23.01.2022 Dear MDAA members and consumers MDAA, like many disability organisations, is facing cuts to funding because the NSW Government is not committed to continue supporting us. They have given us all until 30 December 2020 from which funding will cease. Without this funding some advocacy organisations will be forced to close. MDAA has worked with people with disability from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds through our free advocacy programs, projects and se...rvices for over 20 years now. MDAA has been supporting the ethnic and disability community and we are dedicated to raise the voice of CALD people and their interests. We are asking for your help by participating in this survey to show your support for our campaign. You can help us to change this decision by the NSW Government. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NSW-disability-advocacy_13 The clock is ticking for us, so let us unite and stand together! Help MDAA continue supporting people in our community and stay open well into the future! Thank you for your support.

19.01.2022 MDAA Newcastle has received some positive feedback from a consumer and his newly connected support coordinator (CSO). The consumer was referred to MDAA Newcastle from head office to assist him with NDIS access. This has been achieved with help from his MDAA CBSO to gather relevant evidence and liaise with consumer, NDIS and health professionals. The CBSO also attended (via phone link) a plan gather meeting. This has led to a 3 year NDIS plan. MDAA consumer has been connecte...d to a CSO from his own CALD background - and supports are already in place They have also been assisted with rehousing by CBSO, this has also been achieved. Another good news story from MDAA .

From the article: Representatives from a NSW advocacy group were in Griffith last week, educating multicultural residents with disabilities on the wide array of services available to them. The Multicultural Disability Advocacy Association (MDAA) held a presentation at the Griffith Community Centre, speaking to a range of Griffith residents about how they can help them navigate the hurdles of living life with a disability.... The MDAA's Sera Yilmaz said the visit was about letting people know what their rights are. "We wanted to come down here to Griffith to speak to some of the consumers and let them know about the services we provide at the MDAA," Ms Yilmaz said.

07.01.2022 ADVOCACY IN ACTION!!! MDAA Wollongong were surprised by a beautiful array of Baklavas last week from a very happy consumer who has received regular services from the beginning of 2019. Over the year, some of the issues the family have received assistance with is in a Transfer of Housing, the lodgement of Australian Citizenship Applications, support to receive a larger NDIS package at the NDIS Plan Review Meeting, lodging a fine review with the RMS with a successful outcome o...f the fines dismissal and assisting the family in receiving an array of services and supports from the local NGO services in the area. For all these, the family had shown their appreciation for the advocacy support! MDAA is asking for your help by participating in a survey to show your support for our campaign for funding. You can help us to change this decision by the NSW Government. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NSW-disability-advocacy_13 The clock is ticking for us, so let us unite and stand together! 05.01.2022 A consumer was recently successful with the support of MDAA SES office to appeal a decision made by NCAT. The case involves a consumer’s claim against a Real Estate Agent(REA) for full refund of Tenancy Bond and for damages caused to personal contents (clothing) due to an impact of a water leakage and poor plumbing works in the rented unit. Initially, the REA made an offer to the consumer for a full refund of the Bond provided the case will not escalate to the Tribunal. The ...consumer was persistent and adamant to proceed with the claim. The first Tribunal Hearing outcome was in favour of the REA, awarding the consumer with only part of Bond money and the rest to the other party to cover for cleaning products that they bought and used to clean the place after the consumer and family relocated. The claim for the damage to clothing was dismissed by the Tribunal. The MDAA SES team supported the consumer in challenging the decision by NCAT by ensuring there were relevant evidences, such as records (receipts and date) of purchases, pictures of items (some if not all), preparing the affidavit and completing of the NCAT Appeal Form. With the language barrier an interpreter was used in most of the interactions. The application for appeal was lodged. A decision was made on 26 August 20 for the appeal to be upheld and for the claim in relation to the damaged clothing be reheard. The claim for full Bond money may vary depending on the success of the claim to clothing. This case was reported in www.caselaw.nsw.gov.au on 26 August 2020. This story highlights that no matter how small or big an issue is, every consumer has a right to an equitable resolve. The portion of the Bond money that is the subject of this case is a mere $150. The claim for the damage to the clothing is a lot more. See more
