We are going to help you to EVALUATE the EFFECTIVENESS of your training (study) and OPTIMISE your GAMSAT Preparation. (These are life-long skills that you will then find useful in your medical degree!) Join us tomorrow to analyse whether YOU are using your GAMSAT study time EFFECTIVELY!

17.01.2022 What do you think about My Health Record? Read this article and write an argumentative essay with your view in response. https://theconversation.com/freezing-out-the-folks-default-

10.01.2022 Let’s analyse your most recent GAMSAT study session- Are you doing ACTIVE study or PASSIVE study? Do you just sit and read a page or chapter of your study manual/ textbook/ other source? Do you read a few lines and then make a note, read a few more lines and make another note? Do you find that you retain information very easily on the day you learn it, but struggle to retain the information for more than a day or two? These are all symptoms of PASSIVE study! Passive study pu...ts information into your SHORT TERM memory. Think of your brain as a muscle- it will only grow and strengthen if it strained and tested. ACTIVE study is like a work-out for your brain and is experiential, mindful and engaging. Tomorrow we’ll explore HOW to study ACTIVELY (and hence use your GAMSAT study time EFFECTIVELY).

02.01.2022 Train your brain by studying ACTIVELY- give your brain a workout! We challenge you to try this technique for your next GAMSAT study topic.and see for yourself how much better you not only retain but are able to APPLY what you learn (e.g. to GAMSAT questions!) Step 1: Read actively Read half a page of your learning source. As you are reading, stop and think about what each part MEANS- understand the information as opposed to just seeing it.... Step 2: Think some more! Put the information away so you can’t see it. Think about the important ideas you just learnt. Try and explain the concept to you study partner/ friend/ cat/ big toe. Step 3: Test yourself! Now make notes- not a reproduction of the original passage but the way you understand it. This might mean that you use dot points, a table or a diagram. Step 4: Evaluate Now look back at the original information and re-read it. Did you miss anything important? Add this to your notes. Now you are LEARNING what your brain DOESN’T KNOW. Step 5: The first revisit Revisit your new learning 2-3 days later. This doesn’t mean reading your notes (Passive study!). It means pushing your brain to recall what you learnt. Try to reproduce your notes/diagram or explain the concept again to your study partner/ friend/ cat/ big toe. Then look back at your original notes and see how you went. Do PRACTICE QUESTIONS. APPLY what you have learnt. Learn by doing. Step 6: Pre-exam revisit Revisit your learning again before the exam. TEST yourself! Think about the ideas. Jot down keywords. Do PRACTICE QUESTIONS. APPLY what you have learnt. Learn by doing. How did you go? Leave us a comment if you have tried these ACTIVE STUDY techniques. Did they help?
