13.01.2022 Five tips for writing a good conference abstract: 1. Leave time to write, revise and submit. Note the deadline carefully and plan to have a finished copy for circulation to authors at least a few days before. You never know when someone senior might ask you to re-do half the abstract. 2. Read the submission guidelines carefully note the word/character limit and stick to the formatting instructions. Some conferences will automatically disregard abstracts that don’t conform ...to the guidelines. 3. Check the reporting guidelines for your type of study from the EQUATOR network. The relevant guidelines (CONSORT for RCTs, STROBE for observational studies, PRISMA for systematic review) have guidelines specific for abstracts. 4. Think carefully about what contractions you can use to save word count. For example, 95% CI can be 95%CI or even just CI. 5. Avoid acronyms as much as possible, these can be confusing and make your abstract annoying to read. It’s a careful balance between maintaining your word count and making your abstract unnecessarily complicated. See more
