands or feet Feeling like youre wearing a tight glove or sock Sharp, stabbing pains Numbness in the hands or feet Weak, heavy feeling in the arms and legs, Regularly dropping things from your hands Buzzing or shocking sensation Thinning of the skin It is very important to find out if you have developed Peripheral Neuropathy, as most people who have the condition do not even know they have it. The main complication of Peripheral Neuropathy is Ulcers. Due to the loss of sensation in the feet, you may not realise that you have an open wound. If left untreated the wound becomes infected and difficult to heal. If the ulcer gets bad enough then amputation may be required. It is not unheard of to have Peripheral Neuropathy extend past the knee, meaning you may not be able to feel anything from the knee down. This can affect walking, and driving due to no sensory feedback being provided. While there is no direct treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy it can be managed. It is important to find the cause of the condition. In some instances if the cause is removed then the damage can be halted. So if you are in doubt about why not come on in and see Tia or Skye, and see how your nerves are going?

12.01.2022 PAINFUL CORNS AND CALLOUSES? CALL 3221 9696 Walking or standing places pressure on the foot, and sometimes extra friction falls on a particular area of the foot. When this happens, the body may respond to the pressure by producing thickened areas of skin. These hard patches of skin are called calluses and are part of the bodys defence system to protect the underlying tissue. If the cause of the pressure is not relieved calluses can become painful. If the pressure becomes c...oncentrated in a small area, a hard corn may develop. Sometimes the pressure of the corn or callus may produce inflammation which can result in acute pain, swelling and redness. Sometimes soft corns may form between the toes where skin is moist from sweat or inadequate drying. These appear white and rubbery, they can also be caused by excessive friction. Corns and calluses are most often found on the balls of the feet or the top of toes. They can also be found on heels and even along the sides of your toenail. Calluses and corns are generally symptoms of underlying problems and in some cases, early warning signals of more complex foot disorders. Because they are caused by continuous pressure in one particular area, they may indicate abnormalities or deformities in your bone structure, or the way you walk. Often calluses and corns are caused by ill-fitting or inappropriate foot wear! Your podiatrist will not only recommend ways to relieve pain and get rid of the corn or callus, but can also help with isolating the cause and preventing reoccurring problems. See more

11.01.2022 Vascular Assessment Why get it done? Vascular assessments are used to identify Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) in the lower limb. PAD is the reduced circulation of blood to a body part other than the brain or heart. It is caused by a narrowed or blocked blood vessel. The main cause is atherosclerosis, which is the build-up of fatty deposits that narrow a blood vessel, usually an artery. Smoking, diabetes, obesity, circulation problems, underlying medical disorders and in...creasing age may contribute to a person developing PAD. Signs of reduced blood flow to the legs and feet can vary depending on your general health, medication and activity levels. Commonly people complain of thin or frail skin, cold feet, cramping in the calf or thighs whilst walking, wounds or ulcers which fail to heal, muscle wasting in the foot and rest pain. However sometimes PAD can be asymptomatic, meaning some people will not have the typical cramp like leg pain that disappears after resting for less than 10 minutes. Non-invasive tests can be performed within half hour, which can identify the signs of PAD in the lower limb. These include the use of a hand held Doppler which is able to identify your arterial health, we also use a PPG which measures blood pressures in your toes, this is especially important when there is a history of leg or foot ulcers. All results are sent to your regular GP and kept on file and used as a base line for future assessments. Call 3221 9696 to make an appointment today!

09.01.2022 If you need advice about choosing the Right Shoes for Sport, give us a call on 3221 9696! Your podiatrist can help advise you about the correct shoe for your preferred sporting activity and foot type. In general you should aim for sturdy heel support, good arch and appropriate cushioning. Shoes must have sufficient room at the toe, we recommend a minimum of 2cm and not compress the sides of the feet in a way that causes friction and potentially lead to sores or corns. Identif...y the primary activity that will be performed in the shoes and select accordingly - different kinds of exercise require different kinds of shoes. Traditional running shoes are designed to absorb forces, which can be between 3 and 4 times your body weight. Lightweight mesh materials can ensure that the upper parts of the shoe are breathable and doesnt stretch or distort with exercise. Some runners are now choosing low profile or barefoot running shoes, however these do not offer the same support or cushioning as a traditional sports shoe. If you are choosing this type of running shoe, you may need to adjust your running technique to avoid injury. Athletic shoes should be immediately comfortable and not require breaking in. An average athletic shoe should last 1000kms, although this will be influenced by your body weight and the surface you run on. Youll need to replace your shoe when it becomes distorted from constant wear or the mid sole has become compressed and is not able to absorb the forces of impact. See more

06.01.2022 Need help finding the right shoe? Call 3221 9696 and let us help. There is no such thing as the one perfect shoe. Feet come in all shapes and sizes, and undertake a range of different activities. Generally though, when you buy new shoes, its important to make sure that they fit properly, they are supportive for the kind of activity you will be wearing them for, and they do not cause damage to your feet or hurt you in anyway. When buying new shoes, keep in mind the following-... The heel of the shoe is less than 2.5cm high, high heels increase the pressure on the ball of the foot. Your shoes have a well-padded sole, a cushioned sole absorbs shock and reduces pressure on the feet. Your shoes are made from a material that breathes, fungal infections such as tinea love a warm, moist environment, and absorptive socks can help draw moisture away. Your shoes protect you from injury, your feet must be protected from your immediate environment. People with reduced sensation or circulation need to be especially careful they do not injure their feet. Pointy shoes can make your toes "claw". This may affect overall body posture. Clenched toes can also cause rubbing, leading to corns and calluses. Broad toe shoes allow the toes more room and can help prevent pressure injuries. Some extra tips: Your toes should not touch the end of your shoes or you may damage your nails and toes - you need a gap of about 1cm from the end of your longest toe. Shoes should be broad enough and deep enough for your foot, if you can see an outline of your foot pressing against your shoe that is probably the wrong fit. Dont buy shoes that need breaking in, shoes should be comfortable immediately. Shop for shoes later in the day, most peoples feet tend to swell during the day and its best to fit shoes when they are at their largest. See more
