25.01.2022 We never give our mindsets enough credit. . . It's incredible how in crazy circumstances that people who have visualised healing have healed faster. This is also doesn't mean you're not trying if you aren't healing the way you thought. What is empowering for everyone is possibility- and how people who find meaning in their pain or illness can find joy in experiences that most couldn't bear. .... . This post is a message of hope. It is intended to be read and followed by "if i can't fix my situation, then maybe what meaning can I find in it to make the struggle worth it?" . . Finding meaning in recovery is essential, but also individual, and so it needs to be done in our own time. To those who are healing - take your time, and give yourself permission to struggle. To those who are being supportive - recognize that shifting to a positive way of thinking can take time and accepting that health has changed is a big deal, and that treating people the same as you did before the illness/injury is essential - while respecting their new health needs as growing and healing is hard work. If you don't want people to feel like their illness is their identity, then help by having conversations as if the illness isn't the only thing in their world while adapting social interaction to things they can do - sometimes it's hard to see that . . Somedays breaking down and feeling helpless is okay. Somedays we fight, and sometimes we start to see meaning again and have hope. . . That feeling of hope is exciting and worth fighting for Hope is cemented in meaning. So in days when you feel sick or in pain, what gives you meaning?

24.01.2022 Had a beautiful day at the Sandstone Point Seafood Festival eating yummy food while listening to live music by the ocean Health update: did have a minor paralysis attack but thankfully this time we were prepared with the wheelchair handy just in case so while it was uncomfortable, it didn't stop me having a great time overall Trying to make the most of my crazy health journey whenever I have the spoons & doing my best to manage whatever this new mystery illness is until... I get a proper diagnosis. Although I have a positive: Super grateful to say my energy recently seems to be improving thanks to a new blend of herbs I've been taking. Baby steps

24.01.2022 I really enjoyed the Clinical Naturopathic Dermatology conference by @mediherbaus last weekend Learned some really interesting skin health tips, for example: We need to be mindful of what products we use on our skin, as our skin wants an acidic pH of ideally <5. In a time where alkalinity products are trending, this is an important piece of information. Different parts of our body need different pHs to be at their best. This pH is where beneficial bacteria that are protecti...ve can thrive as one of the body's external lines of defense. In a time where we're constantly sanitizing, skincare is important to support your body to keep sufficient amounts of AMPs (antimicrobial peptides) in the layers of our skin - having too much or too little AMPs has been theorized to be an underlying cause in multiple skin conditions including atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and rosacea. So what can we do to help our skin? Well, products like coconut oil, argan oil and jojoba oil can help keep our skin at the ideal pH. Make sure when choosing products that these oils are genuine ingredients instead of just on the label as a scent, marketing can be sneaky sometimes! We want to optimize the external environment of our skin so our commensal bacteria can do what they do best in contributing to immune responses. Pretty cool how even microbes on our skin are part of our immune system hey? Might be time to try something new when buying soap next

23.01.2022 Not all omega 3 supplements are created equal. When choosing a supplement, check the DHA and EPA content, not just the overall omega-3. Studies have recommended at least 60% EPA to get the therapeutic benefits. Too much DHA in the ratio and EPA won't work effectively. So, it's best to get these essential fatty acids working together. If you're using fish oil for a specific health condition, you may need triple-strength capsules to suit your needs - ask a health professional.... Most people are deficient in these types of fatty acids. Dietary sources include fish and algae like spirulina. Together, EPA and DHA can support the body with a range of benefits including: - helping to lower blood pressure - lowering inflammation - supporting your HPA axis to help the body better cope with stress - has some benefits in treating depression and anxiety - may lower the risk of developing dementia (Alzheimer's disease) - support healthier sleep cycles Note: Avoid supplements if on blood thinners

23.01.2022 Spiritual connection is important in healing. Today I joined indigenous Australians all around the country in a global cleansing ceremony for helping heal our country from the devastation of the bushfires and sicknesses rampant in our land. Thanks to @livingcultureltd for creating this event and providing a way for people all over our nation to connect together. They livestreamed their smoke ceremony if you'd like to see a video. . . . Traditionally, smoke ceremonies are used... for healing and warding away bad spirits. Fresh gum leaves are used to create a big smoke & you let the smoke wash over you and set your intentions for good while paying respect - this can be in meditation or in prayer as the smoke washes over you. I kept my fire small as I'm in a city, and knelt as the smoke washed over me, and I felt this incredible feeling of peace. . . As a Mbarbarum and Yidinji woman I paid tribute to elders past, present and emerging, and acknowledged the Yugambeh people of the land where I currently live as part of the smoke ceremony [--] . . . Unity and positive energy is essential in bringing our country together during these hard times - spreading kindess and connectedness contributes to healing as we are all connected. I've been so impressed by how many different cultures and faiths have united together worldwide in setting their healing intentions during the pandemic - whether it has been a cultural belief, religious belief, or spiritual perspective etc it's been beautiful seeing people come together when restrictions have kept us apart physically . . . . . . #indigenouswomen #healing #smokeceremony #connection #australia #spirituality #unity #bushmedicine #indigenousmedicine #reconciliationweek #integratedmedicine #holistichealth #traditionalknowledge #healingtogether See more

22.01.2022 How to survive intensive practicals at university with hypermobility (HSD)? . . Thanks to my Occupational Therapist I now have a way to complete my myotherapy classes that will minimise wrist sublaxations. This brace allows me to form any handshapes needed, while also preventing wrist movement & stabilizing the joint. .... . . Also I will need to practice techniques like cupping and myofascial release over the next 2 months so let me know if you'd like to be considered for free treatments as I'm practicing. . . Just wondering when the super-human strength will kick in since this wrist brace looks like the beginning of a superhero get-up See more

20.01.2022 I'm pretty excited to finally make some time to watch the recordings from the @ehlers.danlos 2020 Virtual Conference that was held recently - unfortunately in my time zone I was sleeping when the event was live so very happy to get access to the recordings I'm literally 5 minutes in & it's already fascinating hearing from a doctor with a PhD in Human Genetics - so learning a bit about a bunch of connective tissue disorders - I had no idea there were so many! Did you?

19.01.2022 Fruit salad made fun Loved this blend of watermelon, rockmelon, kiwi fruit, strawberries, raspberries, pineapple & pomegranate . . . My friend and I decided to get creative in making food for an event Making a ship like this would also be a great activity in encouraging kids to eat healthier snacks ... . . . A variety of colours in food often means a variety of different healthy constituents so a diversity of colour in food is much more than pleasing to the eye . . . . . . #makefriendswithsalad #fruit #fruitsalad #yummyyummy #pirateships #funwithfood #nutrition #healthysnacks #foodforkids #eatwell #watermelon #naturopathy #getcreative #eattherainbow See more

19.01.2022 Did you know that looking at somebody's eye can tell you a lot of clues about their health? Iridology isn't an official diagnostic tool; however, it can be a good guide in case-taking and hint towards what parts of the body are struggling and need extra support. For example, can you see the blue rings toward the outside of this eye? These are called nerve rings, and often indicate that a client needs extra support to deal with stress and nervous tension, and some lifestyle adjustments to fit in time for self-care. Very common to see these in people who are feeling burned out, or may be spotted as an early sign that better stress coping techniques are needed to prevent burning out. Good things there's a tonne of nutritional, herbal, and lifestyle recommendations that can help

18.01.2022 While it's been quite intense undertaking 2 subjects' worth of practical intensives over the time that's usually holidays (thanks rona), man the human body is interesting! Every little landmark on the bones has a purpose for structure or movement and now I'm learning the muscles in more detail, the mechanics of how the body moves is coming together and it's pretty cool. . . E.g. have you ever taken a moment to consider just how amazing it is that we can balance our entire weight on our toes? It's such a small surface area yet it just works, I think that's pretty awesome.

18.01.2022 Days like today I'm especially grateful for integrated medicine. Surgery went well, and now I'm focusing on rest, and post-op nutrition. Including getting some sun as Vitamin D can help speed up post-op recovery. I'm quite drugged up in this photo Grateful it seems to have gone well

16.01.2022 Loaded mexican - the study food of champions. I'm proud today because I've been stressed prepping for exams and resisted binging a bunch of junk food and instead chose a healthier option where I still get the satisfaction of BBQ corn chips, but I'm also nourishing my body with veggies & grass-fed beef flavour - packed with antioxidant-rich herbs like cumin, paprika, coriander seed, and turmeric. I always find it funny because so often some of my friends feel guilty when the...y eat junk food around me as if being in the nutrition and natural health field means I'm always eating perfectly Just because I study nutrition doesn't mean I'm immune to cravings and bad days, we all deserve to celebrate our wins, some days are better than others So I'm keen to celebrate today as a win. What are some food wins you've had lately? Or if you feel you've fallen off the bandwagon, what's one small step to take today to feel better?

15.01.2022 Please read my entire post before reacting. I'm challenging the message the media is posting. Do not think for a second this means I don't care and these scenarios do not break my heart that these tragedies are still happening today <3 . . With the current situation about George Floyd, and also the very under-reported situation of David Dungay in Australia and many others, especially in 3rd-world countries white & black and in between who haven't made it into the media spotli...ght who are treated with injustice e.g. a white woman in Russia who was arrested and abused for challenging political norms, stop and think about what the media is trying to do. . . The media thrives on people getting angry. When people are angry, they respond with violence, they yell, they make noise. This brings more views, more outrage, more negative stories to report. But anger, produces a temporary outrage, and then is forgotten about in a matter of months. We deserve better. George Floyd's memory deserves better. David Dungay's memory deserves better. . . Has everybody noticed that nobody talks about the devastating impacts of the bush-fires that happened in Australia just months ago? Why is that? Because the media isn't telling you to be outraged anymore, but those people are still struggling - but without the outrage, the media doesn't get the same amount of views, so they no longer care. The media's latest posting should not be a guide for your everyday morality, nor should we need a media story to reach out to our fellow humans or be heartbroken at injustice. . . . Until the media stops emphasising people into categories, and promoting divisive language that encourages focusing on helping a people because they meet a statistic rather than because every human that is struggling deserves support, then its goal is to promote anger, not love. Love is where lasting change happens. Developing a greater love for people is where months from now, people will be viewed as humans worthy of equal opportunity and love, ALL the time. People deserve to be treated equally, purely because they are our fellow people. . . . (Continued in comments). See more

14.01.2022 It's time for people who've never had a chronic condition to stop acting as if the only reason people are sick is because they're not trying hard enough. Recovery with a chronic illness can mean multiple things: - Pacing yourself during the gradual journey to full recovery with a bunch of little steps - Keeping an open mind, but also valuing evidence over hype. Just because somebody doesn't think an essential oil is relevant to their condition, doesn't mean someone isn't tryi...ng. - Recognizing yoga doesn't help everyone - Recognize that different modalities have different approaches so one modality (e.g. naturopathy) may be able to help something that another like conventional medicine can't and vice versa - Accepting two people with the same condition may present differently - Pacing yourself to best manage a condition because some parts may be permanent and knowing that life is still beautiful and meaningful See more

12.01.2022 For anybody who is fighting an ongoing battle, whether that be in health, life stressors or even a concept as simple as self-acceptance and self-love, bravery is choosing to keep trying even though we don't know when the struggle is going to end or when things are going to be better. There's a pretty big chance you're doing better than you think

11.01.2022 All out of spoons today... for the 1st time this year I've caught a cold and it has wiped me out. Although, I'm pretty happy that the lifestyle changes I've made to better support my body have really made a difference on my immune system and I haven't had a cold in a long time! It's normal to get a cold maybe 1-2 times in a year, but frequent colds and infections may indicate that our immune systems need support. . . . I'm part-way through exams now and I know this is my body...'s way of asking me to slow down. Plus, while I don't yet know the cause of my random episodes of what I've labelled 'muscle paralysis attacks', I've researched, self-tested and noticed a correlation between high sugar intakes and episode prevention, so while it's exciting to have an intervention as soon as I feel muscle weakness, going from completely refined sugar free to regular sugary drinks to prevent episodes cannot have been great for my body - unfortunately, it's the best I've got until I get a diagnosis and have any idea of what biochemical pathways need help as everything my collective health team has thought of has come back as 'normal'. #undiagnosed . . . . When you already have a chronic condition like HSD, you have to schedule bad days to stay on track with study when pain flares can happen at random - so I'm glad I've kept on track when I had good days so I can rest now. Going to take another few days to really focus on resting and recovering and pumping my body full of good nutrition and immune-modulating herbs so I can get back to smashing it at uni & rehab sooner . . . It's tempting to drug myself up and push through but I know that it'll drag out recovery and I'll end up feeling worse, maybe even ending up completely bedridden without any choice. Plus, now's really not the time to push it and leave myself vulnerable to secondary infections. . . . So I may be a little quiet this week, focusing on self-care, hope you're all remembering to find time to look after yourselves and eat plenty of veggies, especially now we're in Winter Stay safe See more

10.01.2022 Here's a super easy nutritious meal if you're looking for inspiration: . . . 1/4 plate of grass-fed meat, 1/2 plate blend of roast veggies like potato, beetroot & pumpkin cooked in a light spray of olive oil and herbs, 1/4 plate of salad of leafy greens, tomato & avocado - SO yummy, SO filling and full of colour ... . . . 07.01.2022 Early morning sunrise and taiji & qi gong class - a beautiful start to the day of morning meditation with @wujimedicine

04.01.2022 Brekky by the water today Prep time: 5 minutes, just mango, rockmelon & kiwifruit with coconut yoghurt. Aldi has a really affordable coconut yoghurt that's really filling because it has a much higher coconut content than most at the supermarket - you only need 1-2 spoonfuls because healthy fats are filling

03.01.2022 Build muscle to burn fat. . . Swipe for an article. .... . Weight management is not about the number on the scale, it's about feeling your best in your body. It's not about comparison. It's about feeling strong. It's about disciplining your body to be at its healthiest and most empowered state, whatever that may be for you. It's about balance - working on muscle groups equally to prevent injuries and lower your risk of chronic disease. It's about enhancing quality of life, especially if you already have a chronic condition, and it must be in whatever size steps and whatever timeline is right for you as an individual. . . . Exercise and nutrition go together, they compliment each other. When you nourish your body so that your muscles can work optimally, then exercise is more effective, and things like recovery time and healing are enhanced. . . . Strength training doesn't have to be going to the gym or getting buff. It could start like I did 3 years ago with nothing but a mild resistance band doing gentle reps while lying on the couch because I was that weak. Today I was doing squats with 4kg weights - progress is only compared to you, there is no room for ego in recovery and rehabilitation. Meet your body where it's at - anything no matter how small is better than doing nothing, and you decide how much you can handle, just don't give up on your body. . . . It's pretty cool how much science is learning about the role of exercise in lowering insulin resistance, helping sugar enter cells the way it's meant to, and contributing to the prevention of Type 2 Diabetes. . . What type of exercises or rehab works best for you? See more

03.01.2022 Brekky protein smoothie So simple to make! Hemp protein, Watermelon, Blueberries, Icy coconut water, One date & a sprig of mint and blend Tastes like summer Less than 5 mins prep time

02.01.2022 Did you know that it's best to separate coffee and food consumption by at least 2 hours? . . In fact, studies have shown that coffee consumption up to one hour after food can reduce iron absorption by up to 39%. .... . When we consume is so important. I recently heard a story of a lady who would take her pills with coffee and wondered why they weren't working... well, caffeine is an alkaloid, and alkaloids bind with vitamins and minerals to reduce absorption. . . Regular coffee consumers even have a 72% higher risk of peptic ulcers developing due to an increased secretion of gastric acid and pepsin. Coffee alternatives include dandelion, wattle seed and maca powder. . . Caffeine has its perks; it's great for use as a stimulant to get moving in the morning, but if you're dependent on coffee to function throughout the day, or consuming more than 1-2 cups, it might be time to investigate why you're so tired - guarantee it won't be a caffeine deficiency causing fatigue - find the underlying cause. 02.01.2022 A healthy fish, chips & salad combo, yes it did taste as good as it looks . . Loving getting ocean-caught Aussie salmon - ocean-caught is the only way to get decent omega-3 content, otherwise you may as well just have a fish oil capsule instead. If you live anywhere near the ocean, you may be able to get awesome deals on seafood from small local businesses - much cheaper & better quality than in the big-brand stores .... . . This is the ratio of veggies that should be on a dinner plate - at least half! With bursts of healthy fats like those found in avocado and a mix of colours And make sure to pair it with a solid source of protein like ocean-caught fish . . . #makefriendswithsalad #fishandchips See more

02.01.2022 Often I get asked why the type of supplement matters, or why can't I just get the cheapest brand from the chemist? Well, it depends on your needs. The cheaper brands may be okay for a top-up if you've got perfect nutrition, but if there's a deficiency or if you've got a higher demand whether that be from exercise or illness or stress it likely won't be cutting it. Others will have polymorphisms which require better quality absorption from supplementation as the body has trou...ble absorbing certain nutrients e.g. MTHFR. Or on the other hand, supplementing too much of a specific nutrient may throw biochemical pathways out of balance. So there's a reason why self-prescribing, or just going with what your friend recommended may not give the best results. I used to work in a health food shop and the amount of times people would come in guessing 10+ times what to take and come back disappointed but would refuse to book an actual appointment was mindblowing! A professional will holistically look at the whole picture of your health and do quality research based on deeper understanding obtained from university study to save you the guess work & tailor any prescriptions specifically to you and your needs This diagram was made from a similar one in a 2014 journal article on magnesium supplements Have a look at the 2nd word on the supplement, e.g. magnesium orotate, ferrous sulfate, etc.

01.01.2022 Only researching what you feel is right and ignoring anything that challenges it is called a confirmation bias. Prioritizing bias hinders progress. Here's some good questions for self-reflection anytime you hear info about a new idea about health, especially health products: . . 1. Is this information written in a way that provokes me to feel fear or get mad? .... Take a step back. If you're feeling any sort of emotion when reading something, chances are it's been designed to scare you into action. Ask yourself, if this had no threat to myself or others, does the reasoning they've given actually make sense? . . . 2. Am I trained enough in this topic to be able to research it for myself? Does having my confirmation bias challenged really mean that I cannot trust this person? . . This is a big one. E.g. I've had many a chat with people with no pharmacology training who've gotten angry when a doctor told them their herbs may be unsafe with a drug. . Evaluate on a case-by-case basis. Safety is a priority. ASK your health professional - have you been trained on herbal interactions? Could you please explain the mechanism where it interacts? If they don't know, they may be playing it safe as natural doesn't always mean safe to take & so they're comfortable sticking to what they know. If you're unsure of something a Dr has told you about a herb & drug interaction, see a qualified naturopath as sometimes databases oversimplify & change context of herbs, & sometimes it's correct. Google, Blogs and documentaries do not provide sufficient detail & herbs are our specialty. . . 3. Does this promote a quick fix without lifestyle changes to heal? If I did lifestyle changes 1st, would the product make a difference? . Self-explanatory. . . 4. If there's journal evidence, is it a good quality paper? Am I trained to tell? . . Many MLM products claim journal-based research but the paper quality is CRAP & lifestyle changes can produce the same results much more affordably which is better for you. . Also, correlation doesn't always mean causation so more research may be needed. . Empower yourself to optimize your healthcare See more

01.01.2022 Unfortunately not everyone in the health and wellness industry has your best interest at heart. It's okay when you see a new product or treatment advertised to ask for the clinical research, not only for a year, but how it impacts people years after the treatments are given. So many 'wellness trends' for beauty end up being bad for your health, and are marketed in a way that makes you feel like you're not beautiful enough without it. If a page is telling you that who you are ...isn't good enough, it may be a good time to unfollow - never a bad time for an influence detox. Life's too short to have things that don't uplift you in your feed . . . Silicon breast implants are now in the spotlight for making many women really sick - many whose mystery illnesses vanish when the implants are removed! Did you know that the initial research was only for one year? Yet nothing tracked the impact long-term, and so tonnes of people felt like they were going crazy when they first started to speak up and would get dismissed. . . . 'Vagina facials and douches' are marketed as a pampering opportunity - but vaginas are not meant to smell like cookies Nor is sticking a bunch of antimicrobial herbs up there a good idea... the vagina has a microbiome too, and a very specific pH; disrupting that can lead to yeast infections and a lot of unpleasantness. Doesn't really sound worth it does it? . . . People were told changing their skin colour with cosmetic treatments was safe; people literally would change their skin from white to tanned or tanned to brown - later it was found this can cause cancer. It's heartbreaking to me that anybody would feel the need to change their skin colour instead of embracing who they were born to be. Health trends without evidence are not worth the risk. . . . . What is worth taking a risk - is embracing our natural beauty, and saying no to any agenda that seeks to profit off us not feeling good enough. . . . Health comes first Being unregrettably YOU is empowering. . . Don't let dodgy 'wellness experts' prey on your insecurities - You're enough just the way YOU are See more
