24.01.2022 Make Australia the Clever Country Presently Australia is ranked 25th in the world in mathematics; behind first ranked country Singapore, and also behind New Zealand 21st, Vietnam, 22nd, but well behind Canada 10th,, Netherlands 11th, Denmark 12th and Finland 13th. The UK was 29th and the USA 40th I can improve the standards of mathematics of school students in Penrith. I would like to discuss two students that I have coached. Sophie I have mentioned before, she is being home... schooled and I am her mathematics mentor. When she started at Master Coaching (April, 2018), she was in year 8 at a local high school. She had not learnt at school the basis year 7 topics, directed numbers, algebra and equations. She is now in year 10, but completed the year 10 course last year, and is now well ahead of year 11 extension 1 students. The other students, A, started Master Coaching in August, 2018, when he was in year 7. A could not answer any question on a State normalised test devised by Macquarie University. This year he has been promoted to the top advanced mathematics class in his school. Our philosophy is that every student really loves to learn, and every student has unlimited powers to achieve. 11.01.2022 Times are re changing; you can either embrace change or you will be run over by the consequences. A dramatic example is the number of countries that discounted Covid-19 and are now suffering the horrific death tolls of the pandemic, including US, UK Brazil & Russia. Other countries have survived. Special teaching videos are available (on the MC Website or Google classroom) for students to download and replay as often as needed. 02.01.2022 Education and learning are hot button issues at the moment considering Australias declining standards in this pursuit. I have written an article on "How Children Learn" on our website. Today I would like to consider the influence of the home in the learning process. Please read and consider the following article. If you are a teacher I wish you well, as a parent I wish you luck. Learning the Home Influence The preparation for learning starts in the home. Eminent Educationali...st Dr. J. Patterson believes that: that all learners are born with some unique gift and talent and, therefore, tend to focus their efforts on liberating and transforming the at-promise nature of all human beings. Fortunately, I am joined by all of those associated with the International Gifted Education Teacher-Development Network (IGET-Network) in this belief. The question remains on how to prepare children for learning and to unleash this talent. We know that if a child spends the bulk of their day in a sedentary position requiring very little movement then that child will become psychically weak, un-coordinated, and many of their internal organs will also be poor health. Fortunately, this condition can be rectified by exercise. Further, if a young child is infused with the belief that he/she can be great as an athlete, if he/she trains with grit and determination that is in accordance with that belief, then that person will develop into an elite athlete. The logic of this would be almost universally apparent and would not offend anyones belief systems. The same applies to the brain. Neglected, or pampered by indulging it with continuous activities that require little or no mental stimulation (such as watching TV, some computer games, inane time spent on social media etc), then the power of the brain to function at a high intellectual creative level, wanes. The remedy to this neglect involves changing the childs belief mechanism to one where they recognize that they have the potential to be a genius, and giving them the right exercises and encouragement to feed that belief. There are some people who embrace the idea that a person is born with an IQ that will limited their ability to achieve on an intellectual level) and others, who like myself, accept the principle that a persons intellectual capacity can change with correct stimulation and a self-belief structure. Both sides of this thesis are well supported but latest research tends to favour the concept of nurturing over IQ. All children are born with an innate ability to learn, today this ability is more important than ever. Schools are learning institution, but with the rapid changes in technology learning is now a lifetime activity and the ability to learn is often determined by the early preparation in the home. Who, 200 years ago, would have thought that the fact that because mathematicians had invented imaginary numbers (-1) physicists could develop a whole new form of transportable energy, alternating current electricity? This branch of mathematics was thought of as being interesting but useless. Nothing could be further from the truth.
