24.01.2022 IT'S WORLD SPINE DAY TODAY !!! Get Your Back in Action this World Spine Day As part of World Spine Day 2017 (16 October), chiropractors are raising awareness about the serious impact of spinal disability and aiming to empower people to take charge of their spinal health... Every year on 16 October, people from around the world come together on World Spine Day (WSD) to raise awareness about spinal disorders. WSD is an initiative of the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal. Health conceptualised to raise awareness about the serious impact of spinal disability and to empower people to take charge of their spinal health. This year the theme is Your Back in Action, emphasising the importance of healthy spinal posture and activity which promotes body awareness and minimises the day-to-day wear and tear on the spine. The Chiropractors Association of Australia (CAA) encourages people to take this opportunity to become proactive about their spinal health. Millions of people worldwide suffer from spinal disorders which include low back pain, scoliosis and disc disease, to name a few. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports that 1 in 6 Australians are suffering from back problems, and that these often lead to poorer quality of life, psychological distress and disability. Our sedentary lifestyle is a major contributing factor to obesity, spinal health issues and many other chronic diseases, said Dr Andrew Lawrence, CAA National President. By doing simple things such as improving your posture and keeping active, you can improve your spinal health and overall well-being, he added. As healthcare professionals who focus on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system, chiropractors are well-placed to offer preventative and lifestyle advice regarding chronic back pain. They aim to restore and maintain normal spinal function, collaborating with other healthcare professionals, where necessary. World Spine Day is a great opportunity to shine light on spinal disorders and encourage people to take steps to better health. Improving your posture and exercising regularly can help improve and maintain spinal health. CAA has developed the Straighten Up (Australia) app to help people improve their posture and enhance spinal health. Set reminders to receive notifications about sitting right, stretching, taking breaks, drinking water and improving your posture. The Straighten Up app also includes an exercise program designed to improve spinal health, stabilise core muscle groups and enhance health. World Spine Day is an initiative of the the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health and is proudly supported by the Chiropractors Association of Australia (CAA), the peak body representing chiropractors. 21.01.2022 The Truth is out, giving you a good dose of reality..... GOOD HEALTH DOESN'T COST....IT PAYS!

21.01.2022 LANDMARK STUDY SHOWS OPIOIDS NO GOOD FOR BACK PAIN ! Fairfax Media reported yesterday on new research which found that opioids are no better than ibuprofen or paracetamol at reducing lower back pain over a 12-month period, yet these opioids came with the threat of dependence and addiction, which has been blamed for an increase in accidental overdoses. The research involved a long-term trial by the Minneapolis Veterans Health Care System and studied 240 veterans taking opioid...s for chronic back and knee pain compared with those treated by non-opioids. Fairfax reports that the results have been presented at a major medical conference in the US, but have not yet been published. In November 2016, the Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA) released their white paper, A Better Approach to Pain Management in Canada. The CCAs white paper looks beyond the immediate critical challenges of substance abuse in Canada to review available evidence on measures to help reduce the pressure to prescribe opioids for back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions. The CCAs white paper asserts that the evidence is clear that manual therapies, mainly chiropractic, should be first-line options for the management of musculoskeletal conditions within the inter-professional healthcare team. Such management offers a safe, effective, non-invasive, coordinated, and cost-effective alternative to opioids.Google for more information about the Canadian Chiropractic Associations Chiropractic Response to Opioid Crisis. Announcing the national roll-out of real time prescription monitoring for prescription-only medicines in late July, the Minister for Health, Greg Hunt MP, noted that the misuse of prescription medicine is a growing trend in Australia. Since 1895, Chiropractors are the Original Back Doctors.

15.01.2022 The Drugs Dont Work, Say BACK PAIN Researchers ! Commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat back pain provide little benefit, but cause side effects, according to new research from The George Institute for Global Health. The findings of the systematic review, published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, reveal only one in six patients treated with the pills, also known as NSAIDs, achieve any significant reduction in pain.... The study is the latest work from The George Institute questioning the effectiveness of existing medicines for treating back pain. Earlier research has already demonstrated paracetamol is ineffective and opioids provide minimal benefit over placebo. Lead author Associate Professor Manuela Ferreira says the study highlights an urgent need to develop new therapies to treat back pain which affects 80 per cent of Australians during their lifetime. A/Prof Ferreira, Senior Research Fellow at The George Institute and at the Institute of Bone and Joint Research, said: Back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide and is commonly managed by prescribing medicines such as anti-inflammatories. But our results show anti-inflammatory drugs actually only provide very limited short term pain relief. They do reduce the level of pain, but only very slightly, and arguably not of any clinical significance. A/Prof Ferreira added: When you factor in the side effects which are very common, it becomes clear that these drugs are not the answer to providing pain relief to the many millions of Australians who suffer from this debilitating condition every year. Better still we need a stronger focus on preventing back pain in the first place. We know that education and exercise programs can substantially reduce the risk of developing low back pain. And fortunately there is the perfect solution to this common problem. Chiropractors (the Original Back Doctors) have been most effective in treating and preventing Back Pain since 1895 !

14.01.2022 MOBILE OBSESSION Turning Children into Hunchbacks ! Children as young ass six are developing hunched backs and ''text-neck'' syndrome from using mobile phones. I first brought this to the public's attention from my observations in my own practice on the 26th of November, 2014 (WARNING: Text-Neck on the Increase !). I warned then and finally experts now warn they are at risk of degenerative spinal disease, chronic headaches, osteoarthritis and reduced mobility as a result. ... A survey by the Chiropractors Association of Australia NSW shows chiropractors are seeing up to 20 patients a week suffering chronic neck pain, headaches, poor posture and repetitive strain injuries in the wrist and hands from texting. There has been a 47% per cent increase in neck problems in the past three years, and president of the CAA, Dr John de Voy said nearly half the patients treated were teenagers. ''Research shows people are being drawn to their phones more than 200 times a day to email, tweet, check Facebook and post on Instagram. It's an epidemic'' he says. Chiropractors are concerned that this prolonged ''technology posture'' on teenager's delicate neck structures and further down the spinal column. They are seeing postural issues that wouldn't normally creep into a person's spine until the late 20s, 30s, and 40s. This can be further aggravated by many teenagers' slumped sitting posture thereby involving and compromising the whole spine's strength, stability and nerve supply. The advice I give is a good way of reducing further neck damage is to lift the phone or tablet up higher so you are looking straight ahead and not downward constantly. Make it a habit of looking up regularly and side-to-side to release and relieve the muscle strain across the shoulders and neck. A chiropractic spinal checkup is advisable to check for any early damage to your child's neck structures.

12.01.2022 CHANGING PROBIOTIC PARADIGMS Probiotic Myths & Misconceptions Sensational headlines and ‘fake news’ are nothing new; but, recently probiotics came into the firing line. Headlines, such as ‘Probiotics labelled quite useless’ have hit internet sites and news broadcasts.... BUT the research which is based on a trial of 15 people, generalised findings from one generic non-researched multi-strain probiotic, ignored the fact that specific probiotic strains are for specific purposes, and did not assess any actual clinical outcomes. The International Scientific Association of Probiotics and Prebiotics has responded that ‘Without clinical evidence, it is not possible to conclude about the tested probiotic’s usefulness, and it is certainly not possible to conclude about probiotic usefulness in general.’ The landscape of probiotic research and understanding is changing rapidly, and we need to follow and keep up with the latest quality research and understand fully how we need to follow the real science, not the misinformation.

06.01.2022 I must say that after over 50 years of getting sick people well, it was my contributing to the healthy improvement in sickness and accidents by my pint-sized patients that I received the most joy and satisfaction. Seeing them grow up and in turn bringing their own children into my clinic to get their spinal checkups so they too can experience improved health and wellbeing is the most satisfying. I'm so fortunate to be part their ''Circle of Life''.
