12.01.2022 HUMANS OF MSPGH Meet Thomas, an inspirational Indigenous MD/MPH student My name is Thomas Mylne and I’m a proud Gangalu man from Central Queensland. I am... currently completing my MPH year of my MD/MPH and am heading off to Darwin in the New Year to conduct research for my final year of medicine with an Indigenous Health focus. From October 2019 to October 2020 I had the privilege of being a Board Director for Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association. During this time I met amazingly intelligent, capable and inspiring fellow students who I am confident will be future leaders for our mob. One of the biggest things I have taken away from these interactions though is that we need more of these people, we need more Indigenous doctors who are going to holistically improve the Australian health system and remind this country of the incredible talent and resilience of our First Nations people. In figures released by Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand (MDANZ) on 2019 medical graduation rates, there had been a 61% increase in a 5 year period in the number of Indigenous students across Australian and New Zealand. This is a remarkable achievement by our talented students/now doctors. However taking another angle on these figures, the 46 Indigenous graduates from 2019 made up 1.26% of the total 3655 graduates, well below population parity. In 2020 Indigenous enrolments were 3.8% of all enrolments which is a positive improvement and total numbers of Indigenous medical student across the country was up to 2.7%. These figures provide hope, however to reach parity in our medical workforce within the next 10-20 years we need to only maintain parity in our medical schools but exceed this, and ensure all these students are supported through to graduation. I am passionate to see governing bodies and the leaders in education reflect on the legacy they want to leave behind and consider whether their current affirmative action is aggressive enough. I pay my respects to all the inspiring Indigenous doctors in who’s footsteps I follow and will be forever grateful for the mentorship and guidance I have been provided on my medical education journey. I can only hope to return this good deed to the same extent in my future practice. #humansofmspgh #unimelb #mpghss #unilife DM us to be featured next

10.01.2022 Australian schools are safe to open, but states should adopt mitigation measures including rules for: When to add masks. When to reduce attendance or close schools.... The reason why other countries have chosen to close schools is as a last resort in national lockdowns in the face of high rates of community transmission and case numbers. https://theconversation.com/coronavirus-is-it-safe-for-kids

03.01.2022 Neo-Bionica facility to open in July. Our precinct continues to grow as a global biomedical powerhouse. Professor Mark Cook, Chair of Medicine and Director of Neurology at St Vincent’s Hospital where Neo-Bionica is located said the launch of the new facility will enable clinicians, scientists, engineers and industry partners to collaborate closely in the quest to find solutions for people with hard-to-treat diseases, like epilepsy. The ability to walk from my consulting rooms to the Neo-Bionica facility and talk to the engineers developing prototypes for my patients to test will have a huge impact on the speed of developing new treatments, and the future of medicine in Australia, Professor Cook said.

03.01.2022 Prof. Tony Blakely from our School of Population and Global Health , who was part of the team that created the model which helped Victoria eliminate COVID-19 community transmission, has joined colleagues from University of Otago to write this piece for the BMJ promoting the benefits of an elimination strategy.
