04.01.2022 Prickly Pear (Opotunia stricta) This weeks nasty plant is still listed as an invasive weed by the Dept of Primary Industries and Agriculture. I remember as ...a child seeing this cactus in paddocks and farmland land across victoria. Previously it had taken over wide swathes of Australia until the Cactoblastis moth was introduced in the fight to eradicate it This cactus has long been a favourite in many Italian or Mediterranean gardens as its fruit was and still is consumed. However its delicious fruit carrying up to 250 seeds each is part of its spread. Consumed by birds and deposited in their droppings. Also to blame are gardeners who chop this 6 ft cactus down and irresponsibly dispose of the cuttings, resulting in the growth of a new plant from every flat prickly leaf. I had not seen this plant in 30 years until relocating to the Mid North District of South Australia . Its grown still in gardens and on properties in the district. With its popularity or ignorance of growers has seen it begin to take hold again, it can be seen along road sides near Port Pirie and surrounds. If unmanaged it may again take root and spread like it once did in the last century. Owners of this cactus need to be responsible and aware of it’s propensity to take hold in a relatively short amount of time, whilst we still have the Cactoblastis moth present it will costly to remove this plant if it takes hold again.
